Cynthia Erivo & Shoshana Bean Talk Their Holiday Show, "Night Divine"

On Monday, December 17, Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Cynthia Erivo and Billboard #1 recording artist Shoshana Bean star in a one-night-only Holiday Concert Event, "Night Divine," at Harlem's World Famous Apollo Theater. "Night Divine" is an evening of music inspired by classic holiday TV variety shows. This soulful musical celebration features new arrangements of holiday favorites, performed by a 15-piece orchestra, with songs. >> OH, MY GOSH. THAT SONG IS SO ICONIC. [ CHEERING ] [ APPLAUSE ]

>> SHOSHANA BEAN AND CYNTHIA ERIVO, WHAT A THRILL TO HAVE YOU HERE. IT WOULD BE AN EVENT TO HAVE EITHER ONE OF YOU HERE, BUT TOGETHER, I'M PINCHING MYSELF.

>> OH, THANK YOU.

>> THAT REMAINS THE SAME. YOU CLEARLY LIKE EACH OTHER A LITTLE BIT.

>> YEAH. WE LOVE EACH OTHER.

>> HOW DID YOU MEET?

>> HOW DID WE MEET?

>> WE MET, I'M GOING TO SAY 2014.

>> YEAH.

>> IN LONDON.

>> YEAH.

>> SCOTT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER AND WE DID A CONCERT.

>> HE'S A SONGWRITER.

>> IT WAS A BIG DEAL FOR HIM, AND HE SAID YOU HAVE TO MEET THIS WOMAN. YOU HAVE TO MEET THIS GIRL AND SHE'S PLAYING AT THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. SHE WANTS TO MEET YOU. WAIT UNTIL YOU HEAR HER SING.

>> I THINK WE MET QUICKLY AT REHEARSALS.

>> I RAN BACK TO THE SHOW AND THEN RAN BACK TO THE THEATER TO TRY AND GET IN, AND I REMEMBER THEY WERE ALL HELPING ME AND I'M IN MY DRESS, AND SHE HAD -- EVEN BACK THEN -- I WAS TRYING TO GET THIS DRESS, LIKE, WRINKLE-FREE, AND SOMETHING WASN'T WORKING. LIKE SOMEONE WAS --

>> I HAD NO PART, BECAUSE THE BOTTOM LINE IS WE HIT IT OFF RIGHT AWAY, AND WE WENT AND GOT NOODLES AND WE WENT TO TEA.

>> YEAH. YEAH. YEAH.

>> IT WAS A GOOD TIME. IT WAS COOL.

>> DID YOU SING TOGETHER THAT NIGHT? OR YOU EACH SANG SEPARATELY.

>> WE DID. WE HAD A LITTLE WITH NEVER NEVER LAND.

>> AND SOMEONE ELSE --

>> JUST THE THREE OF US?

>> SURE.

>> SO I WONDER IF THAT VIDEO EXISTS.

>> GREAT. AND THEN YOU'VE KEPT IN TOUCH THROUGH THE YEARS.

>> YES.

>> THE FIRST TIME THAT I WAS AWARE OF YOUR FRIENDSHIP WAS WHEN YOUR STUDIO VIDEO OF I DID SOMETHING BAD, THE TAYLOR SWIFT SONG CAME OUT AND IT WAS, LIKE, THESE WOMEN ARE EITHER GOING TO MURDER EVERYBODY OR ARE GOING TO, LIKE, TAKE OVER THE WORLD TOGETHER. MAYBE BOTH. I'VE NEVER SEEN -- I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING SO -- I MEAN, THE WORD FIERCE IS KIND OF LIKE OVERUSED, BUT THAT VIDEO WAS SO FIERCE!

>> THANKS. I FEEL LIKE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE TWO OF US GET TOGETHER BECAUSE I HAD -- I CALLED HER BECAUSE I HAD ISSUES COMING TO L.A. AND WE HAD A DATE ON THE BOOKS AND IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE A CUDDLE ON THE COUCH.

>> I HAVE AN IDEA AND YOU FEEL LIKE MAKING A VIDEO BECAUSE I THINK THIS COULD BE REALLY COOL. I WANTED TO COVER IT AND I SAID CYNTHIA'S GOING TO BE IN TOWN, AND I HAD THIS IDEA TO, LIKE, MAKE IT A MOVING VANITY FAIR COVER AND IT WAS, LIKE, GOWNS AND IT WOULD BE VERY REGAL AND SHE WAS, LIKE, I PACKED NOTHING. YOU HAVE TO BRING ME CLOTHES. I WAS, LIKE, WHAT DO I HAVE THAT WILL FIT THIS TINY FRAME.

>> AND IT'S THE SUPER COOL VIDEO, SO SHE'S IN MY YOGA CLOTHES.

>> HER PANTS AND LOVING IT.

>> AND WE HAD OUR FACES BEAT AND SHE SAID WHAT IF WE DON'T MOVE AT ALL, AND I SAID OH, MY GOSH, I'M SUCH A MOVING SINGER. MAYBE AT THE BRIDGE AND WHAT IF WE NEVER AND I WAS, LIKE, ALL RIGHT AND THIS IS THE COOL THING ABOUT WORKING WITH CYN.

>> YOU SAW IN THAT VIDEO, THAT'S THE FIRST PART, AND YOU'VE BEEN TOURING AND SELLING OUT CONCERTS WORLDWIDE FOR YEARS NOW. YOU DID A SHOW AT THE APOLLO A FEW MONTHS AGO THAT SOLD LIKE THAT AND YOUR SPECIAL GUEST WAS --

>> I LOVE HOW YOU DESCRIBE ME. IT FEELS SO GOOD.

>> I SAY WHAT I SEE, GIRL. I'M THINKING HOW, OF COURSE, OF COURSE CYNTHIA LOOKED LIKE A FASHION ICON IN YOUR YOGA CLOTHES BECAUSE SHE LOOKS LIKE A FASHION ICON IN THE VIDEO SHE POSTS OF HERSELF EVERY DAY, YOU KNOW?

>> SHE'S LIKE A FITNESS MODEL IN HER STORIES. YEAH. I CAN TAKE THE CLOTHES THAT I'M GETTING RID OF BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN OUT OF STYLE FOR A DECADE AND SHE PUT THEM ON AND STARTED A NEW WORLDWIDE TREND. SO I'M JUST SAYING WHAT I SEE, AND CYNTHIA CAME TO BE YOUR SPECIAL GUEST AT THAT APOLLO CONCERT, AND IT SEEMS TO ME THE STORY I MADE UP IN MY HEAD IT WAS, LIKE, LET'S WORK TOGETHER.

>> PRETTY MUCH.

>> ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS CAME DOWNSTAIRS AFTER THE SHOW AND CYNTHIA WAS SAYING GOOD-BYE BECAUSE SHE'S A VERY RESPONSIBLE PERFORMER AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SHOW SHE'S, LIKE, I'M GOING HOME TO BED AND MEANWHILE I'M GOING OUT. MY BEST FRIEND ARE, LIKE, YOU TWO ARE SO -- WE HAD FUN UP THERE, BUT I NEVER KNOW HOW THAT WILL TRANSLATE. I JUST KNOW WE HAD A BALL. YOU TWO ARE SO MAGICAL TOGETHER. YOU TWO SHOULD DO A TV SPECIAL. I CALLED HER AND SAID I HAVE THIS IDEA WHAT WE CAN DO QUICKLY AND EASILY, I THINK, GO BACK TO THE APOLLO AND DO THE TV SPECIALS A LA PAULA, LIKE A SHOW.

>> I DON'T WANT TO SAY TOO MUCH. LET'S JUST SAY THAT THE INSPIRATION IS THAT. WILL WE HAVE JOKES AND HIJINKS? NO. THAT'S NOT OUR STYLE, BUT INEVITABLY I WILL DO SOMETHING UNGRACEFUL AND HAVE TO COVER FOR MYSELF.

>> SOMETHING ALWAYS GOES WRONG. IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AND I'M JUST GOING TO GET THE THING ON YOU.

>> OH, MY GOSH, THOSE NAILS AND STAB EACH OTHER'S EYES OUT. LOOK AT THESE. ? YOU HAVE THE SAME KIND OF NAILS. WHEN DID WE DO THIS? DID WE DECIDE?

>> NO. CAN THE CAMERA GET THEM?

>> AND THEY'RE THE OUTFITS AND WE HAVE THE NAILS. WEIRD. BECAUSE SHE HAS -- I'M, LIKE THE EXTRAVAGANT ONE, AND GINA'S AMAZING.

>> I'M THINKING EITHER OF YOU WEAR CONTACT LENSES.

>> SO I ALWAYS GO OVER THE TOP WITH MY NAILS JUST BECAUSE I CAN AND I LIKE IT AND SHE'S VERY SUBTLE WITH THE NAILS, BUT WHAT'S HAPPENED IS WE'VE DONE A VERSION OF THE SAME THING.

>> BECAUSE I HAVE THESE TRIANGLES ARE GOING DOWN AND SHE ALSO HAS ONE TRY ANGLE AND I HAVE THIS MASSIVE CLUSTER OF SPARKLE AND SHE HAS TWO.

>> I CAME INTO YOUR LANE. WE'RE SWERVING.

>> AND THE SISTERHOOD OF THE BRAIN GOING ON.

>> NAVY WITH BOLD FLOWERS.

>> WE DID NOT CALL EACH OTHER ABOUT THIS. THIS IS NOT ON PURPOSE. THIS IS A COMPLETE MISTAKE. LIKE, WE DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.

>> I THINK SO. YEAH.

>> LET'S GO BACK TO NIGHT DIVINE. LET THERE BE CHRISTMAS SONGS? HOLIDAY SONGS? IT'S LITERALLY THAT. IF YOU DON'T LIKE CHRISTMAS SONGS --

>> THIS IS NOT THE CONTENT FOR YOU.

>> WILL YOU ALSO BE TOUCHING INTO NO, NO, I DID SOMETHING BAD?

>> NO. IT'S CHRISTMAS.

>> GREAT. ALSO, WHEN WE DO THESE THINGS YOU CAN BE THERE BE THERE BECAUSE I CAN'T TELL YOU WHO THE SPECIAL GUESTS ARE, BUT WHEN YOU SEE WHEN THEY ARE AND YOU DIDN'T COME YOU'LL BE SAD. WHEN YOU DIDN'T COME TO THE APOLLO IN JULY AND YOU MISSED THE ONE TIME WE WERE LIVE YOU'LL BE SAD. I TRY AND CREATE, I TRY TO, WITH THE PRODUCERS TO CREATE A MOMENT.

>> YES.

>> OKAY. SO THE SHOW IS ON DECEMBER 17th BECAUSE THEY'RE ON SALE NOW. THEY'RE SELLING FAST.

>> YES.

>> I ALREADY HAVE MY TICKET.

>> GOOD GIRL.

>> CAN'T WAIT. I BELIEVE THERE'S EVEN LIKE A VIP EXPERIENCE YOU CAN GET. WHAT'S INCLUDED WITH THAT?

>> US.

>> WE GET TO MEET YOU?

>> HIGHLY RECOMMEND, BY THE WAY. YOU TWO ARE FUN TO HANG OUT WITH.

>> I WANT TO GO BACK TO WHEN YOU FIRST MET. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU WERE ALREADY AWARE OF SHOSHANA?

>> DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN SHE WAS FIRST ON YOUR RADAR?

>> OH, GOD.

>> WHAT WAS I LISTENING TO? WHAT WAS I LISTENING TO? I THINK SOMEONE SENT ME A SONG THAT YOU WERE ON, AND I CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH IT WAS, AND I REMEMBER LISTENING TO THAT CONSISTENTLY, AND THEN I JUST WANTED TO MEET YOU. THAT WAS IT, REALLY. I HAVE THIS THING ABOUT MEETING PEOPLE WHO ARE UNBELIEVABLY TALENTED BECAUSE I THINK THERE'S SOMETHING VERY, VERY SPECIAL ABOUT THEM, AND I THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL ABOUT YOU AND YOUR VOICE WHEN I HEARD IT AND I WAS, LIKE, I NEED TO MEET THIS WOMAN NOW BECAUSE I THINK SHE WOULD GET ME.

>> AND YOU DID.

>> YOUR VOICES BLEND TOGETHER WELL, AND I KNOW SOMETIMES YOU GET TWO TALENTED PEOPLE AND THE BLEND DOESN'T QUITE WORK AND I CAN'T IMAGINE THOSE PEOPLE DOING A WHOLE SHOW TOGETHER, BUT YOU TWO, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GO INTO THE SIGNATURE WHISTLE TONES THAT YOU'RE SO KNOWN FOR, AND YOUR DEEP VOICE IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE MADE FOR EACH OTHER.

>> I THINK IT'S MOSTLY TO DO WITH HOW WE LISTEN TO EACH OTHER. I -- WHEN WE SING TOGETHER AND WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER, I'M NOT TRYING TO OUTSING HER AND I WANT TO BE IN WHATEVER POCKET AND THAT'S WHEN WE COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER AND I THINK THAT BRINGS US JOY TO HEAR US TOGETHER AND IT GIVES ME CHILLS UP MY SPINE WHEN WE GET RIGHT IN THE POCKET AND WE SOUND LIKE ONE PERSON.

>> THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY. IT'S LIKE ONE INSTRUMENT YOU'RE PLAYING TOGETHER.

>> BUT THAT'S SUCH A GIFT AND RARITY TO FIND IN ANOTHER SINGER BECAUSE LIKE YOU SAID, THERE ARE EXTRAORDINARY SINGERS OUT THERE, BUT NOT EVERYONE IS ABLE TO -- IT'S NOT ABOUT WE HAVE VERY DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS AND VERY DIFFERENT SOUNDS AND VERY DIFFERENT STRENGTHS AND THE ABILITY TO LISTEN AND BLEND AND MORPH INTO ONE VOICE IS A SPECIAL THING TO FIND AND ANY ARTIST I GET TO SING WITH, IT IS REALLY AMAZING POWERFUL FEELING.

>> DO YOU ANTICIPATE RECORDING TOGETHER AT ANY POINT?

>> I'D LIKE TO AT SOME POINT.

>> I HADN'T THOUGHT ABOUT IT, BUT THAT WOULD BE A DREAM.

>> CAN I DO IT, PLEASE?

>> DONE. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST. IT'S HAPPENING.

>> I KNOW YOU ARE UNIQUE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY THERE, BUT I THINK IT SCREAMS LIVE ALBUM TO BE RELEASED NEXT CHRISTMAS.

>> I WISH YOU KNEW HOW MUCH THAT COSTS.

>> YEAH.

>> ESPECIALLY AT THE APOLLO. I'M GOING TO BE HONEST. IT'S A LEGENDARY SPACE, BUT THEIR FEES TO DO ANYTHING THERE. I WAS GOING DO A LIVE FROM THE APOLLO THIS SUMMER AND IT'S JUST EXORBITANT.

>> SO SHOULD WE START THE KICKSTARTER NOW?

>> YEAH! YOU BETTER HURRY BECAUSE WE HAVE A BOOK AND A RECORDING.

>> THAT'S ON MY WISH LIST IS DUET.

>> NOTED.

>> I WILL START THAT KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN. DO YOU -- THIS WILL PUT YOU OVER THE TOP A LITTLE BIT, BUT IF YOU CAN THINK OF SOME SONGS THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SING TOGETHER OR LIKE A DREAM DUET I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR WHAT THAT WOULD BE.

>> OOH!

>> SOMETHING WHITNEY. I NEVER THINK OF, LIKE, PROPER DUETS. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? OH, THAT COULD BE GOOD.

>> I JUST GOT CHILLS.

>> OOH!

>> WAIT, SHOSHANA, HOW DOES THAT SONG GO? \M HE FILLS ME UP, FILLS ME UP \M \M HE BRINGS ME JOY \M \M HE'S ALL I'VE GOT \M ALL I GOT IN THIS WORLD \M \M HE'S ALL OF THE MAN THAT I NEED \M [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]

>> I WAS DYING INSIDE RIGHT NOW.

>> WHY DID WE DO THAT? BECAUSE YOU STARTED IT. SHE LITERALLY SET THE BEAR TRAP AND I WALKED RIGHT IN.

>> I JUST FOLLOWED YOU.

>> LISTEN, YOU FIND THE FUNDS AND YOU CLEAR HER SCHEDULE AND I'M THERE.

>> AND SEE WHAT WE CAN PUT TOGETHER.

>> AND WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE.

>> SHE HAS A PROPER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY. I DO.

>> HOLIDAY.

>> SHE HAS THIS THING ABOUT THE ENGLISH ACCENT AND SHE'S TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT AND EVERY TIME SHE SAYS SOMETHING SHE LOOKS AT ME AND ASKS IS THAT GOOD? THAT'S TERRIBLE. IT'S NOT TERRIBLE.

>> KICK UP THE --

>> TERRIBLE.

>> THAT WAS GOOD. THAT WAS GOOD.

>> IN ENGLAND, AND WHEN I'M IN LONDON AND I'M SPEAKING AND IT'S GOOD. IT'S GOOD AND DON'T LIE. SHE WAS, LIKE, YOU SOUND RIDICULOUS.

>> AND WE ALL KNOW SHE CAN DO THE BEST AMERICAN ACCENT. YOU CAN'T PLAY SEELY.

>> THEY THINK EVERYONE IS FROM NEW YORK. I'M, LIKE, I'M THE GEEK THAT GOES I'M FROM AMERICA. WHERE FROM? WHICH PART? BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE SAME.

>> GOOD FOR YOU.

>> AN ENGLISH ACCENT? WHICH PART?

>> SEE? RIGHT? LIVERPOOL. LIVERPOOL IS VERY, VERY DIFFERENT. I DON'T KNOW. THAT WAS TERRIBLE. AND IT WAS BAD. I WANT TO STOP BECAUSE THIS IS JUST GOING TO GET WORSE BECAUSE NOW I'M FEELING INSECURE.

>> DON'T BE INSECURE, AND NOTHING TO FEEL INSECURE FOR. YOU DO IT REALLY WELL WHEN YOU'RE NOT DOING DICK VAN DYKE.

>> YOU KNOW, I'LL TELL YOU LATER, SORRY.

>> COME ON! GIVE IT TO US. HANGING OUT WITH GABRIEL IN LONDON. THEY SPEAK VERY SIMILAR.

>> YOU GUYS -- YOU GUYS HAVE A VERY SIMILAR ENERGY AND WHEN I'M WITH YOU, YOU JUST FEEL LIKE CYNTHIA. VERY STRANGE.

>> IMAGINE THE TWO OF US TOGETHER.

>> I CAN'T.

>> GABRIEL IS LIKE ONE OF THE MOST SPECIAL BEINGS YOU WILL MEET EVER.

>> DO YOU WANT TO GIVE US A LAST NAME?

>> MUKAKE. HE IS WONDERFUL. HE'S CURRENTLY IN "HAMILTON.”

>> HE LEFT A WEEK AGO?

>> IT'S BEEN A WEEK. AND HE DID “THE COLOR PURPLE” WITH ME IN LONDON AND HE PLAYED MY SON AND HE IS JUST -- HE IS JUST GORGEOUS. I JUST -- HE -- I FEEL LIKE HE HAS, LIKE, THE ESSENCE OF A MOTHER IN HIM. LIKE HE JUST IS A CAREER AND HE JUST WANTS TO TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE. HE COOKS UP A STORM. HE HAS THE MOST AMAZING FASHION SENSE AND BARELY EVER WEARS FULL-LENGTH PANTS AND HE IS ALWAYS IN SHORTS. IT'S AMAZING AND IT'S FINE. LIKE, HE CAN DO A TURBAN THAT'S PROBABLY BETTER THAN MINE. IT'S REALLY ANNOYING BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO IT, BUT HE'S ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PEOPLE AND WE KNOW HIM VERY, VERY WELL.

>> I THINK HE WAKES UP AND --

>> NO, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. HE CAME TO NEW YORK, AS WELL JUST TO VISIT AND WE SPENT SOME TIME TOGETHER, AND HE'S AN AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHER, AS WELL.

>> I LOVE THAT THE WAY YOU DESCRIBE HIM IS LIKE SOMEBODY ELSE DESCRIBING YOU.

>> OH.

>> WELL, I LOVE HIM.

>> DO YOU COOK?

>> I DO COOK, ACTUALLY.

>> ARE YOU AN AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHER.

>> I'M NOT BAD, ACTUALLY.

>> I'M NOT TRYING TO TAKE A PHOTO. LISTEN, DO NOT START ASKING ME TO START TAKING HEADSHOTS BECAUSE I CAN'T DO IT.

>> YEAH. YOU'RE GOOD AT EVERYTHING YOU DO. THIS IS THE WOMAN THAT RAN THE NEW YORK MARATHON ON A TWO-SHOW DAY.

>> I DIDN'T RUN THE NEW YORK MARATHON AND DID TWO SHOWS. I DID THE BROOKLYN HALF -- HALF MARATHON AND THEN DID TWO SHOWS. IT'S VERY DIFFERENT TO DOING FULL MARATHON.

>> VERY DIFFERENT.

>> IT IS. 26 MILES IS NOT THE SAME -- IT'S ONLY A TWO-SHOW DAY. I DID THE NEW YORK MARATHON SEPARATE TO EVERYTHING ELSE.

>> GOT IT. IT'S ALL RUMORS. IT'S ALL HORRIBLE LIES. LISTEN, ON THE DAYS WHEN I CAN GET OUT OF BED, CYNTHIA DID, AND NOW I'LL MEND MY BROOKLYN HALF MARATHON.

>> BELIEVE ME, MY KNEES TOLD ME -- AND SILLY THINGS LIKE THAT BECAUSE THAT WAS PAINFUL.

>> YOU'RE A MACHINE. AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU'RE A MACHINE AND YOU'RE CAREFUL ABOUT TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF. LIKE, SHOSHANA SAID, AT THE END OF THE NIGHT YOU'RE GOING TO BED AND I'M CURIOUS TO HEAR FROM BOTH OF YOU ABOUT WHAT YOUR SELF-CARE REGIMENS ARE.

>> FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT YOU SEE ONLY HALF OF THE STORY AND I'M GOING TO OUT YOU A LITTLE BIT AND YOU SEE HER ON THE PELETON ON HER STORIES ON HER INSTAGRAM. HI! AND SHE'S TALKING ABOUT THE BROOKLYN HALF MARATHON BECAUSE WE TALKED ABOUT IT WHEN I WAS IN YOUR HOUSE. FRIENDS IN THE AUDIENCE, I LOVE IT. SHE WAS DOING WELL FILMING HARRIET, RIGHT? IT WAS WILDLY, PHYSICALLY CHALLENGING FOR HER SO SHE'S ON THE BIKE EVERY MORNING REGARDLESS OF WHAT TIME SHE GOT HOME AND REGARDLESS OF WHAT HER CALL TIME IS SHE STILL MANAGES TO GET UP AND DO THAT AND THEN BE IN PHRASING TEMPERATURES AND WADING WATER AND IT'S CRAZY WHAT SHE PUTS HER BODY THROUGH.

>> I HEARD ABOUT HOW HARD YOU WERE WORKING ON THAT SET AND HE SAID I JUST SHOW UP AND CYNTHIA IS RUNNING THROUGH THE MUD IN CORSETS AND OTHER THINGS.

>> HERE'S A QUESTION FOR YOU, DO HARRIET AND SEELY HAVE DIFFERENT AMERICAN ACCENTS?

>> YES. YES, THEY DO.

>> CAN YOU GIVE US A SENTENCE THAT SHOWS OFF THE DIFFERENCES?

>> GOD!

>> THAT'S LIKE -- BACK TO SEELY. WHAT WOULD SHE SAY?

>> LIKE, WHAT IF YOU SAID COME SEE SHOSHANA IN NIGHT DIVINE AS SEELY.

>> DO YOU KNOW IT'S REALLY WEIRD? I FEEL SACRILEGIOUS, JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE REALLY -- AND ONE OF THEM IS AN ACTUAL, REAL PERSON, AND IT FEELS ODD TO PUT THEM ON, AND I GUESS I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF THERE WAS A WORD, AND THEY WOULD PRONOUNCE IT OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, AND WE DON'T HAVE TO GO SHOW IT TO THAT, AND I THINK SEELY BECAUSE ALSO THEY'RE VERY DIFFERENT TIMES IN HISTORY. SO SEELY IS 1940-SOMETHING. 1930s AND HARRIET IS 1800. SO THE TWO -- HARRIET IS CLOSER TO, I GUESS, CLOSER TO AFRICA SO IT'S A DEEPER, RICHER SOUND THAN SEELY WOULD BE. SEELY IS MORE ROUNDED AND OPEN. SO I THINK IT'S TAKEN DIFFERENTLY. EVERY WORD WOULD BE DIFFERENT.

>> YEAH, BUT THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT ARE REALLY, LIKE, DIFFERENT. WHAT WAS THE -- I'M TRYING TO -- OH, CONTINUE.

>> ACTUALLY EMBODYING THESE WOMEN, BUT IF I COULD THINK SOMETHING THAT THEY WOULD BOTH SAY DIFFERENTLY. I'LL LET YOU KNOW.

>> WE ARE GOING TO TURN THE QUESTIONS OVER TO THE AUDIENCE, AND THE FIRST THING I WANT TO SAY IS HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THE GRAVITY WITH WHICH YOU RECEIVED THAT QUESTION AND YOU COULD HAVE JUST PUT IT ON AND FARMED THE PLUG THAT I WAS TRYING TO NOT SO SUBTLY DROP IN, BUT YOU HAVE SUCH RESPECT FOR THESE CHARACTERS WHETHER THEY'RE HISTORICAL PEOPLE AND WHETHER THEY'RE FICTIONAL, AND I THINK THAT FROM THE EXPERIENCES THAT I'VE HAD, YOU SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME GRAVITY WITH WHICH YOU RESPECT THE MATERIAL AND I DON'T WANT THAT TO BE LOST ON ANYBODY. SO, THANK YOU FOR THAT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> LET'S GO TO THE AUDIENCE AND ASK SOME QUESTIONS.

>> HELLO. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M TALKING TO THE QUEENS OF VOCAL PLACEMENTS.

>> AND I WAS WONDERING, YOU WAKE UP ON THE WAY HERE, WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW.

>> GREAT.

>> HONESTLY, I'M LISTENING TO THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC PLAYLIST. AND I ACTUALLY HAVEN'T BEEN LISTENING TO A LOT OF MUSIC BECAUSE I WAS PREPPING FOR SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS. I'M LISTENING TO EVERYTHING, AND I PREFER SILENCE A LOT JUST SO THAT I CAN ORGANIZE MY BRAIN AND -- WHAT'S THE LAST THING, THOUGH, THAT WAS, LIKE -- THERE'S THIS GUY BRUNO MAJOR THAT I LOVE AND THIS GUY JOHN SPLINTOF. THESE TWO MALE SINGERS. I'M MORE INTO GUY SINGERS BECAUSE I'M SUPER PICKY AND I'M SUPER MELLOW AND SOULFUL AND VIBY. SHE ANSWERED THE QUESTION BECAUSE, LIKE, LITERALLY ON THE WAY HERE I WAS LISTENING TO NOTHING JUST BECAUSE RIGHT NOW ALSO COMING OFF OF HARRIET AND ALL OF THAT, LIKE, IT REORGANIZING MY BRAIN AND GETTING INTO THE WORLD OF CONCERTS AND MUSIC AND I HAVE TWO DIFFERENT SETS OF PLAYLISTS AND I HAVE TO MEMORIZE FOR MYSELF. SO IF I'M LISTENING TO TICKETS THEN I'M LEARNING. IF NOT, IT'S PRETTY QUIET AT THE MOMENT. THE LAST THING I LISTENED TO WAS SETH GREEN.

>> NEW STUFF, OLD STUFF?

>> FROM THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM.

>> BECAUSE AS I WAS LISTENING TO OUR MUSIC IT WENT INTO OTHER CHRISTMAS THINGS.

>> THAT'S FUN, AND HE HAS AN ALBUM FROM 2012 AND HE DOES A VERSION OF MR. GRINCH.

>> AMAZING. SO, YEAH.

>> ONE OF THE THINGS YOU AND I HAVE TALKED ABOUT THE LAST TIME YOU WERE HERE WE TALKED ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT SILENCE WAS FOR YOU WHEN YOU ARE EXERCISING WHICH TO ME IF I'M GOING TO GET ON, I NEED SOME LOUD, PUMPING MUSIC AND CYNTHIA IS, LIKE, IT'S TO CLEAR YOUR BODY.

>> I DON'T WANT TO HEAR MY BODY. WHAT IT'S SAYING IS GET OFF THIS MACHINE. IF SHE'S SAYING GET OFF THIS MACHINE THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD GET OFF THE MACHINE.

>> SEE?

>> THEN I WOULD NEVER GET OFF THE COUCH, BECAUSE SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE, IT REALLY HURTS AND YOU GO INTO A MEDITATIVE STATE WHEN YOU'RE WORKING OUT.

>> THERE ARE DAYS WHEN MY BODY IS, LIKE, NO, NO. YOU PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN AND SOMETIMES MY BODY IS, LIKE, I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE.

>> THE JEWISH MOTHER IN ME FEELS BETTER ABOUT THIS.

>> LET'S TAKE ANOTHER QUESTION.

>> HI. I AM SO HONORED TO BE IN YOU GUYS' PRESENCE. SPEAKING OF MOVIES THAT YOU'VE BEEN IN, IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT THERE WILL BE A MUSICAL ADAPTATION FOR FILM FOR "THE COLOR PURPLE.” I WAS WONDERING WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU HOPE THEY KEEP AND ONE THING THAT YOU WANT TO SEE ALTERED THAT WAS IN THE BROADWAY REVIVAL.

>> I HOPE THEY KEEP THE SIMPLICITY THAT WE HAD ON STAGE. THERE'S SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT THAT BECAUSE EVERYTHING WAS EXPOSED, AND I'M -- I'M CURIOUS TO SEE IF THEY ADD MORE MUSIC. IF THEY ADD NEW SONGS OR -- I DON'T KNOW, IF THERE ARE CERTAIN SCENES THAT YOU CAN'T PUT ON STAGE THAT YOU NEED TO SEE ON FILM. LIKE, WHAT ARE THOSE SCENES THAT WE ARE USED TO SEEING?

>> I MEAN THE BIGGEST FOLLOW-UP.

>> DO NOT ASK IT.

>> WHAT'S THE FOLLOW UP? I'M IN THE DARK.

>> WE'LL JUST SAY THAT CASTING HASN'T BEEN ANNOUNCED AND WE'LL FIND OUT WHEN WE'RE SUPPOSED TO FIND OUT.

>> THAT'S THE FAIR WAY OF ADDRESSING THAT.

>> I HEARD WHOEVER THEY CAST IS REALLY BRILLIANT. I DON'T THINK -- I'M SURE THAT SHE WILL BE. ALSO, I WANT TO MENTION NAH SHOSHANA HAS A PRODUCT THAT'S ABOUT TO BE RELEASED ON --

>> WHICH SHE JUST TOLD ME TODAY. I HAD NO IDEA.

>> I FOUND OUT THIS MORNING THAT WE WILL SOON HAVE AN OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE FOR A SONG "A WHOLE NEW WORLD," THE ENCORE AND I HAVE GOTTEN PERMISSION TO SAY IT'S LATE JANUARY AND I'VE HEARD RUMORS THAT THERE MIGHT BE LIKE AN INSTANT DOWNLOADABLE TRACK THAT FEATURES YOU. THAT'S ALL I'M GOING SAY BECAUSE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT'S COMING SOON. WE HAVE TIME FOR ONE MORE QUESTION.

>> HI. I'M OVER HERE.

>> HI. I JUST WANT TO SAY YOU BOTH ARE JUST INCREDIBLY INSPIRING PERFORMERS AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INSPIRING. MY QUESTION IS ARE THERE ANY SONGWRITERS OR COMPOSERS THAT YOU WANT TO WORK WITH OR THAT YOU HAVE WORKED WITH THAT YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO COLLABORATE WITH?

>> IN THE MUSICAL THEATER REALM OR IN THE POP --

>> EITHER WAY. WHICHEVER IS IN YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW.

>> SO I WAS DOING GIRLS ROCK A WHILE AGO, AND I DID THE TRIBUTE TO ARETHA FRANKLIN AND FANTASIA BARRINO WAS DOING IT ALSO AND SHE SAID WE'RE GOING TO MAKE MUSIC, AREN'T WE? I DIDN'T THINK SHE WAS BEING SERIOUS AND WE DID THE QUINCY JONES THING AND SHE WAS, LIKE, HERE'S MY NUMBER. LET'S MAKE MUSIC AND I REALLY WANT TO DO THAT WITH HER.

>> YEAH.

>> I DON'T THINK I'D SURVIVE IT. FANTASIA AS SEELY AND YOU AS SEELY ARE TWO OF THE MOST POWERFUL THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN IN THE THEATER, BUT I HAD TO REMIND MYSELF TO BREATHE, AND I DON'T THINK I CAN HANDLE THE TWO OF YOU AT THE SAME TIME AT THE SAME PLACE.

>> THAT MAKES ME -- I DON'T NEED A QUESTION AFTER THAT. THERE'S NO NEED FOR ME TO SPEAK.

>> THAT'S THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION.

>> WITH THE PEOPLE THAT YOU WANT TO COLLABORATE WITH ARE JUST IN A ROOM --

>> I WANT TO LISTEN TO JASON ROBERTS' MUSIC UNTIL I DIE. I LOVE, WHENEVER I CAN WRAP MY CORD AROUND STEPHEN SCHWARTZ, IT'S A BLESSING AND IN THE POP WORLD, THE ULTIMATE PERSON THAT I WOULD LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH IS JOHN MAYER, AND THAT'S THE RAPID FIRE ANSWER.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT DECEMBER 17th!

>> WHAT HAPPENED?

>> AND HANUKKAH AND VALENTINE'S DAY AND ARBOR DAY.

>> I CAN UNDERSTAND.

>> AND THE SPECIAL GUESTS ON THE 17th AND IS FANTASIA IN TOWN? NO, SHE'S NOT. WHERE IS SHE? I DON'T KNOW WHERE SHE IS RIGHT YOU IN. DON'T BE TOO SPECIFIC. WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE SHOWING UP HERE.

>> LOOK. I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING TO BE ON THE 17th. I'M GOING TO BE WITH YOU SOAKING IN THIS GLORIOUSNESS, AND I'M EXCITED ABOUT HOW, LIKE, IT'S SO CLEAR FROM SHARING SPACE WITH THE TWO OF YOU TOGETHER THAT THIS -- WHILE THIS MIGHT BE A ONE-NIGHT ONLY EVENT, THIS IS NOT A ONE-NIGHT ONLY, EVENT. THERE IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH -- WHAT DO WE CALL IT? SHO-CYNTHIA.

>> SOMEONE CALLED IT SHOTHIA.

>> THAT'S A HASH TAG IF EVER I'VE HEARD ONE. THANK YOU SHOTHIA FOR BEING HERE AND COME BACK AGAIN SOON! [ APPLAUSE ]
