Diego Luna Talks "Narcos: Mexico" & "If Beale Street Could Talk"

Diego Luno joined BUILD to talk about his role in Netflix's "Narcos: Mexico" and the new film, "If Beale Street Could Talk." "Narcos: Mexico" explores the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers. In "If Beale Street Could Talk," a woman in Harlem desperately scrambles to prove her fiancé innocent of a crime while carrying their first child.

>>> ALL RIGHT, HEY, GUYS, KEVIN POLOWY HERE FROM YAHOO! ENTERTAINMENT. GLAD TO BE BACK IN NYC FOR ANOTHER SPIN WITH BUILD SERIES, MY FAVORITE OF ALL SERIES. WE FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH OUR NEXT GUEST IN THE SENSATIONAL 2001 EXPORT AND HE'S BEEN IN FILMED SUCH AS "FRIDA," MILK” AND "ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.” NOW HE'S IN NETFLIX'S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED "NARCOS: MEXICO" AND WILL BE BACK AS AN OSCAR CONTENDER IN "IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK.” FIRST, HERE'S A LOOK AT HIS WORK IN "NARCOS: MEXICO.” [ SPEAKING SPANISH ]

>> WHO IS THAT GUY?

>> THE ROCKEFELLER OF MARIJUANA.

>> ARE YOU GOING TO BUST HIS ASS?

>> UH-HUH. \M\M [ SPEAKING SPANISH ]

>> BIG MONEY ON THE TRIBE. \M GET HIGHER BABY GET HIGHER GIRL GET HIGHER BABY GET HIGHER GIRL \M [ SPEAKING SPANISH ]

>> ALL RIGHT, GIVE IT UP, DIEGO LUNA IS IN THE BUILDING!

>> HOW ARE YOU? THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I'M HAPPY TO BE HERE.

>> WHAT IS GOING ON, MAN? GOOD TO SEE YOU.

>> GOOD TO SEE YOU. I GUESS WE KNOW EACH OTHER FOR MANY YEARS NOW.

>> FROM WAY BACK. "DIRTY DANCING," "HAVANA NIGHTS.” [ LAUGHTER ] YEAH, YEAH.

>> WE WILL AVOID TALKING ABOUT "HAVANA NIGHTS.”

>> DON'T WANT TO GO THERE TODAY? CONGRATS ON THIS SHOW. THIS SERIES CONTINUES TO BE SO GOOD. THIS IS THE FOURTH SEASON WE'VE SEEN NOW. WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP TO THE FIRST THREE SEASONS BUT IT IS GRITTY. IT IS INTENSE, IT IS ELECTRIFYING AT TIMES. IT'S TERRIFYING AT TIMES. I LOVE THE DOCUDRAMA TO IT ALL. IT'S ENTERTAINING, EDUCATIONAL YOU CAN SAY. THE FIRST THREE SEASONS OF "NARCOS," BIG HIT FOR NETFLIX. "NARCOS: MEXICO" SEEMS TO BE FOLLOWING IN THAT PATH, CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS INSTALLMENT? I HEARD IT DESCRIBED A FEW DIFFERENT WAYS.

>> I THINK IT IS A DIFFERENT SERIES -- IT RUNS PARALLEL TO THE OTHER STORY SO IT COMPLEMENTS WELL BUT IT'S DIFFERENT NOT JUST IT'S A DIFFERENT CAST AND DIFFERENT COUNTRY, BUT THE ISSUES WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ARE MUCH MORE PERTINENT TODAY. THE ESCOBAR STORY, PEOPLE KNEW THE CHARACTER. THERE WERE DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT THE GUY. THERE WERE FILMS. THE CHARACTER HAD BEEN IN OTHER PROJECTS, TV PROJECTS. THERE WAS TELENOVELAS ABOUT HIM. THERE WAS A LOT OF CONTENT ABOUT HIM. I DON'T THINK KNOW THIS TIME ABOUT THE MEXICAN HISTORY. I DON'T THINK PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN THE '80s THAT CREATED THE MESS WE'RE LIVING IN TODAY. AND BECAUSE WE ARE LIVING IN THIS MESS AND BECAUSE THIS COUNTRY IS SO CLOSE TO THE MESS AND SO MUCH PART OF IT, THIS IS VERY RELEVANT TODAY. IT SEEMS TO BE CAUSING OUR ISSUES, YOU KNOW, OUR REALITY. AND I THINK THAT PROXIMITY WITH THE WORLD WE LIVE IN MAKES THIS YEAR'S REALLY POWERFUL FOR AUDIENCES. FOR THOSE WHO LIVE REALLY CLOSE TO THIS ISSUE MEANS SOMETHING, FOR THOSE WHO LIVE FAR AWAY AND THINK THEY HAVE NO CONNECTION WITH IT ALSO MEANS SOMETHING ELSE. IT REMINDS US THAT THIS IS A GLOBAL ISSUE WE’RE LIVING, WHERE, YES, WE HAPPEN TO BE IN THE WORST PLACE. WE HAPPEN TO BE THE BIG DOOR BETWEEN THE FIRST WORLD AND COUNTRIES IN DEVELOPMENT, AND I'M TALKING ABOUT MEXICO, BUT THE ISSUE BELONGS TO EVERYONE. IT'S NOT THE MEXICAN VIOLENCE. IT'S THE VIOLENCE OF A SYSTEM THAT IS GLOBAL. AND THAT NEEDS A MARKET OUT OF MEXICO, YOU KNOW.

>> AS WE HEAR IN THE NARRATION, IN THE PILOT EPISODE, I THINK 30 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN THIS --

>> NO, NO, THAT WOULD BE -- THAT'S A LITTLE TOO MUCH SINCE THEN UNTIL TODAY, IT'S BEEN MORE THAN HALF A MILLION.

>> I WAS WAY OFF THERE. NOT SURE WHERE I GOT THAT NUMBER. I'M NOT VERY GOOD WITH NUMBERS.

>> SUCH A DANGEROUS MAN.

>> STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE. HALF A MILLION OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS.

>> YEAH. THE LAST 12 YEARS WHEN THE GOVERNMENT DECIDED TO FRONTALLY GO TO WAR WITH THE DRUG TRAFFICKERS, IT'S BEEN MORE THAN 250,000 PEOPLE IN 12 YEARS. SO THOSE NUMBERS ARE HUGE, YOU KNOW. THE AMERICAN LOSSES IN VIETNAM WERE MUCH LESS AND IT'S A GIGANTIC MOMENT IN HISTORY THAT MARKED THIS COUNTRY ON EVERYONE. YOU STUDY IT, AND LIKE THIS ISSUE WE'RE LIVING IS BIGGER THAN WHAT EVERYONE THINKS, YOU KNOW. AND WE CANNOT -- WE CANNOT GET USED TO THESE LEVELS OF VIOLENCE. WE CANNOT ACCEPT THIS IS OKAY. THIS IS NORMAL. AND I THINK A SERIES LIKE THIS GENERATES THE RIGHT DEBATE, BRINGS PEOPLE'S ATTENTION TO THE THINGS THAT ARE REALLY IMPORTANT IN OTHER COUNTRIES. SO I'M GLAD "NARCOS" IS OUT, I'M GLAD I'M PART OF THIS PROJECT, AND I'M GLAD IT HAS THIS POPULARITY AROUND THE WORLD. WE WENT TO PLACES I DIDN'T THINK THEY CARED ABOUT OUR SITUATION, AND THEY DO. I WENT TO INDIA, I WENT TO SINGAPORE, I WENT TO EUROPE WITH THE PROJECT AND TALKING TO THE PRESS OVER THERE, THE ISSUES THAT ARE HAPPENING TODAY IN MEXICO MATTER. AND I'M SO GLAD BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY WAY OUT THROUGH THIS MADNESS.

>> GETTING BACK TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS SEASON FOUR OF "NARCOS: MEXICO" AND THE FIRST THREE SEASONS, I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SERIES EVEN IN THE FIRST THREE SEASONS WOULD REINVENT ITSELF WITH EVERY SEASON. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS SEASON MOST DEPARTS FROM THOSE PREVIOUS ONES?

>> I THINK THERE'S TWO THINGS. ONE IS THEY ARE VERY BOLD IN ACTUALLY SAYING GOOD-BYE TO CHARACTERS THAT PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, GOT HOOKED TO, THAT PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT, AND THEY'RE WILLING TO GO, THIS IS IT. NOW WE'RE MOVING TO THIS OTHER AREA OF THE SAME ISSUE. NOW WE'RE GOING TO THIS OTHER ONE. AND I THINK THAT'S VERY BRAVE, AND IT IS VERY SMART BECAUSE IT HAS A CHANCE TO LIVE FOREVER, YOU KNOW. IT'S UNTIL WE FIX THIS ISSUE THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE A SOLUTION, SO THERE WILL BE MATERIAL, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN SEE THE SAME ISSUE FROM MANY DIFFERENT ANGLES, YOU KNOW. GOING TO THE MEXICAN ANGLE, I THINK IT'S UNIQUE BECAUSE WHAT HAPPENED THERE IS LIKE, IT'S NOT THE STEREOTYPICAL DRUG DEALER, YOU KNOW, THAT WE KNOW THAT IS LIKE A RANCHER AND THEY JUST GROW IN WEALTH, VERY -- VERY PROUD OF WHERE THEY BELONG TO. THIS KIND OF IDEA THEY GO AND BUILD THE MOST HORRIBLE HOUSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLAZA IN THE LITTLE TOWN TO SHOW THAT WEALTH HAS COME AND THEN, YOU KNOW, HELP THE TOWN AND FIX THE CHURCH AND THE SCHOOLS AND, NO, THESE GUYS WERE BUSINESSMEN. THEY THOUGHT OF THE BUSINESS, AND THEY WERE WILLING TO -- TO LEAVE THEIR TOWNS BEHIND. YOU KNOW, THE CARTEL OF GUADALAJARA. I'M NOT GOING TO SPOIL THE SERIES IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED IT, BUT IT HAPPENS IN GUADALAJARA, WHICH WAS ONE OF THE MAJOR CITIES IN MEXICO. THEY MOVE TO GUATEMALA TO -- THERE TO BUILD THIS EMPIRE. AND A VERY SOPHISTICATED MAN CONSIDERING WHERE HE COMES FROM, AND HE JUST WANTS TO BE PART OF THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, OF THE PEOPLE IN POWER IN MEXICO. HE WANTS TO BE THERE SITTING NEXT TO THE POLITICIANS AND THE GREATEST BUSINESSMAN RUNNING THIS BUSINESS THAT, YOU KNOW, HAPPENS TO BE FEEDING THE MARKET IN THE STATES. SO IT'S INTERESTING TO SEE THESE CHARACTERS BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT SIMILAR TO ANY OF THE ONES YOU HAVE SEEN IN PREVIOUS SEASONS. AND THAT MAKES THE WHOLE ANGLE INTERESTING BECAUSE YOU GO LIKE OKAY, NOW I GET IT. NOW I GET WHY THESE GROW SO FAST.

>> LET'S TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT FELIX. HOW MUCH DID YOU KNOW ABOUT HIM GROWING UP IN MEXICO?

>> I KNEW VERY LITTLE I REALIZED WHEN I STARTED DOING THE RESEARCH FOR THE SHOW. I WAS BORN IN '79, AND SO THIS HAPPENS IN THE '80s. I WAS THERE, I REMEMBER --

>> GREAT YEAR TO BE BORN IN, BY THE WAY.

>> AMAZING, RIGHT?

>> BEST YEAR TO BE BORN IN.

>> I COMPLETELY AGREE. WE DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE '70s TO SAY WE'RE FROM THE '70s, WHICH IS MUCH COOLER THAN SAYING WE'RE FROM THE '80s.

>> VERY BRIEFLY SAMPLED IT.

>> THE IDEA IS I WAS THERE AS A KID WITNESSING THIS MEXICO, BUT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A KID, AND I WENT BACK TO DO THE RESEARCH, AND I REALIZED HOLY SHIT, I WAS MISSING ALL OF THIS. WHEN VIOLENCE IS STARTING ERUPTING AND I REMEMBER THAT TRANSITION, THAT SOCIAL TRANSITION WE ALL HAD TO GO THROUGH FROM ACTUALLY FEARING BEING OUTSIDE, YOU KNOW. AND FEARING STUFF THAT WE COP THE CONTROL OR PREDICT HAPPENING BECAUSE THERE WAS A BATTLE HAPPENING BETWEEN THESE CARTELS IN MEXICO. BUT I DIDN'T KNOW HOW COMPLEX THE WHOLE THING WAS. HOW MUCH INVOLVED WERE ALL LEVELS OF POWER IN MEXICO. FOR THESE TWO OPERATE LIKE THAT, IT WAS THE PERFECT MACHINE. SO YOU NEEDED, YES, THE GOVERNMENT, THE POLICE, THE MILITARY, YOU NEEDED INVOLVEMENT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER TO MAKE IT WORK. SO CORRUPTION GOT TO EVERYONE. IT WAS A SYSTEM THAT WAS MAKING MANY PEOPLE REACH, AND -- AND IT WAS INSANE TO THINK THAT JUST A DRUG DEALER COULD BE DOING THIS. AND I BELIEVE THAT FOR MANY YEARS. I BELIEVE THE STATE WAS A VICTIM, YOU KNOW, AND THROUGH THE PROCESS OF DOING THE RESEARCH, I REALIZED THAT THE STATE WAS -- IT WAS THE CRIMINAL TOO. AND THAT TODAY THEY CONVINCED US THEY PUT IN JAIL THOSE WERE THE CRIMINALS THAT HAVE TO BE IN JAIL, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY OUT THERE WEARING SUITS AND MAKING DECISIONS.

>> IT'S SYSTEMIC IN A LOT OF WAYS AND AT THIS POINT UNFORTUNATELY INHERENT.

>> AND ALSO THERE'S A MARKET. WE ALWAYS ANALYZE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF TRAFFICKING, AND WE HAVE TO THINK OF THIS AS A HEALTH ISSUE. I MEAN, ADDICTIONS ARE GOING TO MAKE THESE A NONSTOP PROBLEM, YOU KNOW, NO MATTER HOW MANY DRUG DEALERS YOU CATCH. IF THERE'S A MARKET, SOMEONE WILL BE PROVIDING, YOU KNOW.

>> AND, OF COURSE, FELIX ULTIMATELY WOULD GO ON TO BECOME -- I THINK HE'S CONSIDERED THE FIRST MAJOR HEAD OF A MEXICAN CARTEL, CALLED THE GODFATHER EL PEDRINO.

>> SO MANY TITLES FOR ONE MAN, INCREDIBLE. HE DID ONE THING, PEOPLE DIDN'T THINK MEXICANS COULD ORGANIZE THAT WELL. AND THAT'S WHAT GAVE THEM THE ADVANTAGE OF COMING OUT OF NOWHERE, YOU KNOW. IN THE SERIES YOU SEE IT, EVEN THE DEA AT THE VERY BEGINNING IS SAYING NO, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING. THIS IS JUST A COINCIDENCE. SUDDENLY, BOOM, THE SYSTEM WAS BUILT. A GUY SAT AT THE SAME TABLE, PEOPLE THAT WANTED TO KILL EACH OTHER, AND MAKE THEM WORK TOGETHER AND PROTECT EACH OTHER AND BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER, WHERE THE ORGANIZATION WAS BIGGER THAN ANY MAN. AND THAT -- THAT IS A PERFECT CORPORATION, YOU KNOW. IF THE GUYS WHO HAD THE IDEA OR THE OWNER CAN GUY AND THE THING STILLS RUN, THEN IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT TO END THIS MADNESS AGAIN.

>> OBVIOUSLY LIKE ANY KINGPIN, LIKE ESCOBAR, DOES HIS FAIR SHARE OF NAUGHTY THINGS. HE WOULD DEFINITELY BE ON SANTA'S NAUGHTY LIST I GUESS YOU WOULD SAY. IS THAT AN ODD CHALLENGE TO HUMANIZE A CHARACTER LIKE FELIX KNOWING WHAT HE WAS CAPABLE OF?

>> THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT GOT ME INTO THE PROJECT, THE EXCITEMENT OF ACTUALLY BRINGING A THREE-DIMENSIONAL CHARACTER IN SOMEONE THAT IS -- THAT SOUNDS SO EVIL, YOU KNOW. AND, YES, AS PART OF THE AUDIENCE, I DID READ THE WHOLE THING AND I WAS VERY, VERY CRITICAL ABOUT LIKE THE NEED OF A SERIES LIKE THIS. I SAID, OKAY, I THINK WE WANT TO TELL THE SAME STORY. I THINK WE DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT GOOD AND BAD AND BLACK AND WHITE, WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. BUT THEN AS AN ACTOR, YOU CANNOT JUDGE. AS AN ACTOR, YOU'RE THERE TO UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTER AND THE DECISIONS THE CHARACTER MAKES. AND IN FACT YOU HAVE TO FORGET ABOUT, YOU KNOW, YOUR OWN MORAL STANDARDS, YOU KNOW. THESE GUYS ACTED THE SAME WAY WE ACT, IT'S THE SAME THINGS MOVING EVERY HUMAN BEING -- LOVE, HATE, JEALOUSY, AMBITION, REGRET. ALL OF THAT GUILT IS THERE. AND THESE GUYS HAVE FAMILIES AND THEY EAT AND THEY SLEEP OR NOT SLEEP AND THAT AFFECTS THEM. YOU HAVE TO JUST APPROACH IT AS IF HE WAS JUST ANOTHER GUY. HIS BUSINESS HAPPENS TO BE THIS BUSINESS BUT IN HIS HEAD LIKE EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE. HE COULD BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN TO YOU WHY HE'S DOING WHAT HE'S DOING AND WHY HE THINKS IT'S OKAY.

>> AND WE REALLY SEE THE FULL TRAJECTORY OF HIS ARC. THE WAY THAT THE PILOT EPISODE OPENS, THIS IS A GUY WHO IS HUMANIZED FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. HE'S A GUY WHO CARES ABOUT THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN HIS COMMUNITY, ABOUT HIS COUSIN. THE WAY HE'S INITIALLY INTRODUCED TO YOU, FOR A SECOND YOU'RE LIKE IS THIS ROBIN HOOD? HE HAS A LOT OF THE SAME TRAITS. OF COURSE, WE'RE GOING TO SEE WHERE HE GOES. ENTER A GUY NAMED KIKE, PLAYED BY THE GREAT MICHAEL PENA, LARGELY KNOWN FOR COMEDY BUT SERIOUS, SERIOUS DRAMATIC CHOPS ON THIS GUY. HE PUTS THOSE ON FULL DISPLAY. HE'S GOING TO BE HOT ON YOUR TRAIL THROUGHOUT THE SERIES. IF YOU KNOW THE ACTUAL STORY, YOU KNOW IT GETS VERY, VERY REAL BETWEEN THESE TWO. BUT, YOU KNOW, EVEN THOUGH YOU GUYS DON'T SHARE A TON OF SCENES TOGETHER, WHAT WAS THAT SORT OF DYNAMIC LIKE BETWEEN YOU TWO? DID YOU SORT OF KEEP YOUR DISTANCE WHEN YOU WERE ON SET TOGETHER?

>> I DON'T TALK TO THE GUY AT ALL. [ LAUGHTER ]

>> YOU HATE EACH OTHER. THAT'S WHAT WE WANT TO HEAR.

>> NO, HE'S AMAZING. WE DID A FILM TOGETHER, AND HE PLAYED CESAR CHAVEZ. THE BOND IS QUITE SPECIAL. WE KNOW EACH OTHER. WE WENT THROUGH AN EXPERIENCE. THAT FILM WAS QUITE AN EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH OF US. VERY DIFFICULT TO DO AND VERY PERSONAL, VERY PERSONAL STORY TO TELL. AND FOR HIM AS A MEXICAN-AMERICAN FOR HIS GENERATION, REALLY IMPORTANT CHARACTER. FOR ME THE STORY REALLY IMPORTANT. SO WE HAD THAT CONNECTION ALREADY. IN FACT, IT WAS KIND OF PAINFUL BECAUSE IN THIS PROCESS, WE NEVER GOT TO SEE EACH OTHER. WE HAVE LIKE THREE, FOUR SCENES TOGETHER THROUGH THE WHOLE SHOW. SO IT WAS LIKE SEVEN MONTHS OF SHOOTING AND EVERY TIME I WAS, YOU KNOW, FREE AND AVAILABLE, HE WAS WORKING AND THE OTHER WAY AROUND. SO IT WAS INTERESTING BECAUSE I THINK IT BROUGHT KIND OF LIKE SOME WEIRD AND INTERESTING ENERGY, YOU KNOW. EVERY TIME WE SAW EACH OTHER, THERE WAS LIKE SOMETHING ELSE HAPPENING BECAUSE, YEAH, THEY KEPT US APART. AND NOW WE'VE BEEN TRAVELING, PROMOTING THE SHOW AND IT'S BEEN AMAZING. I REALLY LIKE THE GUY. I THINK HE DID A TERRIFIC JOB. HE HAD A VERY DIFFICULT ROLE TO PLAY. ALSO TO BRING THREE DIMENSIONS TO THIS ROLE, NOT JUST MAKE THE GOOD GUY, YOU KNOW, THE VERY GOOD GUY THAT IS THERE FOR THE RIGHT REASONS IN A WORLD OF MONSTERS. NO, HE ACTUALLY BROUGHT SOME DEPTH AND SOME DARKNESS TO HIS CHARACTER TOO THAT YOU SEE THERE. SOME FRUSTRATION THAT KIND OF LIKE TAKES HIM SOMETIMES IN LIKE -- YEAH, HE LIVES IN THAT AGE, YOU KNOW, WHERE I THINK INTERESTING CHARACTERS HAVE TO LIVE ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, WHERE YOU DON'T KNOW IF THEY'RE GOING TO CROSS THAT LINE YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO CROSS. AND THAT MAKES IT INTERESTING TO WATCH, YOU KNOW. I THINK THE WHOLE CAST OF THIS SEASON IS VERY SPECIAL ALSO. AND IT'S PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE REALITY. LIKE, YEAH, I WOULD SAY THE OLD STAR TEAM OF MEXICAN ACTORS, YOU KNOW, IT'S THE BEST OF THE BEST FROM THEATER AND FROM FILM, WORKING ON A SHOW THAT HAS ROLES FOR EVERYONE ALSO, AND INTERESTING ROLES FOR EVERYONE. YOU WILL SEE REALLY INTERESTING ACTORS DOING CHARACTERS THAT YOU WANT TO -- THAT YOU WANT TO LIVE WITH, YOU KNOW. I MEAN, WITH THE SAFETY OF BEING -- WATCHING THEM THROUGH A SCREEN BUT YOU WANT -- YOU WANT TO WITNESS WHAT THEY'RE GOING THROUGH AND THEY'RE INTERESTING TO WATCH AND THEY'RE FULL OF LIKE -- THERE'S A LOT OF ATTENTION IN DETAIL I THINK IN THIS SERIES IN THE ACTING, IN THE PORTRAYING OF THIS REALITY AND THIS CONTEXT THAT IS SO SPECIFIC, AND THAT IT HASN'T BEEN SHOWN ON TV, YOU KNOW.

>> I DEFINITELY WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE TOPICALITY OF IT ALL. I THINK LIKE ALL GREAT DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT THAT THIS SERIES FEELS TOPICAL AS HELL. DO YOU THINK THESE DAYS, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THIS SERIES IS TRAVELING TO THE U.S., IT'S TRAVELING INTERNATIONALLY, DO YOU THINK THERE'S A GREATER RESPONSIBILITY ON BEHALF OF FILM AND TELEVISION CREATORS WHEN IT COMES TO PORTRAYAL OF MEXICANS GIVEN WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE U.S. BORDER RIGHT NOW, GIVEN ALL OF THE DANGEROUS RHETORIC THAT'S BEING TALKED ABOUT BY POLITICIANS?

>> DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY. I THINK EVERYONE WHO HAS A CHANCE TO TELL A STORY, EVERYONE WHO IS A STORYTELLER HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TODAY. THE STORY WE'RE TELLING ARE THE STORIES THAT ARE CONNECTING EACH OTHER, YOU KNOW. SOMEHOW -- I THINK IT'S TELEVISION AND ALL OF THESE NEW PLATFORMS THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO REACH A GIGANTIC AUDIENCE IN A SECOND. AND THEN THE TOOLS WE HAVE TODAY TO HAVE AN INTERACTION. WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE STORY WE TELL MATTERS, YOU KNOW. I WAS RECENTLY ON A PANEL ABOUT INCLUSION, YOU KNOW, AND I WAS SAYING INCLUSION IS NOT HAVING ALWAYS AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN, A LATINO, A EUROPEAN, LIKE IN THE SAME FILMS WE'VE BEEN DOING FOREVER. IT'S NOT LIKE OKAY, BRING A LATINO, KILL HIM IN THE SECOND ACT, AND IT WILL BE GREAT. AND THEY'RE REPRESENTED. NO, THAT'S NOT WHAT REPRESENTATION MEANS OR INCLUSION MEANS. IT'S THE STORIES THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN TOLD THAT HAVE TO BE TOLD TODAY, YOU KNOW, THAT WE HAVE TO TELL TODAY. THE STORIES THAT APPARENTLY BEFORE NO ONE CARED ABOUT, TODAY THERE IS AN AUDIENCE FOR THAT. AND BY HEARING A VERY SPECIFIC STORY OF A VERY SPECIFIC COMMUNITY, YOU MIGHT LEARN A LOT ABOUT YOU, YOU KNOW. IT'S ABOUT THAT SPECIFICITY AND AUTHENTICITY. AND AUDIENCES I THINK ARE FIGHTING FOR THAT TODAY. THE SUCCESS OF "NARCOS" IS CLEARLY A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THAT, A SERIES THAT YOU HAVE 80% IS IN SPANISH, YOU KNOW. AND FOR YEARS I REMEMBER IN THIS COUNTRY THEY WOULD SAY PEOPLE WON'T READ SUBTITLES, YOU KNOW. IF YOU DO A SPANISH-SPEAKING FILM, YOUR NICHE IS THIS, THE PEOPLE WHO WILL LOOK AT THE FILM IS THIS, AND THERE'S NO WAY TO GET OUT OF THAT NICHE UNLESS YOU DO THE CROSSOVER, UNLESS YOU START SPEAKING ENGLISH. AND THEN A SHOW LIKE "NARCOS” TEACHES US THAT THAT'S NONSENSE TODAY. THAT'S COMPLETELY NOT TRUE.

>> AMEN. AND THIS IS A GREAT SEGUE TO YOUR NEXT PROJECT, SPEAKING OF REPRESENTATION, PORTRAYAL OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STRUGGLE IN 1970s NEW YORK CITY. I GOT TO TELL YOU, PROBABLY THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN ALL YEAR. "IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK.” BASED ON THE GREAT CLASSIC NOVEL BY JAMES BALDWIN, ADAPTED BY BARRY JENKINS. THIS MOVIE IS SOUL PIERCING, HEART BREAKING, IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. THE REVELATIONS IN THIS FILM.

>> AMAZING.

>> YOU'RE IN IT NOT LONG ENOUGH BUT YOU MAKE A MEMORABLE IMPRESSION.

>> YOU GET DISTRACTED, YOU MAY NOT EVEN SEE ME.

>> DON'T GO TO THE BATHROOM LIKE AROUND THE ONE-HOUR MARK. YOU WILL MISS PEDRO. BUT THIS WAS WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY BARRY JENKINS. FOR YOU, IS THIS A MOMENT -- I'M ASSUMING YOU HAVE SEEN "MOONLIGHT.” IS THIS A MOMENT YOU THOUGHT I GET TO WORK WITH CLEARLY ONE OF THE BEST DIRECTORS IN THE GAME RIGHT NOW?

>> YES, DEFINITELY. VERY YOUNG GUY. WHEN I REALIZE HIS AGE, I WAS A LITTLE LIKE --

>> IT MAKES YOU ANGRY, DOESN'T IT?

>> YEAH.

>> HOW MUCH HE ACCOMPLISHED.

>> YEAH, THE THING IS I LOVED HIS --

>> HE WAS BORN IN THE '80s, LIKE MID-'80s.

>> IT'S INSANE, AND HE SEEMS TO BE SUCH AN EXPERIENCED GUY WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT STORYTELLING. HE HAD VERY CLEAR IDEAS OF WHAT HE WANTED TO DO, HOW HE WANTED TO ACHIEVE IT AND HE TAKES A RISK NOT MANY DIRECTORS WILL TAKE EVER IN THEIR CAREERS. AND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT HIS AGE, YOU GO HOLY SHIT, YOU'RE WILLING TO TAKE THESE RISKS TODAY. IMAGINE WHERE HE'S GOING TO BE IN TEN YEARS? AND THE WAY HE DIRECTS ACTORS IS BEAUTIFUL. HE TAKES ALL OF THE PRESSURE OFF YOUR SHOULDERS. LIKE THERE'S THIS FEELING THAT EVERYTHING IS GOING TO GO FINE. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE YOU ARRIVE INTO I DON'T KNOW, SOME KIND OF RELIGIOUS CULT WHERE EVERYONE IS SO PEACEFUL AND CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING, AND THEY'RE SILENCED ON THE STAGE, NO ONE SHOUTS. IT'S BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE. I CAME BACK HOME AND I THOUGHT HOW DOES HE DO IT?

>> THAT PROBABLY EXPLAINS WHY HE GETS SUCH GREAT PERFORMANCES OUT OF EVERYONE HE WORKS WITH.

>> NOT JUST THE ACTORS, EVERYONE ON THE TEAM, THEY KNOW WHEN TO PARTICIPATE, WHEN NOT TO. NO ONE IS SHOWING UP TRYING TO GET BARRY'S ATTENTION BECAUSE BARRY HAS TIME FOR EVERYONE. HE HAS A LITTLE CHAT WITH EVERYONE TO LET THEM KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS. AND THAT KEEPS PEOPLE IN THEIR PLACE TO DO EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED TO DO SO THE THING WORKS OUT FINE. IT WAS QUITE INTERESTING TO SEE HIS PROCESS. I HAD A MEETING WITH HIM, I WAS SHOOTING ANOTHER PROJECT HERE IN NEW YORK AND I HAD A MEETING WITH HIM, AND HE SAID, I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN FEEL OFFENDED BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO PLAY THIS TINY ROLE. I GO LIKE, I'M -- I AM SITTING HERE BECAUSE I WISH THERE WAS A CHANCE TO WORK WITH YOU, YOU KNOW. DOING WHATEVER. BECAUSE DIRECTORS LIKE THAT, I WANT TO WITNESS THEIR PROCESS. I DIRECT ALSO, SO I ENJOY SO MUCH JUST SITTING DOWN AND ALL OF THE TIME ACTORS HAVE NOTHING TO DO ON SET AND JUST WATCHING SOMEONE DO HIS CRAFT LIKE HIM AND LEARNING FROM THAT. I WAS REALLY HAPPY. I ALSO WAS SHOOTING "NARCOS" SO I JUST HAD A DAY AND A HALF, SO IT WAS LIKE PERFECT.

>> IN BASICALLY THE SAME CHARACTER YOU PLAY IN BOTH.

>> EXACTLY.

>> VERY, VERY SIMILAR.

>> LAUGH A LITTLE BIT AND BE WARM AND JUST A NICE FRIEND TO ANOTHER GUY. AND BE SWEET, AND, YEAH.

>> WE'RE GOING TO OPEN IT UP TO THE AUDIENCE IN JUST ONE SECOND. I JUST WANT TO ASK YOU ONE OTHER THING, ONE OTHER SUBJECT VERY BRIEFLY, AS IF YOU WEREN'T KILLING IT ENOUGH, IT WAS JUST ANNOUNCED I THINK WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS YOU'RE GOING TO GET A "STAR WARS” SPIN-OFF OF YOUR OWN. [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ] I'M EXCITED TO ASK YOU ABOUT THIS BECAUSE I KNOW YOU CAN TELL ME EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

>> EVERYTHING.

>> JUST TELL US EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

>> YOU KNOW, AFTER I DID THE WHOLE PROMOTIONAL TOUR OF "ROGUE ONE," THEY REALIZED THEY CANNOT TELL ME ANYTHING. [ LAUGHTER ] THEY UNDERSTOOD OH, THESE GUYS HAVE TEQUILA AND START TELLING EVERYONE THE END. SO I KNOW NOTHING. I KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW. I CAN TELL YOU -- I CAN TELL YOU I'M REALLY HAPPY BECAUSE -- I EXPLAINED THIS -- THE FEELING LIKE THIS, I TOLD MY SON I WAS DOING A "STAR WARS" FILM, AND BECAME A HERO, YOU KNOW, FOR ALL THE TIME I WAS SHOOTING, HE CAME TO SET. HE SAW THE SETS, YOU KNOW. THEY LET HIM TRY THE WEAPONS. HE GOT INTO THE COCKPIT. HE WAS LIKE, THERE CAN'T BE A BETTER DAD THAN THAT, RIGHT?

>> YEAH, THAT'S A COOL DAD.

>> THAT'S A COOL DAD. AND THEN WE SAT DOWN TO WATCH THE FILM AND THE PREMIERE AND AT THE END HE JUST TURNS AND GOES, OH, YOU DIE. HUH. OKAY. OKAY. AND HE EXPERIENCED THAT PART AS IF IT WAS A FUNERAL, YOU KNOW, THE LAST TIME I'M GOING TO BE AROUND, THIS FEELING OF BEING THE SON OF A GUY WHO IS IN "STAR WARS" BECAUSE IN FACT HE'S NOT ANYMORE. HE'S DEAD. SO WHEN I BROUGHT THE NEWS HOME, IT'S LIKE -- IT'S NOT OVER, I BECAME, AGAIN, IN HIS TOP FIVE OF COOLEST PEOPLE, YOU KNOW. I'M VERY EXCITED ALSO TO GO BACK TO WORK WITH THE PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE BECAUSE IT WAS A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE. AND SO IMPORTANT FOR ME, LIKE THE UNIVERSE OF "STAR WARS” MEANS SO MUCH, SO MUCH. IT'S THE COOL THING OF BEING BORN IN THE '70s. I CAN SAY I WAS BORN IN THAT DECADE WHERE --

>> WHERE IT WAS ALL BORN.

>> YEAH. AND IT'S JUST SO NICE TO BE ABLE TO DO ALSO A JOB THAT I CAN SHARE WITH MY KIDS, YOU KNOW, BOTH OF THEM NOW BECAUSE NOW MY DAUGHTER IS INTO IT TOO, AND OBVIOUSLY WHEN I GO TO THE SET OF "NARCOS," I JUST LIE TO THEM. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? OH, YEAH, YOU KNOW, ANOTHER INTERVIEW. OH, MY GOD, THOSE INTERVIEWS.

>> PICKED UP AN OFFICE JOB, THAT'S ALL.

>> EVERY MORNING A NEW PROMOTION. I HAVE TO KEEP IT SECRET, YOU KNOW. THE PICTURES I TAKE ON SET, I CAN'T SHOW THEM AT HOME. THEY CAN NEVER COME VISIT ME ON SET. IT'S QUITE A PROBLEM. BUT THAT'S ABOUT TO BE OVER.

>> SO WE KNOW THIS SERIES IS A PREQUEL. WE HAVE ESTABLISHED THAT. THAT'S WHAT WE GOT OUT OF THIS. HE'S NOT DEAD. HE'S NOT A SPACE GHOST. NOT A SPACE GHOST. WE KNOW CASSIAN — HE'S WELL AND ALIVE.

>> THEY WERE CLEAR ABOUT THAT, WHICH MAKES ME ALSO REALLY HAPPY, BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO GET ME TO LOOK YOUNGER, YOU KNOW. AND YES, IT'S AMAZING. THAT'S WHAT FILM DOES.

>> I KNOW, WHEN YOU MENTIONED YOUR SON, YOU DO HAVE TO WATCH OUT FOR HIM AND SPOILERS. HE DIDN'T KNOW THE END. YOU TOLD ME AN HILARIOUS STORY AROUND THE TIME "ROGUE ONE" CAME OUT WHERE HE WAS USING SOME INTEL. CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT THAT?

>> YES, WE WERE IN A POOL AT A HOTEL IN A BEACH TOWN IN MEXICO. I HEAR MY SON IN THE POOL, HE WAS LIKE 8 OR 9 BACK THEN AND THERE WERE THESE LIKE 16-YEAR-OLD GIRLS AND THEY WERE LAUGHING AND HE WAS IN THE MIDDLE. I JUST GOT CLOSE AND CLOSE AND CLOSE AND I HEAR, WELL, YEAH, I MEAN IN THIS FILM THERE'S NO JEDIS, BUT -- AND HE WAS JUST BASICALLY TELLING THEM THE WHOLE STORY.

>> WELL, WELL BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT.

>> LIKE SIX MONTHS BEFORE. AND THE GIRLS WERE LIKE OH, MY GOD.

>> AND THEN IT WAS ON "TMZ" THE NEXT DAY. IT WAS CRAZY. WE WILL OPEN IT UP TO THE AUDIENCE.

>> HI, YOU PLAYED A LOT OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERS THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER. IS THERE ONE YOU IDENTIFY AS A PERSON WITH THE MOST?

>> THAT'S INTERESTING. I WISH -- I PLAYED A FOOTBALLER ONCE AND I WISH I WAS A FOOTBALLER. I GREW UP THINKING I HAD THE SKILLS AND CLEARLY I DIDN'T. BUT IT WAS AN INTERESTING WAY TO CONNECT TO A WORLD THAT FASCINATES ME. WITH FOOTBALLERS AND I'M TALKING SOCCER, BECAUSE HERE FOOTBALLERS ARE BIGGER AND THEY HAVE HELMETS. BUT, NO, THESE GUYS, THE WORLD OF SOCCER PLAYERS, WAS LIKE REALLY INTERESTING TO ME, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE I SEEM TO BE LIKE NOTHING WOULD GET ME SO EXCITED BUT BEING NEXT TO A FOOTBALLER. I DON'T KNOW WHY BECAUSE MANY OF THEM HAVE NOTHING TO SAY. BUT IT WAS LIKE HOLY SHIT. THIS GUY IS LIKE AMAZING. SO ANYWAY, WE PLAY, WE DID A FILM THAT ALLOWED ME TO GO INTO THE WORLD OF FOOTBALLERS AND BE VERY CRITIC ABOUT THAT WORLD AND INTERACT WITH THEM AND PLAY IN REAL STADIUMS. THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN. BUT I HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON, I JUST WISH I WAS PART OF THAT WORLD. BUT I GUESS Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN IT'S THE CLOSEST FILM TO ME IN MANY WAYS. I THINK THE ISSUES WE TALKED ABOUT THEN ARE ISSUES THAT MATTERED TO ME A LOT AT THAT TIME. EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT THE SON OF A POLITICIAN AND I DON'T -- GLADLY, I DON'T HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT GUILT AND WITH THAT FEELING OF BEING PART OF THE SICKNESS OF YOUR COUNTRY AND STILL LOVE THAT FAMILY, YOU KNOW. BUT I DO -- I DO SEE FRIENDSHIP IN A WAY ALFONSO WANTED TO PORTRAY THIS ONE. I DO HAVE FRIENDS THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN IN YEARS THAT I DON'T KNOW WHY, AND THEY WERE SO SPECIAL TO ME IN A MOMENT AND WE EXPERIENCED A TRANSFORMATION TOGETHER, AND THEN SUDDENLY FOR A REASON I DON'T KNOW, WAS PLAYED -- SPLIT AND YOU DON'T SEE THEM AGAIN. I KIND OF HAVE THAT NOSTALGIA INSIDE, SO YEAH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NEXT UP.

>> HI.

>> HI.

>> I HEARD YOU WERE ORIGINALLY RELUCTANT TO TAKE THE ROLE IN "NARCOS" AND I WAS KIND OF WONDERING WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT IT.

>> I WAS VERY WORRIED, I DIDN'T WANT TO BE PART OF A PROJECT THAT WOULD GLORIFY THE LIFE OF DRUG DEALERS OR WOULD JUST MAKE JUST FUN AND INTERESTING AND COOL THE VIOLENCE MY COUNTRY IS GOING THROUGH TODAY. AND I WANTED TO DO -- TO BE PART OF A PROJECT THAT WOULD TALK ABOUT THE COMPLEXITY OF AN ISSUE. AND WHERE NO ONE IS CELEBRATED. IT'S JUST PEOPLE SURVIVING AND MANY VICTIMS OF A SYSTEM, YOU KNOW. AND IT TOOK ME TIME TO REALIZE THEY WANTED TO DO THE SAME SHOW. AT THE BEGINNING I WAS SCARED BECAUSE I WAS LIKE OH, SHIT, THIS IS -- THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY TO TACKLE THE ISSUE, YOU KNOW. BUT THEN I SAT DOWN WITH ERIC NEWMAN, WHO IS THE SHOW RUNNER AND PRODUCER AND WRITER OF THIS SHOW, AND HE BASICALLY SAID EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR AND NOT BECAUSE HE WAS TRYING TO CONVINCE ME BECAUSE HE TRULY BELIEVED IN THAT AND HE KNOWS THE ISSUE BETTER THAN I DID, THE AMOUNT OF RESEARCH THEY'VE BEEN DOING, IT'S AMAZING, AND I STARTED LEARNING SO MUCH ABOUT MY COUNTRY THAT I DIDN'T KNOW. IT WAS AN INTERESTING PROCESS. BUT, YES, IT TOOK ME TIME. WHEN AN AMERICAN COMPANY AND A FRENCH COMPANY COME TO YOU AND SAY WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY, YOU GO, LIKE, OKAY. AND REALLY WHY YOU? BUT THEN I REALIZE THE WORK THEY DO IS -- IS REALLY ACCURATE, RIGOROUS AND SOMETHING ELSE THAT CAN REACH AN AUDIENCE THAT PROBABLY IF I DO A TINY DOCUMENTARY IN MEXICO ABOUT THE ISSUE WE'RE GOING THROUGH, NO ONE WILL WATCH. SO, YES, THAT CONVINCED ME.

>> ALL RIGHT. WE'VE GOT ONE LAST QUESTION.

>> HELLO.

>> HI.

>> BETWEEN "ROGUE ONE" AND "NARCOS," THERE'S A LOT OF REALLY COOL ACTION SCENES. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU DO SOME OF YOUR OWN STUNT WORK? AND IF SO, WHAT WAS THE COOLEST ONE IN YOUR OPINION?

>> NO, I MEAN, THAT'S LIKE -- I DON'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT. I AM JUST THINKING BECAUSE I THINK IN SPANISH AND THEN I HAVE TO TRANSLATE THE WORDS IN ENGLISH, BUT I WOULD SAY THERE'S NOTHING LIKE BEING IN "STAR WARS" AND HAVING A BLASTER IN YOUR HAND AND BEING ABLE -- IN FACT, BEING ASKED TO SHOOT STORMTROOPERS. IT'S LIKE WHAT, REALLY? CAN WE DO ANOTHER TAKE AND ANOTHER ONE AND ANOTHER ONE? I DON'T NEED A STUNT FOR THAT. I LOVED IT. THERE WAS ALSO GARETH, THE DIRECTOR OF "ROGUE ONE" WAS REALLY INTERESTED IN US GOING THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE AND DOING KIND OF LIKE WHAT WAR MOVIES HAVE, YOU KNOW, THAT YOU REALLY GO THROUGH THE STRUGGLE OF BEING IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE. HE ASKED US TO DO THAT AND WE TRAINED FOR THAT. AND IT WAS AMAZING, YOU KNOW. EVEN IF YOU GET HURT OR WHATEVER, I WOULD NEVER TELL ANYONE. IT WAS LIKE NO, NO, NO, NO, I WANT TO DO ANOTHER ONE.
