Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton & Richard Rankin Talk Season 4 Of "Outlander"

Season four of “Outlander” continues the story of time-traveling 20th-century doctor Claire Fraser and her 18th century Highlander husband Jamie Fraser as they try to make a home for themselves in colonial America. We find the Frasers in North Carolina, in a place called Fraser’s Ridge at yet another turning point in history – the cusp of the American Revolution. Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin stopped by to talk about the return of the hit STARZ series.

>>> HELLO EVERYONE! WELCOME TO BUILD. I'M BRITNEY JONES COOPER AND TODAY WE'RE TALKING ALL THINGS "OUTLANDER.” SEASON 4 OF THE STARZ DRAMA CONTINUES THE STORY OF TIME TRAVELING 20th CENTURY DOCTOR CLAIRE FRAZIER AND HER 18TH CENTURY HIGHLANDER HUSBAND JAMIE AS THEY TRY TO MAKE A HOME FOR THEMSELVES IN COLONIAL AMERICA AT THE CUSP OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. TODAY I'LL BE JOINED BY SAM HEUGHAN, SOPHIE SKELTON AND RICHARD RANKIN. BUT FIRST THE TRAILER FROM “OUTLANDER.”

>> DO YOU KNOW WHAT LIES BEHIND THOSE TREES? THIS IS JUST THE START OF WHAT AMERICA WILL BECOME. PEOPLE WILL COME HERE IN THEIR THOUSANDS. ALL HOPING TO LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM.

>> THIS IS OUR DREAM.

>> I SUPPOSE IT IS.

>> WELCOME TO RIVER RUN.

>> THANK YOU, AUNTY.

>> NORTH CAROLINA OFFERS WEALTH AND PROSPERITY.

>> I DON'T AGREE WITH KEEPING PEOPLE AS PROPERTY.

>> WE MUST LEAVE.

>> LEAVE ON OUR OWN TERMS.

>> IT'S PERFECT.

>> IF I CAN MAKE THIS A GOOD LAND, MY PRESENCE HERE IN AMERICA CAN BE FELT LATER. AND THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING.

>> I'M STEVEN BONNET, SIR.

>> BE WARY, TRAVELERS IN THESE WOODS ARE SET UPON BY THIEVES AND OUTLAWS.

>> THEY'RE SAVAGES HERE.

>> OH MY GOD.

>> SHOULDN'T SHE KNOW THE TRUTH?

>> HELLO?

>> DEANNA? I HAVE SOME NEWS ABOUT YOUR MOTHER.

>> EVERYTHING'S IN MY POWER.

>> OH MY GOD.

>> JAMIE!

>> IT'S A SILVER FILLING, SOMETHING THAT WON'T BE INVENTED FOR 100 YEARS.

>> THIS LEADS US INTO FIGHTING IN ANOTHER WAR. WE WILL BE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY AGAIN.

>> I CAN'T CHANGE THE WORLD.

>> A DREAM FOR SOME. A NIGHTMARE FOR OTHERS.

>> SOMETIMES LIFE TAKES UNEXPECTED TURNS.

>> EVERYONE PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR SAM HEUGHAN AND SOPHIE SKELTON AND RICHARD RANKIN! HOW ARE YOU GUYS DOING?

>> GOOD, THANKS.

>> GOOD.

>> GOOD, THANK YOU.

>> I HAVE TO SAY, YOU HAVE THE BEST FANS IN TELEVISION.

>> WE DO.

>> THAT MUST FEEL VERY GOOD GOING INTO SEASON 4, OF THAT THE FAN BASE.

>> YOU GUYS HAVE SUPPORTED US FOR SO LONG. WE'RE SORRY ABOUT THE "DROUGHTLANDER" AGAIN. IT’S AMAZING! WE'RE VERY LUCKY ON THIS SHOW THEY'RE CONSTANTLY SUPPORTING US AND WELCOMING US AND HOPEFULLY WE DON'T MESS IT UP THIS SEASON.

>> THANK YOU AND WE HOPE THE LONGER "DROUGHTLANDER" IS WORTH THE WAIT. IT’S A PRETTY EPIC SEASON!

>> AT THE END OF LAST SEASON WE SEE SAM AND CLAIRE WASH UP ON THE SHORES OF WHAT IS AMERICA. WHERE DO WE PICK UP IN SEASON 4?

>> JAMIE AND CLAIRE ARE IN AMERICA. THEY'RE WITH THEIR EXTENDED FAMILY. THEY HAVE YOUNG EWAN WITH THEM, FRIENDS AND SHIPMATES. THEY'RE REALLY TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES AND ACTUALLY FIND THEIR WAY BACK TO SCOTLAND. VERY QUICKLY THEY REALIZE AMERICA IS GOING TO BECOME THEIR NEW HOME. IT'S A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY BUT ALSO IT'S A LAND THAT HAS A LOT TO WORK THROUGH AND A LOT OF ISSUES. AND THERE'S SOME SURPRISES THERE AS WELL. SORT OF TRYING TO TALK AROUND SPOILERS. YEAH, IT'S VERY MUCH ABOUT HOME FOR JAMIE AND CLAIRE, CERTAINLY, ABOUT THEM LAYING FOUNDATIONS FOR YEARS TO COME.

>> WHAT I LOVE ABOUT CLAIRE THAT IS SHE KNOWS THE FUTURE. SO SHE KNOWS THAT THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IS COMING. HOW DOES THAT IMPACT HOW THEY'RE ABLE TO SETTLE AND MAKE A NEW LIFE?

>> YES, SHE DOES. AND, YOU KNOW, NOT ONLY IS IT REWARDING FOR HER COMING TO AMERICA, SHE HAS ALREADY BECOME AN AMERICAN CITIZEN AND LIVED IN BOSTON IN THE FUTURE. BUT, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE TRYING TO MAKE A CHANGE IN BRIANA'S LIFE. FOR JAMIE IT'S A WAY FOR HIM TO HAVE SOME SORT OF INFLUENCE ON HER LIFE IN THE FUTURE. HE WANTS TO HELP BUILD AND MOLD AMERICA INTO THIS NEW HOME AND THIS GREAT LAND AND A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY AND AN EQUAL SORT OF -- EQUAL RIGHTS FOR PEOPLE. YEAH IT'S A WAY FOR HIM TO CERTAINLY HAVE SOME INFLUENCE ON HIS DAUGHTER IN THE FUTURE.

>> THAT'S WHY I LOVE THIS SHOW, THE WRITING SO IS INTRICATE AND BEAUTIFUL. THE FACT THAT HE'S NOW CENTURIES BACK, TRYING TO MAKE THE LIFE OF HIS DAUGHTER BETTER, WHO'S NOW LIVING IN THE 1970s IN BOSTON. TELL US WHAT SHE'S UP TO.

>> YES. OBVIOUSLY IT'S A VERY BIG CONTRAST OF A TIME. WE'VE KIND OF LEFT THE '60s AND WE'RE IN THAT SORT OF LIGHTHEARTED, VIBRANT '70s VIBE. FOR BRIANA, SHE'S STILL SORT OF DEALING WITH ESSENTIALLY THE DEATH OF HER MOTHER. SHE SORT OF SENT HER BACK TO THE PAST AND SHE DOESN'T KNOW -- SHE WON'T, SHE THINKS, SEE HER AGAIN. FOR BRIE, SHE'S TRYING TO FORGET ABOUT IT, ALMOST. BRIE IS MAINLY WORRIED ABOUT CLAIRE, MADE IT BACK, WHETHER SHE'S SAFE, WHETHER SHE FOUND JAMIE, WHETHER THEY'RE HAPPY, IF HE MOVED ON, IF THEY'RE EVEN TOGETHER.

>> START THE "OUTLANDER" THEME TUNE, THE RING TONE.

>> IF A RING TONE IS GOING TO INTERRUPT AN INTERVIEW, THAT'S THE ONE.

>> IT'S ALLOWED. IT BETTER BE THE SEASON 4 ONE.

>> WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE VIBRANT '70s AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH THE SOUNDTRACK. YEAH, SO BRIE'S SORT OF, YOU KNOW -- SHE HAD THIS HUGE LOYALTY AND LOVE FOR FRANK, TO FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTPATH AND BOND WITH HIM. NOW FINDING OUT HER NEW PARENTAGE, SHE'S SORT OF FOLLOWED HER GUT AND CHANGED TO ENGINEERING. SHE'S NOW STUDYING AT MIT.

>> DOES SHE STAY IN UNIVERSITY? DOES SHE DROP OUT?

>> SHE WOULD NEVER DROP OUT.

>> SHE'D ALWAYS SEE IT TO THE END.

>> FIRST DEGREE, SHE WILL, OF COURSE.

>> NO PARTYING.

>> NO, NEVER.

>> SUCH A STRICT DAD.

>> YES.

>> I MEAN, WHISKEY'S NOT AN ALCOHOL, RIGHT?

>> NO.

>> NO.

>> I MEAN, YOU DON'T SEEM TO THINK IT IS.

>> WHILE BRIE'S MOM ISN'T THERE, SHE DOES A ROGER. WHAT ROLE DO YOU PLAY IN HER LIFE IN SEASON 4?

>> WHAT?

>> I'M JUST THERE TO SERVE BRIANA.

>> WELL, ROGER AND BRIANA, I WOULDN'T SAY HE HAS HER, NOT YET, ANYWAY, OR VICE VERSA. BECAUSE THEY -- WHEN YOU FIND THEM IN SEASON 4, THEY ARE KIND OF ATTEMPTING A LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP. IN A WORLD THAT'S MUCH LARGER IN THE '60s AND '70s. TRANSPORT'S NOT SO EASY. EXPENSIVE, TIME-CONSUMING WHEN YOU'VE GOT THINGS LIKE CHURCH TO GO TO.

>> SAY CHURCH AGAIN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE AMERICAN AUDIENCE.

>> CHURCH. THANKS FOR THAT.

>> YOU'LL ENJOY THAT.

>> THEY'RE BOTH LOVING THEIR OWN SEPARATE LIVES WHEN YOU FIND THEM AT THE START OF SEASON 4. I THINK ROGER HASN'T HAD TIME TO GRIEVE FOR THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER. CLAIRE AND BRIANA ARE VERY MUCH CONSUMED AND GOT REALLY WRAPPED UP IN ALL OF THAT, ALL OF THE DRAMA THAT WAS SURROUNDING THAT. I THINK NOW WHEN YOU FIND THEM AT THE START OF SEASON 4, HE'S LOST, HE HAS NO ANCHOR, HE'S NOT REALLY SURE WHICH DIRECTION HE'S HEADED. HE HOPES IT'S BRIANA. BUT THAT'S NOT NECESSARILY GOING TO BE THE CASE. BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME HURDLES FOR THEM TO OVERCOME, DISTANCE ONLY BEING ONE OF THEM.

>> AREN'T THERE ALWAYS OBSTACLES IN "OUTLANDER"? BUST JUST WHEN YOU THINK THINGS ARE GOING SMOOTHLY.

>> WE LOVE DRAMA, YEAH.

>> AS SOON AS YOUR TEARS HAVE DRIED, WE'RE GOING TO START THEM AGAIN.

>> I DID READ SOMETHING THAT BRIE MAY BE DOING SOME TIME TRAVELING OF HER OWN?

>> WHAT?

>> WHAT?

>> I MEAN --

>> EXCUSE ME. HANG ON A MINUTE. ARE YOU GOING SOMEWHERE?

>> THAT MAKES LONG DISTANCE EVEN WORSE.

>> YEAH. I MEAN, WE KNOW FROM THE END OF SEASON 2 THAT BRIANA CAN TIME TRAVEL. THEY HEAR THE BUZZING OF THE STONES. WHETHER THEY DO OR NOT IS UP IN THE AIR.

>> PLEASE DON'T GO BACK. THAT'S JUST GOING TO MAKE MY LIFE SO MUCH MORE DIFFICULT.

>> SO BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING FOR SURE, WE DON'T WANT ANY SPOILER, WE CAN SPEAK IN HYPOTHETICALS.

>> OH, OKAY.

>> LET'S SAY THAT BRIE GETS BACK AND SHE GETS TO MEET HER FATHER, JAMIE. HOW DO YOU GUYS IMAGINE THAT GOING?

>> HYPOTHETICALLY?

>> HYPOTHETICALLY. IF THEY WERE TO MEET, DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD MEETING OR A SENTIMENTAL MEETING OR WILL SHE BE BAD BECAUSE HE WASN'T THERE?

>> I DON'T THINK BRIE WOULD BE MAD AT JAMIE. I THINK SHE PERFECTLY UNDERSTANDS THE COMPLEX SITUATION THEY ARE IN. I THINK IT'S AN INTERESTING TOPIC, THOUGH. I DO THINK BRIANA AND FRANK WERE VERY CLOSE, AND I THINK THE IDEA OF MEETING JAMIE WOULD FEEL A SLIGHT BETRAYAL IN A WAY. ALSO, ALTHOUGH YOU WOULD WANT THEM TO HAVE THIS SORT OF BIG REUNION, AND YES, THIS KIND OF BIOLOGICAL CONNECTION BECAUSE THEY DO SHARE THE SAME BLOOD, THERE IS THAT ELEMENT OF BRIE'S 20 YEARS OLD, SHE'S A STRANGER, SHE'S NOT HIS BABY ANYMORE, SHE'S A WOMAN. THEY REALLY DON'T KNOW EACH OTHER. THEY'RE OFF IN DIFFERENT TIMES SO THEY DO HAVE DIFFERENT VIEWS ON THINGS. IF THEY WERE TO MEET, IT MIGHT NOT BE AS SMOOTH AS ONE MIGHT HOPE.

>> NICELY ANSWERED.

>> I THINK JAMIE HAS ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A FATHER. YOU KNOW, HE HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO. WILLIE AND FAITH AND NOW BRIANA AS WELL. SO FOR HIM IT'S PROBABLY A BITTERSWEET THING, DEFINITELY, HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING.

>> GOOD ANSWERS, GUYS. SPEAKING OF JAMIE AND CLAIRE, WE'VE SEEN THEIR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP EVOLVE OVER THE SEASONS. OBVIOUSLY FROM THEM GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER, TO BEING IN SEPARATE CENTURIES, TO NOW THEY'RE BACK IN A PLACE WHERE WE CAN REALLY SEE THEM IN THIS COMMITTED, LOVING RELATIONSHIP. SO HOW HAS THAT CHANGED THE INTIMACY OF THEIR DYNAMIC GOING INTO SEASON 4?

>> WELL, LIKE YOU SAID, FOR THREE SEASONS JAMIE AND CLAIRE HAVE ALWAYS SORT OF BEEN STRUGGLING TO BE TOGETHER, FIGHTING TO BE TOGETHER. NOW FOR ONCE THEY'RE IN THE SAME PLACE. AND CAN ACTUALLY REALLY SORT OF ENJOY EACH OTHER'S COMPANY. THAT'S WHAT THEY WANTED FOR A LONG TIME, TO REALLY BE AT HOME TOGETHER AND START TO BUILD THIS FAMILY AND THIS LIFE FOR THEMSELVES. SO IT IS LOVELY TO BE ABLE TO SEE THEM IN SOME SORT OF DOMESTICITY, DOMESTIC LIFE. AS YOU SAID, IT'S "OUTLANDER" SO IT DOESN'T LAST LONG.

>> WILL WE SEE THEIR PASSION CHANGE OR FIZZLE?

>> IT'S VERY DEAD NOW, YEAH.

>> THE OLD, STALE RELATIONSHIP?

>> I'M SORRY, GUYS.

>> STALE.

>> FOR BRIANA'S SAKE, I HOPE IT'S STALE.

>> YEAH, YEAH. NO, I MEAN -- YOU KNOW, IT'S LIKE -- THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY, AND CERTAINLY JAMIE AND CLAIRE, YOU KNOW, ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR EACH OTHER, AND IT'S VERY MUCH PART OF THEIR LIFE. SO I THINK IF IT'S IN THE BOOKS, IT WILL BE IN THE SHOW, HOPEFULLY.

>> GOOD? YEAH, CLAP FOR THAT, YEAH. SPEAKING OF THE BOOKS, WHO ALL READ THE BOOKS? CLAP YOUR HANDS. ALL RIGHT, SO WE'VE GOT BIG FANS. HOW MUCH FOCUS IS THERE EACH SEASON TO MAKING SURE THAT YOU SORT OF FOLLOW THE TIMELINE OF THE BOOKS? BECAUSE THE READERS ARE SO LOYAL TO THAT.

>> YEAH, I THINK AS MUCH AS THERE'S AN ELEMENT OF TRYING TO SORT OF KEEP, YOU KNOW, KEEP THE BOOKS AS TRUE FOR THE BOOK READERS, IT'S ALWAYS DIFFICULT WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR HEART SET ON SOMETHING AND IT CHANGES, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THE BOOKS HAVE BEEN AROUND SO LONG. THERE'S THAT ELEMENT OF MAKING IT FRESH, MAKING IT NEW. AND ALSO TV, THINGS DO HAVE TO CHANGE A BIT. THERE'S THINGS IN A BOOK THAT WORK THAT ON SCREEN DON'T. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, YOU KNOW, IT IS A TIME TRAVEL THING. I THINK IF THE WRITERS CHANGE TOO MUCH, YOU'D GET TO BOOK EIGHT AND THINK, OH, WE NEEDED THAT. SO I THINK THE WRITERS HAVE A HARD JOB IN THAT THEY HAVE TO KIND OF HAVE ALL THE BOOKS IN THEIR MIND AT ONCE. IF THEY DO WANT TO CHOP AND CHANGE SOMETHING, IT DOES HAVE A KNOCK-ON EFFECT. DEFINITELY, IF THERE ARE SCENES YOU MIGHT BE DISAPPOINTED ON IN THE SEASON THAT ARE NUANCED TO COMPENSATE, HOPEFULLY THEY MAKE IT UP.

>> WE DO STICK TO THE BOOKS AS MUCH AS WE CAN, BUT I THINK WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THIS SEASON IS THAT WE DO -- THERE'S SOME SURPRISES IN THERE FOR FANS OF THE BOOKS. WHICH I THINK IS GREAT. BECAUSE YOU GUYS KNOW THE BOOKS, BUT THERE'S SOME THINGS IN THERE THAT ARE ALSO PART OF DIANA GABALDON'S WORLD THAT YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING. YEAH, I HOPE YOU LIKE IT.

>> I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS NEW WORLD A LITTLE BIT. BECAUSE AT LEAST IN THE FIRST EPISODE I SAW, YOU'RE DEALING WITH ALL OF THESE THINGS IN THE AMERICAN HISTORY, LIKE SLAVERY AND THE NATIVE PEOPLE. IT'S BEEN INTERESTING TO SEE HOW JAMIE AND CLAIRE NAVIGATE THAT. THEY REALLY ARE TRYING TO STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY. SO IS THAT SORT OF INTERESTING TO EXPLORE? I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED THE SHOW HANDLED IT THAT WAY.

>> AND THERE ARE BIG ISSUES. AND I THINK THERE ARE BIG THINGS TO DISCUSS. BUT IT'S VERY MUCH PART OF THE WORLD THEY'RE IN NOW. JAMIE AND CLAIRE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO CIRCUMNAVIGATE HISTORY, TRYING TO CHANGE HISTORY. WE KNOW THERE'S GREAT CHANGE COMING AND THERE'S GREAT THINGS GOING TO HAPPEN. BUT YEAH THEY'RE TRYING TO FIND THEIR PLACE IN THIS NEW WORLD. CLAIRE OBVIOUSLY IS MORE SORT OF CLUED INTO WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. BUT JIMMY IS A MAN OF HIS TIME YET CERTAINLY DOESN'T WANT ANY PART OF THE SLAVERY SIDE. IT'S BEEN A LEARNING CURVE FOR US AS WELL AS BRITISH PEOPLE TO LEARN ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY.

>> WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU'VE LEARNED ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY? FROM DOING THIS SHOW?

>> I MEAN, I DON'T KNOW THAT ROGER GETS PARTICULARLY INVOLVED IN THE AMERICAN HISTORY PART. YOU KNOW, YOU FIND HE'S STILL VERY MUCH HAPPY AND LOVING HIS LIFE IN OXFORD. OBVIOUSLY ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING THINGS THAT I THINK I LEARNED WAS HOW TO SAY "DOGFACE" AND "MOHAWK.” IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE. I JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE TO SAY THAT ONE DAY.

>> I DON'T KNOW, "DOGFACE"?

>> THAT'S HOW YOU SAY "DOGFACE” AND "MOHAWK.” I LEARNED A FEW, "STOP.” FLOATING AROUND ON SET, WE HAD A LOT OF FASCINATION OVER LANGUAGE IN SEASON 4. I FOUND THEM FASCINATING. THE CULTURE, THE LANGUAGE. YEAH, HUGELY FASCINATING. SO I VERY MUCH ENJOYED THAT ASPECT OF SEASON 4.

>> HOW ABOUT YOU, SOPHIE?

>> I MEAN -- IT'S NOT SO MUCH ABOUT THE AMERICAN HISTORY SIDE, BECAUSE AGAIN, OBVIOUSLY, BRIE'S SAFE AND HAPPY IN THE VIBRANT '70s. WE WERE SAYING EARLIER THERE'S ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK WHO ORIGINALLY WAS WRITTEN AS THIS VERY LIGHT, BLOND, DITZY, AND WE'VE CHANGED THAT TO BE A WOMAN OF COLOR, WHICH IS A REALLY NICE CHANGE TO BRING THE PARALLEL BETWEEN WHAT JAMIE AND CLAIRE ARE -- ALMOST IN AN AWFUL WAY HAVING TO BE OKAY WITH, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY CLAIRE WANTS TO CHANGE THIS WORLD, AND WHAT WAS TAKEN AS SORT OF THE NORM AT THE TIME IN TERMS OF SLAVERY IS SOMETHING THAT OBVIOUSLY WE NOWADAYS, AS TIME WENT ON, REALLY RESENTED AND FELT AWFUL ABOUT. BUT THERE'S NOTHING REALLY THAT CLAIRE CAN DO. SHE'D STICK OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB, THEN SHE'D BE KILLED AND THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO DO BECAUSE SHE WOULDN'T THERE BE TO DO IT. IT'S NICE TO SHOW THE PARALLEL WITH BRIE, SHE WAS ONE OF TWO PEOPLE STUDYING ENGINEER AT THE TIME, HER AND THIS AFRICAN-AMERICAN GIRL. I THINK IT'S REALLY COOL BECAUSE IT SHOWS HOW MUCH TIME HAS CHANGED. AND I GUESS IT GIVES A LITTLE BIT OF HOPE IN TERMS WHAT WAS JAMIE AND CLAIRE, YOU KNOW, DID DO OR COULD DO.

>> HOW ABOUT YOU? ANY INTERESTING TIDBITS ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY YOU DON'T KNOW?

>> OUR WRITERS AND PRODUCERS WERE VERY -- VERY KEEN TO RESEARCH THE NATIVE AMERICAN SIDE, ESPECIALLY AS RICK SAID, WE HAD OVER 100 CREE AND CHEROKEE, FIRST NATION PEOPLE, FROM CANADA, I THINK, MOSTLY. BUT THEY BROUGHT THIS AMAZING CULTURE AND THE SIMILARITIES ACTUALLY ARE QUITE STRIKING BETWEEN WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SCOTS AND THE CLANS IN SCOTLAND AND TO THE NATIVE AMERICANS IN AMERICA. I THINK JAMIE CERTAINLY SEES THAT PARALLEL AND THERE ARE TWO WARRIOR CULTURES AND HAVE THESE TRADITION THAT IS I THINK HE RESPECTS. KIND OF THIS UNWRITTEN MUTUAL RESPECT BETWEEN THE TWO AFTER WHAT HAPPENS AT FIRST. BUT YEAH, IT WAS A REALLY INTERESTING CULTURE TO GET TO KNOW ABOUT. AND REALLY BRINGS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FLAVOR TO "OUTLANDER” THAN WE'VE SEEN BEFORE.

>> IT'S SET IN SOUTH CAROLINA, BUT YOU DIDN'T FILM THERE, RIGHT?

>> SOUTH CAROLINA? NO. WE WERE IN SCOTLAND.

>> LOOKS REMARKABLY SIMILAR.

>> THERE'S A MOTORWAY BETWEEN GLASGOW AND EDINBURGH, SO GLAMOROUS.

>> IT MUST BE A SIMILAR ENOUGH TERRAIN?

>> I'M NOT SURE. I THINK THERE'S A STORY I'M NOT ALLOWED TO TELL. THERE WAS ONE OF OUR NATIVE AMERICANS WHO GOT OFF A HORSE AND AN ARROW ENDED UP IN HIS LEG. AND HE WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL. I CAN IMAGINE THE SCOTTISH HIGHLAND NURSE STANDING THERE AS THIS NATIVE AMERICAN, FULL OUTFIT, COMES WALKING IN EIGHTH AN ARROW IN THE LEG. I'M SURE NO ONE BELIEVED HER STORY THAT NIGHT. BUT IT'S FUN. IN -- IT IS REMARKABLE, THE SCENERY THERE IS SIMILAR TO NORTH CAROLINA.

>> I COULD ASK YOU MORE QUESTIONS BUT I KNOW THE AUDIENCE HAS A FEW. WHO HAS THE MIKE FIRST? RIGHT THERE.

>> HI.

>> YOU TURNED YOUR PHONE OFF. YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

>> I AM SO SORRY. MY QUESTION IS, EACH OF YOU HAVE BEEN INHABITING YOUR CHARACTER FOR VARIOUS PERIODS OF TIME. SAM, OBVIOUSLY YOU THE LONGEST. IS THERE, FOR EACH OF YOU, A PARTICULAR ASPECT OF YOUR CHARACTER'S PERSONALITY THAT YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING TO PORTRAY?

>> THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.

>> I THINK --

>> THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION.

>> I THINK SOMETIMES, AND MAYBE THIS SPEAKS FOR SOME OF IT, BUT THE PHRASES CAN BE, IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, SLIGHTLY HOT-HEADED.

>> THAT WAS GOING TO BE MY ANSWER.

>> SOMETIMES IT CAN FEEL BIPOLAR. ONE MOMENT THEY'RE FINE, NEXT THEY'VE GONE OFF THE RAILS WITH RED-HOT ANGER. SO MAYBE THAT.

>> I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING. CERTAINLY JAMIE IN SEASON 1 AND 2, HE'S YOUNGER, HE'S MORE TEMPESTUOUS, QUICK TO FLY OFF THE HANDLE AND NOT THINKING ABOUT CONSEQUENCES. AS HE'S GOT OLDER, I THINK WE SEE HE'S BECOME MORE EXPERIENCED AND MATURE. THEY DO HAVE SOME RATHER STUBBORN SIDE TO THEM, WHICH IS QUITE INTERESTING. WHEREAS McKENZIE --

>> McKENZIE?

>> JUST STOP.

>> HASH TAG.

>> RIGHT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT -- I FEEL QUITE -- ROGER WAS A CHALLENGE. I ALSO FEEL VERY LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN PRESENTED WITH THAT OPPORTUNITY AT THE SAME TIME. BECAUSE HE'S VERY DIFFICULT, VERY DIFFERENT TO ANY CHARACTER I THINK I'VE EVER PLAYED BEFORE. HE'S VERY RESERVED, VERY MILD-MANNERED, VERY CONSERVATIVE, QUITE TRADITIONAL. VERY OF HIS TIME. I THINK FOR ME, APPROACHING HIM PHYSICALLY, VOCALLY, JUST THE ATTITUDE, THE WAY HE PRESENTS HIMSELF, WAS QUITE CHALLENGING AND I HAD TO PUT A LOT OF THOUGHT AND DEVELOPMENT INTO THAT SIDE OF ROGER. BECAUSE HE'S NOWHERE NEAR AS COOL AS I AM. SO I HAD TO REALLY TONE THAT DOWN QUITE A LOT.

>> WHEN YOU'RE WEARING A WOOLEN SWEATER --

>> I WAS WEARING A SWEATER TODAY. FOR YOU EAGLE-EYED FANS, YOU PROBABLY NOTICED THAT I'VE CHANGED.

>> I THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY ROGER.

>> YEAH, I'VE BEEN GETTING ABUSE FROM SAM AND SOPHIE FOR HOW I DRESS. I WAS JUST CHANNELING ROGER, YOU SEE? IT WASN'T ME.

>> IT WORKED.

>> NEXT QUESTION?

>> HI. SO OBVIOUSLY --

>> MAKEUP.

>> IT'S NOT MAKEUP.

>> THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF THAT'S GOING ON THROUGHOUT SEASON 4 IN VARIOUS DIFFERENT PLACES. BUT OUT OF EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON, WHO HAS THE MOST DIFFICULT JOURNEY EMOTIONALLY FOR THIS NEXT UPCOMING SEASON?

>> I THINK WE WERE ALL -- I'M SORRY, IN CHARACTER HERE.

>> ROLLO. HE'S VERY NEEDY, NEEDS A LOT OF ATTENTION.

>> LIKE ROGER?

>> OH! I DON'T KNOW, I THINK SEASON 4'S A BIG ONE FOR ALL THE CHARACTERS INVOLVED. AND I THINK EACH OF THEM GO THROUGH -- I THINK THEY'RE ALL REALLY TESTED TO THE ABSOLUTE LIMITS. THEY HAVE A LOT OF TRIALS BEFORE THEM. IN TERMS OF THE INDIVIDUALS AND THE RELATIONSHIPS GO THROUGH A LOT OF STRESS. ROGER AND BRIANA ARE PUT THROUGH A LOT. JAMIE AND CLAIRE HAVE A LOT GOING ON IN SEASON 4. THERE ARE A LOT OF CHARACTERS INTRODUCED IN SEASON 4 THAT YOU FOLLOW A BIT THROUGH THE SEASON. IT'S EPIC, IT'S HUGE. SEASON 4, THERE'S A LOT IN IT. IT'S STRESSFUL AT POINTS.

>> YEAH, I MEAN -- AS I SAY, I FEEL LIKE WE'D ALL SAY OUR OWN CHARACTERS. ONCE YOU FEEL IN THEIR HEAD, BUT I FEEL LIKE MOST OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN OR GO WRONG IN A PERSON'S LIFE HAPPENS TO BRIANA THIS SEASON.

>> I TRIED TO DO THE WHOLE CAST THING, BUT NO.

>> POOR BRIE. SHE REALLY IS.

>> POOR BRIE.

>> DON'T START WITH ME.

>> THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH.

>> I WATCHED THE FIRST EPISODE. JAMIE AND CLAIRE GOT PUT THROUGH IT. RIGHT NOW I'M THINKING THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH A LOT IN SEASON 4.

>> LIKE ALWAYS. THERE IS A LOT TO PUT UP WITH. YEAH I THINK EVERYONE DOES HAVE QUITE A JOURNEY, BUT BRIE I THINK FOR ME, THERE'S PARALLELS IN JAMIE'S JOURNEY, WHICH DOESN'T GIVE AWAY TOO MUCH. THERE'S A LOT OF PARALLELS THERE. I THINK HER STORY IS REMARKABLE. SOPHIE DOES AN INCREDIBLE JOB THIS SEASON, IT'S AMAZING. RICHARD, NOT SO MUCH. PHONING IT IN.

>> I TURNED UP.

>> HE TURNED UP.

>> I PAID HIM TO SAY THAT, THANK YOU.

>> NEXT QUESTION?

>> HI. WAS IT DIFFICULT TO TRANSFORM SCOTLAND INTO 18th CENTURY NORTH CAROLINA? AND DID ANY OF YOU GET A CHANCE TO VISIT NORTH CAROLINA BEFORE FILMING SEASON 4?

>> GOT TO TAKE THAT AS A NO?

>> I'VE BEEN TO NORTH CAROLINA. IT WASN'T FOR THIS SHOW. I'VE BEEN THERE. INCREDIBLY DETAILED SET. AMAZING JOB TRANSFORMING VARIOUS PARTS OF SCOTLAND ON LOCATION TO, YOU KNOW, REPLICATE NORTH CAROLINA. I WAS STUNNED TO SEE SOME OF THE SETS THAT WE HAD TO WORK ON. IT WAS AMAZING.

>> IN BOSTON?

>> BOSTON, YES. THAT'S WHAT I MEANT. THERE'S A LOT OF FORESTS INVOLVED THIS SEASON. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH WHERE I SPEND MOST OF MY TIME. WHAT I LOVED ABOUT IT, AGAIN, JOHN DID A GREAT JOB. WATCHING FRASIER'S RIDGE GROW, THE SETTLEMENT GOES FROM BEING A LEAN-TO AND A LITTLE CABIN TO REALLY GROWING INTO A FULL SETTLEMENT BY THE END OF THE SEASON. I THINK THAT'S REALLY COOL. BECAUSE WE'RE SETTING THAT UP FOR FUTURE SEASONS, YOU KNOW. BUT YEAH. I DID ALSO VISIT NORTH CAROLINA BEFORE WE STARTED. I WENT TO NEAR WHERE DIANA SAID FRASIER'S RIDGE WOULD BE. IT WAS REMARKABLE HOW SIMILAR IT WAS IN LANDSCAPE.

>> AND ONE MORE QUESTION?

>> HI. HOW'S IT GOING?

>> HI.

>> HEY.

>> I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT CHEMISTRY BETWEEN ACTORS.

>> I FAILED. I FAILED PHYSICS.

>> I'M CURIOUS TO KNOW IF YOU THINK IT'S SOMETHING YOU BUILD THROUGH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, OR IS IT SOMETHING THAT YOU AS AN ACTOR FEEL A CERTAIN, I DON'T KNOW, AFFINITY WITH THE CORRESPONDING ACTORS? IT'S AN ATTRACTION, WHETHER IT'S PERSONALITY-WISE OR PHYSICALITY? OR IS IT A CHEMISTRY THAT YOU BUILD THROUGH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

>> THAT'S SUCH A -- I MEAN, I THINK CHEMISTRY -- THE TERM CHEMISTRY, WHICH WHEN APPLIED TO ACTORS, SEEMS LIKE A BROAD TERM FOR TWO ACT THERE'S WORK REALLY WELL TOGETHER. I THINK THAT CAN BE MANY DIFFERENT FACTORS. IT CAN BE BECAUSE THEY HAVE A NATURAL KIND OF ATTRACTION IN THE FIRST PLACE. THROUGH WORKING WELL WITH EACH OTHER. SOPHIE AND I, WE ALWAYS SEEM TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE IN TERMS OF WHERE WE THINK OUR CHARACTERS ARE HEADED, WHAT WE THINK OF THE RELATIONSHIP. AND THAT IN ITSELF CAN GENERATE OR STIMULATE A CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE ACTORS. I THINK THERE ARE MANY FACTORS INVOLVED IN WHAT MAKES THAT WORK. I THINK THOSE ARE JUST A FEW OF THEM.

>> YEAH, IT'S WHAT YOU SAID. AS ACTORS YOU OFTEN GO THROUGH WHAT THEY CALL A CHEMISTRY READ WHERE YOU MEET WITH THE ACTOR WHO, IN MY CASE, IS ALREADY CAST IN THE ROLE. SO I MET WITH RICHARD, SO DID A FEW OTHER GIRLS, YOU DO A READ-THROUGH. I MET WITH KATRINA.

>> I WASN'T INTERESTED.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NO, I FEEL LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE SAT DOWN AND HAD A CHEMISTRY TEST.

>> YEAH.

>> LIKE GIVEN LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS --

>> YEAH.

>> CHOOSE COLORS. FIGURE IF IT'S ALKALINE OR ACIDIC, THEN YOU PASS AND GET THE JOB.

>> LIKE WHAT YOU WERE SAYING, IT DOES BUILD OVER TIME. IT GETS BETTER, OR IT SHOULD GET STRONGER. I DON'T KNOW, BUT IN OUR CASE, IT GETS STRONGER. YOU START TO LEARN HOW THE OTHER ACTOR WORKS, HOW TO WORK BETTER AND MORE EFFICIENTLY TOGETHER.

>> I THINK THAT'S THE THING. I THINK IT'S A GOOD MIX. SOME PEOPLE JUST NATURALLY HAVE A CHEMISTRY AND CAN WORK WELL TOGETHER. I THINK ALSO, AS RICHARD WAS SAYING, YOU CAN HAVE THE BEST CHEMISTRY ON SCREEN, BUT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE SAME IDEA FOR HOW A SCENE'S GOING TO GO, THEN IT'S STILL NOT GOING TO WORK. A MIX OF THE TWO THINGS. YEAH, HAVING THE SAME SORT OF PLAN FOR A SCENE, IF YOU LIKE. SORT OF BEING ON THE SAME PAGE AS TO WHERE YOUR ACTORS ARE.

>> I FEEL LIKE THE BEST CHEMISTRY IS KATRINA AND ROLLO. BECAUSE IT'S NEGATIVE. SHE'S NOT THE BIGGEST FAN, I WOULD SAY.

>> ROLLO'S NOT VERY PROFESSIONAL.

>> NO.

>> IT'S FUNNY. I SAW A PICTURE OF KAT AND ROLLO ON INSTAGRAM AND EVERYONE'S LIKE, OH MY GOD, THEY'RE FRIENDLY, BEST FRIENDS.

>> OH, IF YOU ONLY KNEW.

>> NOT GOOD. HE'S A BIT OF A DIVA.

>> HE IS A BIT OF A DIVA.

>> WHATEVER YOU GUYS ARE DOING, THE CHEMISTRY, IT'S WORKING AND IT CONTINUES TO WORK. I ONLY GOT TO SEE THE FIRST EPISODE, BUT GUYS, BUCKLE UP, IT'S GOING TO BE A WILD FOURTH SEASON. IF YOU GUYS WANT TO CHECK OUT THE PREMIERE, IT'S ON NOVEMBER 4th ON STARZ. YOU GUYS GIVE IT UP FOR SAM HEUGHAN, SOPHIE SKELTON, AND RICHARD RANKIN.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.
