Dennis Quaid & Jamie James Chat Their New Album, "Out Of The Box"

Dennis Quaid & The Sharks origins can be traced to a night when Quaid went to see actor Harry Dean Stanton and his longtime band perform in Los Angeles. Quaid was invited to join the band onstage. At first reluctant, because of his decade-long layoff from music, Quaid finally acquiesced, and his performance sparked a musical kinship between Jamie James—guitar player in Stanton’s band and the Kingbees’ front man—and Quaid that led to them forming their own band. Now, Dennis Quaid & The Sharks have made the first studio album of their 18-year history, "Out Of The Box," and on it listeners will find they specialize in “rock ’n’ roll and country-soul,” or as Quaid calls it, “a junkyard of American music.”

>>> ALL RIGHT, GUYS, GIVE IT UP, DENNIS QUAID AND JAMIE JAMES. DENNIS QUAID AND THE SHARKS. [ APPLAUSE ]

>> WHAT IS GOING ON, GUYS? HOW YOU DOING TODAY? YOU'RE HERE, YOU'RE IN HEAVEN, YOU MADE IT.

>> TODAY'S A GREAT DAY FOR US. WE HAVE -- WE HAVE A RECORD COMING OUT.

>> THIS IS IT TODAY.

>> FIRST SHARKS RECORD.

>> TODAY'S THE RELEASE DATE.

>> TODAY'S THE DAY, MAN.

>> WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT.

>> WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER FOR 18 YEARS, THE SHARKS. OUR FIRST GIG WAS HALLOWEEN NIGHT 2000. AND SAME FIVE GUYS.

>> WOW.

>> NOT MANY MARRIAGES LAST THAT LONG AND WE FINALLY MADE A RECORD, A REAL RECORD WITH THE HELP OF SOME OF GOOD PEOPLE. AND IT'S A BIG DAY.

>> YEAH. WE'RE GOING TO GET DEEP INTO THIS RECORD. BUT FIRST I WANT TO GO BACK TO THAT FATEFUL NIGHT. I BELIEVE IT INVOLVED THE LATE GREAT HARRY DEAN STANTON. CAN YOU TELL US THIS STORY?

>> YEAH, WE WOULDN'T BE HERE IF IT WASN'T FOR HARRY, WOULD WE?

>> NO. THIS IS AN EXTENSION OF BOTH OF OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH HARRY. MORE THAN A MENTOR, I THINK I COULD SPEAK FOR BOTH OF US. A SURROGATE FATHER RULELY AND TRULY. HE WAS AN ICON TO ARTISTS IN TERMS OF MUSIC AND ACTING, BUT FOR DENNIS AND I I THINK MORE IN JUST LIFE. HARRY WAS A REBEL. HE WAS AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT MOST OF ALL, HE HAD JUST INCREDIBLE INTEGRITY AND PERSONALITY.

>> AUTHENTICITY IN MUSIC. HE PLAYED SONGS THAT WERE WRITTEN BY ANONYMOUS, LIKE 200 YEARS AGO, A LOT OF THEM. MEXICAN FOLK SONGS, SONGS OF THE NIGHT TEENth CENTURY AMERICA.

>> DEFINITELY IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, BASICALLY IS WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.

>> HE KNEW A LOT OF IT. HE KNEW A LOT OF LYRICS. WHAT ATTRACTED ME TO HARRY WAS I USED TO DO A SONG ON MY SHOW CALLED EL PASO BY MARTY ROBINS. THE FIRST TIME HE WANTED TO SIT IN WITH ME HE SANG EL PASO AND AFTERWARD I SAID THAT'S GREAT, MAN, BUT DID YOU MAKE THAT UP VERSE ON THE SPOT BECAUSE THAT'S NOT ON THE RECORD. AND HE SAID, OH, NO, THAT'S IN THE SONG. AND THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO CHECK OUT THE SHEET MUSIC AND SURE ENOUGH IT WAS IN THERE. HE WAS VERY METICULOUS ABOUT EVERY SYLLABLE, EVERY WORD, AND THAT'S WHAT HE KIND OF TAUGHT IS TO BE VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT EVERYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOU'RE DOING AS AN ARTIST.

>> ANYWAY, HARRY PASSED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. AND HE WAS 91. AND JAMIE AND I WERE WITH HIM THERE PRETTY CLOSE TO THE TIME THAT HE LEFT THIS EARTH. AND WE WERE THERE --

>> UNTIL THE END.

>> WE TOOK THE BLUETOOTH IN AND STANDING BY HIS BED HE WAS IN HOSPICE AND HE STILL SQUEEZED A FINGER EVEN THOUGH WASN'T OPENING HIS EYES. WE PUT ON MARTY ROBINS EL PASO, ACTUALLY, AND STARTED TO SING IT. THEN HARRY MOUTHED THE WORDS ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SONG.

>> THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT. IT WAS SOMETHING.

>> A LOT OF YOU MAY REMEMBER HARRY, HE WAS THE DAD IN PRETTY IN PINK BACK IN THE DAY. HE'S DONE SO MANY THINGS.

>> SO MANY RECOGNIZABLE.

>> DID AN AMAZING JOB IN A MOVIE CALLED LUCKY.

>> YEAH, NINE YEARS OLD.

>> THAT WAS AN AMAZING MOVIE.

>> IT'S LIKE HE WAS ON THE PHONE AND HAD TO DO A CROSSWORD PUZZLE, RIGHT?

>> YEAH.

>> SO THE STORY GOES, FROM WHAT I CALL, IT'S HALLOWEEN, OR YOU SAID 2000, HE'S PERFORMING WITH YOU, JAMIE, IN A BAND AND I THINK YOU GET CALLED UP ON A STAGE TO PERFORM?

>> NO, HARRY --

>> HARRY DEAN WAS PLAYING AT THE MINT WITH JAMIE AND A COUPLE OTHER GUYS THAT WERE IN THE SHARKS TOO. SO I'VE GONE THERE. I HADN'T PLAYED MUSIC IN REALLY ALMOST TEN YEARS.

>> YEAH.

>> AND I GOT UP ON STAGE WITH --

>> YEAH, I ASKED DENNIS IF HE WANTED TO COME UP AND SIT IN WITH US. AT FIRST HE WAS LIKE NO, NOT REALLY. AND I UNDERSTOOD THAT ARE RECAME  -- HE CAME DOWN JUST TO CHILL. I THINK HE SAW US RELATING TO THE AUDIENCE, IT WAS REALLY RELAX. YOU CAN'T WATCH HARRY DEAN AND NOT BE RELAXED BECAUSE HE STANDS WITH A CIGARETTE, A JACK AND A COKE, HE'S GOT EVERYTHING GOING ON. HE JUST HAS FUN. SO DENNIS CAME UP AND PLAYED AND THERE WAS A CONNECTION THERE RIGHT AWAY. YOU KNOW, IT WAS ELECTRIFYING, YOU KNOW.

>> SO I -- THERE'S AN INSUING CONVERSATION BETWEEN YOU TWO, IS IT THE NEXT DAY? LET'S DO SOMETHING ELSE TOGETHER?

>> A LITTLE TIME PASSED BUT ANYWAY HARRY DEAN GAVE US BLESSING FOR US TO START A BAND, BASICALLY. AND THAT'S WHAT WE DID. AND WE'RE STILL TOGETHER AFTER 18 YEARS.

>> WELL, DENNIS, BEST KNOWN AS AN ACTOR. YOUR CAREER GOES SO FAR BACK. THERE WAS A TIME WHERE I FEEL LIKE YOUR PASSIONS INTERSECTED. YOU PLAYED JERRY LEE LEWIS IN GREAT BALLS OF FIRE. HOW MUCH DID THAT STOKE YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC?

>> I WAS A MUSICIAN BEFORE I WAS AN ACTOR.

>> YOU WERE?

>> YEAH. I WAS A MUSICIAN BEFORE AN ACTOR, AGE OF 12, WITH THE GUITAR, AND STARTED WRITING SONGS IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE I WAS NEVER ABLE TO SHRED A GUITAR LIKE HE COULD SHRED A GUITAR AND THAT'S WHAT I DID IN MY ROOM ALONE. AND YOU KNOW, THAT TURNED INTO ACTING, REALLY KIND OF TOOK OVER, AND THEN, BUT I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET INTO FILM, THAT HAD MUSIC IN IT, AND I DID A FILM CALLED THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA, BACK IN THE LATE '70s, I GUESS, CHRISTIAN McNICHOL, IN FACT, AND ENDED UP WITH THREE OR FOUR SONGS IN THERE THAT I WROTE AND THAN CLOSER TO YOU, THAT I WROTE FOR THE BIG EASY. AND A COUPLE OF OTHER FILMS WHERE THEY'VE INTERSECTED. BUT YOU KNOW, AS FAR AS MUSIC GOES, IT IS A, IT IS A CAREER, YOU KNOW, THAT YOU REALLY HAVE TO DEVOTE A LOT OF, I MEAN A LOT OF TIME TO, AND WHAT IS GREAT NOW IN MY LIFE IS I'M NOT PLAYING THE LEAD SO MUCH ANYMORE, I COME IN FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS, LIKE A HITMAN ON A FILM, AND EVERYBODY IS HAPPY HOPEFULLY WHEN I LEAVE, BUT I REALLY DEVOTE THE TIME TO IT NOW AND SO I'M BUILDING, MUSIC IS THE CENTER NOW.

>> SO YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN DIGGING IT TOGETHER FOR YEARS NOW. AT WHAT POINT DO YOU DECIDE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE THIS ACT TO THE STUDIO, AND YOU'RE GOING TO DO AN LP?

>> WE TOOK A HIATUS FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS FOR MANY DIFFERENT REASONS AND THEN I WAS PLAYING GOLF WITH MY FRIEND T BONE BURNETTE, AND IT WAS AN IN, HE WAS AN INCREDIBLE MUSICIAN, DONE SO MANY SOUND TRACKS.

>> CRAZY HEART.

>> O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?

>> YES.

>> AND JUST TALKING ABOUT WANTING TO DO A REAL RECORD. AND HE WAS A GREAT FACILITATOR FOR US. HE SET US UP OVER AT VILLAGE RECORDING. IN THE BIG ROOM OVER THERE. WHICH HAS A REAL LIVE FEEL. AND HIS GREAT ENGINEER, MIKE PERSONTAY, A CO-PRODUCER ON THE RECORD, AND TOOK ABOUT NINE MONTHS AND CUT 25 TRACKS AND 13 OF THEM MADE THE KIT -- THE CUT.

>> WE GOT A PREVIEW OF ONE OF THE SONGS A MINUTE AGO BUT I FEEL LIKE THIS ALBUM IS INCREDIBLY ECLECTIC IN THE VARIOUS FILES AND INFUSION OF STYLES REALLY, SO I'M GOING TO HIT YOU WITH THE ANNOYING MUSIC QUESTION THAT ALWAYS EVERYBODY HAS TO ASK, HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?

>> I ALWAYS SAID WE WERE A JUNKYARD OF AMERICAN MUSIC. BECAUSE WE WERE LIKE ROCK AND ROLL AND BLUES AND VERY COUNTRY INFLUENCED AND THERE IS A LITTLE LIKE LOUNGE MUSIC, DEAN MARTIN AND FRANK SINATRA THROWN IN THERE TOO, BECAUSE I THOUGHT OF MY DAD. BUT NOW THEY CALL IT AMERICANA.

>> I WOULD CALL IT CITY AND WESTERN. THAT'S WHAT I WOULD CALL IT. BUT I WANT TO GET BACK TO YOUR QUESTION ABOUT HOW DO YOU COME ABOUT, THAT WAS A GOOD QUESTION, ABOUT DOING AN ALBUM AFTER ALL THIS TIME AND I THINK THE KEY THING IS DENNIS HAS BEEN WRITING SONGS AS OF LATE, AS OF THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, AND WHEN YOU HAVE THESE SONGS THAT KIND OF JUST NEED TO GET OUT, WE BRING THEM TO ME AND WE WOULD WORK ON THEM AND WE WOULD GO AND SHOW THE GUYS, AND WE WOULD GET EXCITED ABOUT THIS. THIS IS NEW MATERIAL. LIKE AT THIS STAGE OF OUR CAREERS, GOING, WOW, THIS IS NEW STUFF. AND WE HAD ENOUGH, AND THEN FINALLY, REMEMBER, DENNIS, I SAID MAYBE WE SHOULD RECORD THIS. AND DENNIS PLAYED GOLF, AND HE SAID WE GOT THE STUDIO, AND THE THING, AND IT ALL CAME TOGETHER, ALL OF THE SIDES KIND OF CAME TOGETHER. AND THAT'S, WE NEEDED TO RECORD THE SONGS.

>> AND YOU GUYS COME FROM ORIGINALLY FROM WORLDS APART, TORONTO, I BELIEVE.

>> YES, I'M FROM TORONTO. JUST ACROSS THE BORDER, MAN.

>> YES, YES. FROM HERE. BUT FROM TEXAS, IT IS ALMOST TWO COUNTRIES AWAY. BUT DO YOU FEEL LIKE THAT PLAYS INTO SORT OF THE VARIANCE OF STYLES ON THE ALBUM?

>> YES, JIM WALSH, FROM BUFFALO, HE STARTED A GROUP IN 1970 CALLED SPIRO GYRO AND SOME OF THAT JAZZ FUSION THING AND KEN STING, THE KEYBOARD PLAYER, PLAYED WITH ROGER MILLER UNTIL HE DIED. AND TOM, WE DON'T TALK ABOUT TOM THE BASS PLAYER.

>> HE SHALL NOT BE NAMED?

>> NO, NOM PLAYED WITH ME ALL THE TIME, WITH HARRY DEAN. AND HE'S A SOLID JOURNEYMAN.

>> IN THE TITLE OF THE ALBUM, OUT OF THE BOX, IT WAS SORT OF THE AMBITION THAT YOU GUYS WERE GOING TO SORT OF TRY TO TRANSCEND GENRE, YOU KNOW, AT LEAST FROM TRACK TO TRACK?

>> THE WHOLE IDEA OF THE SONG OUT OF THE BOX IS ABOUT THINKING OUT OF THE BOX, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU, WE ALL FEEL THAT WE GET STUCK IN LIFE AND THE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD IS TELLING YOU, YOU CAN'T DO THIS, OR YOU HAVE TO DO IT THIS WAY, YOU DON'T DO IT THIS WAY, YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THIS, THE TRAGEDY THAT HAS VISITED YOU AND EVERYBODY WANTS TO GET BETTER, BUT YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES IT TAKES YOURSELF PRACTICING, THINKING, THROWING OFF OLD HABITS OF THE WAY WE THINK, OR THE WAY WE DO THINGS. JUST TO THINK OUT OF THE BOX. TRY A DIFFERENT WAY.

>> AND REALLY, IT FEELS, IT FEELS CLEARER LISTENING TO THE ALBUM, THAT THERE WAS A GOAL TO SORT OF CREATE A VARIANCE FROM LITERALLY FROM SONG TO SONG. TAKE FOR INSTANCE THE FIRST THREE SONGS ON THE ALBUM, ARE ALL, I THINK YOU COULD SAY LOVE BALLED A, AND THEY SOUND DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT FROM ONE TO THE NEXT.

>> DIFFERENT GENRES. THERE AREN'T RULES ABOUT EVERYTHING. ACCORDING TO THE RULES WE SHOULDN'T BE HERE RIGHT NOW, RIGHT? BUT WE WILL BE THE OLDEST GUYS TO MAKE IT IN ROCK AND ROLL.

>> NICE.

>> THAT'S WHAT WE'RE AFTER HERE. I MEAN THERE'S A LOT OF BANDS OUT THERE FROM THE '60s AND '70s AND '80s STILL DOING IT. GOD BLESS THEM. AND YOU KNOW, LOVE IT. BUT WE'RE THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. AT THIS POINT. WE'RE JUST LATE BLOOMERS.

>> WELL, ONE OF THE SONGS WE HEARD WAS ON MY WAY TO HEAVEN, ANOTHER SONG CALLED WALK WITH ANGELS. WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL OR RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE ON THE ALBUM?

>> I THINK ALL SONGS IN THE END ARE LOVE SONGS. WHY DOES ANYBODY SIT DOWN AND WRITE A SONG ANYWAY? BECAUSE THEY'RE DRIVEN BY THEIR PASSION. AND THEY HAVE TO SAY IT FOR SOME REASON. IT IS IMPORTANT TO THEM. AND THEY WANT OTHERS TO FEEL, TO BE UNIVERSAL, TO FEEL WHAT THEY FEEL. IN MUSIC. AND THAT'S LOVE. AND MUSIC IS A VIBRATION LIKE LOVE AND THAT'S HA -- THAT'S WHAT THAT IS. AND THAT INCLUDES A LOVE OF OUR WORLD, THE LOVE OF GOD, THE LONG OF HOWEVER YOU CONCEIVE IT TO BE. BUT MUSIC SEEMS TO BE THE LANGUAGE OF GOD TO ME. BECAUSE YOU DON'T REALLY HAVE TO EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH OR HINDU OR WHATEVER IT IS TO APPRECIATE IT.

>> YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO GO TO CHURCH.

>> WHATEVER IS THE FEELING.

>> AMEN.

>> THERE ARE A COUPLE OF DOORS COVERS WE HAVE TO BALK ABOUT ON THIS RECORD, L.A. WOMEN AND RIDERS OF THE STORM. WHAT DID IT MEAN TO GET TO CHANNEL THOSE GUY, TO CHANNEL JIM MORRISON, TO GET TO PUT YOUR OWN SPIN ON THESE CLASSICS?

>> THOSE ARE SONG, L.A. WOMAN, WE'VE BEEN DOING LIKE FOR 15 YEARS AS A BAND. IT TAKES A LOT OF PRACTICE TO DO THAT SONG, TOO.

>> TO DO IT JUSTICE. AND THEN WE STARTED DOING WRITE YOUR OWN STORM, YEARS AGO, MUSIC WE GREW UP WITH, WE LOVE AND WE HAD THE GREAT EXPERIENCE A MONTH AGO OF, WE DID SAINT JUDE'S HOSPITAL BENEFIT, AND JAMIE AND I WERE ON STAGE, AND DID WRITERS OF THE STORM WITH JOHN DENSMORE AND KRIEGER.

>> WOW.

>> OF THE ORIGINAL DOORS.

>> COOL.

>> THE LAST TWO SURVIVING DOORS. THAT WAS LIKE A DREAM.

>> YES.

>> A DREAM COME TRUE.

>> SOUNDED LIKE IT. IT SOUNDED GOOD. IT JUST SOUNDED LIKE, TO ME, IT SOUNDED LIKE THE RECORD ALMOST. LIKE A BLEND OF THEIR RECORD AND A BLEND OF OUR RECORD AND IT WAS AMAZING.

>> YES.

>> SO OBVIOUSLY, IT MUST HAVE BEEN EASY TO GET THAT, ONCE YOU HAD THAT EXPERIENCE, EASY TO GET THAT SIGN-OFF FOR THE COVERS OF THE ALBUM.

>> NO, WE DID THE COVERS BEFORE THAT. AND IT IS FUNNY, THE TERM COVERS, SUCH A TERM, FOR HOW WE APPROACH A SONG, IT IS NOT THE COVER, THE MINUTE WE START PLAYING IT, IT IS OUR SONG. THE SONG IS, EVERYBODY OWNS IT. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? WHEN DENNIS SINGS IT, IT MAKES IT HIS SONG. IT IS LIKE JOHNNY CASH SANG IT, YOU TAKE A SONG AND MAKE IT YOURS AND THAT'S WHAT WE KIND OF DO WITH THESE SONGS.

>> LIKE DOING A PLAY. IT IS AN INTERPRETATION EVERY TIME.

>> SURE. IS THERE A TOUR IN YOUR FUTURE?

>> WE DID ABOUT 40 TO 50 DATES LAST YEAR. AND WE WILL KEEP GRINDING.

>> WE ARE GOING TO DOUBLE THAT AT LEAST, I THINK, THIS COMING YEAR.

>> NICE.

>> THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

>> NICE.

>> DENNIS, I READ A QUOTE FROM YOU THAT SAID WHEN YOU PERFORM, YOU MAKE A COMPLETE AND UTTER FOOL OF YOURSELF. CAN YOU EXPAND ON THIS?

>> WELL, OBVIOUSLY, FROM THE MIDAIR THING AND THE SOCKS.

>> THAT IS A REAL JUMP BY THE WAY.

>> WE'RE THE ONLY BAND TO OFFER A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. PEOPLE PAY THEIR HARD-EARNED MONEY TO COME THERE AND WHAT WE WANT TO SHOW PEOPLE IS A REALLY GOOD TIME.

>> EXCEPT IN SOME STATES AND CANADA AND ALL OF EUROPE.

>> BUT, WE WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. AND THEY PAY THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY AND WE WANT THEM TO FORGET ABOUT EVERYTHING OF THE WEEK AND HAVE THEIR HEAD DOWN, AND HAVE A REALLY GOOD TIME.

>> HAS ANYONE EVER ASKED FOR THEIR MONEY BACK?

>> NOT YET.

>> NO.

>> YOU'RE BATTING 1,000.

>> I THINK WE'RE BATTING A THOUSAND.

>> YES.

>> NICE. DENNIS, I READ A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU THAT I DID NOT, I WASN'T AWARE OF BEFORE I DUG INTO YOUR MUSICAL CAREER. THIRD COUSIN OF GENE AUTRY.

>> YES.

>> THAT'S AMAZING.

>> WHAT WAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP, DID YOU KNOW EACH OTHER GROWING UP? OR WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP?

>> MY GRAPH -- MY GRANDFATHER AND HIM WERE FIRST COUSINS AND BORN BASICALLY ON THE RESERVATION IN OKLAHOMA. AND MY DAD WAS A SECOND COUSIN. AND THEN I DID MEET GENE, THE OPENING OF WYATT EARP, I GOT SOME ANGEL TICKETS, AND HE WAS REALLY GREAT, AND YOU KNOW, HE WROTE RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER. AND FROSTY THE SNOWMAN. AND STILL DOING IT. INCREDIBLE. INCREDIBLE SONG WRITER.

>> I FEEL LIKE YOU ALWAYS HEAR, WHEN PEOPLE GET FAMOUS, THEY SAY THEIR COUSINS COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK, WAS THAT SORT OF YOUR, WAS THAT YOUR CLAIM TO FAME WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER, THAT GENE AUTRY WAS YOUR THIRD COUSIN?

>> OUT OF THE WOODWORK FOR HIM, YES. A LITTLE LATE.

>> DENNIS, I WANT TO ASK YOU, QUICKLY ABOUT, YOUR ACTING CAREER, JUST A GENERAL QUESTION, YOU'VE DONE SO MANY GREAT ROLES OVER THE YEARS. WHAT THESE DAYS ARE THE MOVIES, THE TELEVISION SHOWS, THAT PEOPLE COME UP TO YOU AND WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE MOST?

>> FORTITUDE. WHICH IS LIKE ACTUALLY, IT IS AN AMAZON, YOU KNOW, WE SHOT IT BASICALLY AT THE NORTH POLE THIS LAST YEAR. AND THAT'S THE THING THAT IS GOING TO BE COMING OUT, THE SOONEST. AND I STARTED TO DO BILLY BOB'S SERIES ON AMAZON AS WELL, CALLED GOLIATH. IT IS WORK WITH HIM AGAIN. HE AND I WORKED TOGETHER IN THE ALAMO. ALTHOUGH WE HAD NO SCENES TOGETHER, BECAUSE HE WAS DAVY CROCKETT AND I WAS SAM HOUSTON, AND HE WAS STUCK IN THE AL BOW. HE DIDN'T MAKE IT. HE DIDN'T MAKE THE APPOINTMENT. THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT. SO WE'RE GOING HAVE A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS.

>> AND JAMIE, TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT, WHAT SUR FAVORITE DENNIS QUAID ROLE?

>> WHAT IS IT?

>> MY FAVORITE DENNIS QUAID ROLE, AS A DAD, NO SERIOUSLY, I WATCHED DENNIS, WHEN I FIRST MET DENNIS, HIS SON JACK WAS DENNIS, AND IN FACT, JACK NAMED THE BAND THE SHARKS. TELL THEM THAT STORY. THAT IS A GOOD STORY.

>> WE WERE AT PRACTICE AND WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO NAME OURSELVES. HE WAS NINE AT THE TIME. HE IS 26 NOW. HIS PICTURE IS ON THE WALL UP THERE, MAN. SO HE WAS NINE. AND WE SAID JACK, WHAT SHOULD WE NAME IT? AND HE SAID THE SHARKS. THE THING WAS, IT WAS SHARK WEEK ON TV, YOU KNOW. IS.

>> SHARKS WERE ON HIS MIND.

>> AND THANK GOD IT WASN'T DINOSAUR WEEK.

>> WELL, HE HAS FOLLOWED INTO THE FAMILY BUSINESS. WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE TO WATCH HIM BLOSSOM AS AN ACTOR?

>> I'M SO PROUD OF HIM, YOU KNOW. WHEN HE STARTED, HE WENT TO NYU HERE, DRAMA SCHOOL, AND HE STARTED LIKE IN HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA, AND YOU KNOW, HE WAS THE SON OF ME, AND HIS MOTHER'S MEG RYAN, SO HE WAS JUST ALWAYS GOING, NOBODY PUSHED HIM ANYWHERE, HE WAS JUST LIKE, THAT SEEMED NATURAL. BUT YES, BUT ANYWAY, YOU KNOW, HE OFFERED, BECAUSE MY AGENT HAS BEEN BUGGING ME JUST ABOUT ALL HIS LIFE, I WOULD LIKE TO REPRESENT HIM WHEN HE GROWS UP, YOU KNOW. AND HE SAID NO, I WANT TO GET MY, I WANT TO GET MYSELF, I WANT TO GET MY OWN, SO HE WENT OUT AND GOT HIS OWN AGENT AND HIS FIRST MOVIE IS LIKE HUNGER GAMES.

>> HUNGER GAMES.

>> AND HE CAME WITH THAT, AND THE NEXT JOB DOING VINYL WORKING WITH MARTIN SCORSESE, AND HERE, SO I'M LIKE, HEY, HOW ABOUT A LITTLE HELP FOR MYSELF? PROUD OF THAT.

>> YOU TOLD HIM AS A FATHER, YOU ALWAYS TOLD HIM, WE WOULD HANG OUT A LOT AND I WOULD GO OVER AND SEE JACK'S PLAYS AND THAT'S KIND OF WHEN HE BLOSSOMED, WHEN HE STARTED DOING THOSE PLAY, CROSS ROAD, HE REALLY BLOSSOMED AND DENNIS WOULD ALWAYS TELL HIM, YOU'RE YOUR OWN MAN, FROM A LITTLE, FROM WHEN HE WAS LITTLE, DENNIS WOULD SAY MANY TIMES, YOU'RE YOUR OWN MAN, JACK. YOU'RE YOUR OWN PERSON. AND HE'S GOT SUCH IMPECCABLE TIMING. YOU KNOW, HIS HUMOR IS THERE. YOU KNOW, HE IS SUCH A NATURAL WITH HIS HUMOR. AND HE'S A GREAT TALENT. I THINK HE IS GOING TO HAVE JUST A WONDERFUL FUTURE. AND LIKE I SAID, MY FAVORITE ROLE OF DENNIS IS DAD. AND SEEING WHAT IS GOING ON WITH HIS KIDS NOW, IT IS JUST INCREDIBLE. FANTASTIC.

>> AND DOES HE HAVE THE MUSIC IN HIM AS WELL?

>> OH, YES.

>> YES, HE DOES.

>> HE TOOK GUITAR LESSONS FROM JAMIE AS A KID.

>> HE DID A SHOW AT HIS SCHOOL AND HE SANG ALL OF THE, YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE, WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TEN YEARS OLD, I'VE BEEN TO RENO, CHICAGO, TULSA, OKLAHOMA, TAMPA, PANAMA, BANGOR, SALVADORE, I'M A KILLER. HE DID. TEN YEARS OLD. PEOPLE WERE GOING NUTS.

>> AND YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO GET A PERFORMANCE TODAY. THAT WAS GREAT. KEEP IT UP.

>> ALL RIGHT, WE ARE GOING TO --

>> OH, SHUCKS.

>> WELL, WE ARE GOING TO OPEN IT UP TO A FEW, DO WE HAVE SOME AUDIENCE MEMBER Q&A? YES, ALL RIGHT. WHO IS UP FIRST? HI.

>> HI.

>> WHAT'S YOUR NAME?

>> I'M JACOB.

>> NICE TO MEET YOU.

>> SO I'M WONDERING IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY DREAM COLLABORATIONS THAT YOU WOULD MAYBE LIKE TO WORK WITH ANYONE IN THE FUTURE, BASICALLY?

>> WELL, THE ONE WITH THE DOORS, THAT WAS BIG ON STAGE, THAT WAS SOMETHING ELSE AND WE OPENED FOR ZZ TOP, THAT WAS A SUMMER GO. AND BO DIDDLEY. REMEMBER THAT?

>> THAT WAS REALLY A LOT OF FUN. YES, I WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH TUPAC BUT HE AIN'T HERE, YOU KNOW. HE WAS REALLY SOMETHING ELSE.

>> SNOOP DOG, THAT WOULD BE FUN.

>> I WOULD LIKE, YOU KNOW, THERE'S, I DON'T SEE GENRES OR CULTURES, AS A BOUNDARY, AS ANY KIND OF BOUNDARIES AROUND HERE, IT IS ALL ABOUT BREAKING ALL OF THAT STUFF UP, YOU KNOW. ROCK AND ROLL IS, YOU KNOW, LIKE YOU SAID, WE'RE GOING TO BE THE OLDEST GUYS TO MAKE IT IN ROCK AND ROLL, BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN, EVER SINCE RUN DMC.

>> -- WALK THIS WAY.

>> WALK THIS WAY.

>> THAT'S KIND OF BEEN THE WAY IT HAS BEEN.

>> I LOVE THE IDEA OF YOU GUYS COLLABORATING WITH SNOOP DOGS. I WILL TWEET AT HIM WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE. PLEASE LET IT HAPPEN.

>> PEACHES. PEACHES NUMBER 11.

>> GIN AND JUICE. MAN. WE OUGHT TO DO GIN AND JUICE WITH HIM.

>> THAT OUGHT TO BE GOOD.

>> NICE.

>> A COUPLE MORE QUESTIONS. HELLO.

>> HI. HOW ARE YOU?

>> HI, WHAT'S YOUR NAME?

>> MY NAME TONDA.

>> I LOVED YOU IN YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE TEARS. HOW, WITH YOU BEING SUCH A STRONG BELIEVER THAT YOU ARE, HOW DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL TO PLAY A NONBELIEVER IN THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE, AND DID IT CHANGE YOU TO BE FEELING A LITTLE BIT STRONGER ABOUT FATHER GOD IN THE END?

>> THAT'S JUST PART OF LIFE, ISN'T IT? I MEAN DOUBT. AND YOU GO THROUGH ALL KINDS OF STAGES IN LIFE, TOO. AND I CERTAINLY DID. AND YOU KNOW, IT IS JUST A PERSON WHO WAS TRAPPED INSIDE, TRAPPED IN THE LIFE HE WAS LEADING, LIVING, AND HE HAD TO THINK OUT OF THE BOX HIMSELF. ACTUALLY, THE BOX HAD TO THROW HIM OUT. THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED. AND SO IT WAS QUITE A ROLE TO PLAY. EVEN MORE THAN THAT, IT WAS ABOUT, IT WAS CHILD ABUSE, IF YOU REALLY GET DOWN STRAIGHT TO IT, AND BART WAS THERE EVERY DAY, ON THE SET, YOU KNOW, WATCHING HIS LIFE, AND THAT WAS A TOUGH PART, WHO HE WAS. CERTAINLY NOT THAT KIND OF DAD, BUT IT REALLY CAME FROM PAIN FROM HIM. AND WHAT WAS SO GREAT ABOUT THE ROLE, THE REASON I DID IT, IS BECAUSE THIS IS A PERSON WHO WAS REDEEMED. WHO REALIZED THAT IT WAS, WHAT HE WAS LOOKING FOR, WAS FOR FREE, MORE THAN ANYTHING HAD TO BE EARNED.

>> AMEN. AMEN. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANKS FOR THE QUESTION. ALL RIGHT. LAST ONE. HELLO. SO THIS IS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE AN ONLINE QUESTION SUBMITTED TO OUR WEB SITE. DAVE WANTS TO KNOW WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATOR?

>> WELL, YOU KNOW, I GOT THAT WITH JAMIE, AND IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE ANYTHING FOR HIM WITHOUT HIM BEING HERE, JAMIE, YOU KNOW, WE ARE SO, LIKE HE SAID, HE GREW UP IN TORONTO AND I GREW UP LIKE IN TEXAS, BUT WE WERE JUST SO, WE'RE LIVING THE DREAM.

>> MUSICALLY.

>> WE'RE REALLY LIVING THE DREAM COLLABORATION. REALLY, TRULY. NO LIE ABOUT IT.

>> ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU GUYS FOR COMING IN TODAY. DENNIS, JAMIE, THANK YOU GUYS FOR BEING HERE TODAY. GUYS, CHECK OUT "OUT OF THE BOX” IN STORES, EVERYWHERE NOW. IT'S OUT THERE. GET IT.

>> ANYWHERE YOU CAN BUY MUSIC. RIGHT THERE ON YOUR PHONE.

>> WE'RE AT TARGET. WE'RE EVERYWHERE YOU ARE.

>> THANK YOU GUYS. WE WILL SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.
