Cedric Yarbrough Chats ABC's "Speechless"

In "Speechless," Maya DiMeo is the mom who will do anything for her husband, Jimmy, and kids Ray, Dylan, and JJ, her eldest son with cerebral palsy. As season 3 begins of this amusing and often unexpected comedy, the family – along with JJ’s, aide Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough) – head to London to meet up with Maya’s long-estranged father, Martin, to ask him to help them in their time of need. Will they even reconcile? Maya grapples with the fact her children are growing up fast and JJ will be heading off to college soon, leaving her a lot more free time on her hands to focus on Ray and Dylan.

** As Captioned Live **

>>> HELLO WORLD. WHAT IS UP? WELCOME TO BUILD. HERE LIVE AT THE BUILD STUDIO IN NEW YORK CITY. OUR NEXT GUEST, YOU'VE SEEN ON SUCH SHOWS AS THE GOLD BIGGER'S AND OF COURSE RENO 911. AND YOU'VE HEARD HIM IN OTHERS. AND CURRENTLY HE IS KENNETH ON THE HIT SHOW "SPEECHLESS." YOU ARE CORRECT TO BE EXCITED. AND THE GREAT CEDRIC YARBROUGH IS HERE. FIRST WE HAVE A PEEK OF THE SHOW. LET'S RUN THAT CLIP.

>> HOW COULD YOU LET HIM TAKE YOUR CHAIR?

>> HE WON IT FAIR AND SQUARE.

>> WHAT DID THAT DUMB GAME MATTER TO YOU SO MUCH?

>> I WANT TO DO THINGS BY MYSELF.

>> YOU'VE BEEN DOING TONS BY YOURSELF. THE IEP, THE ZIPPER, PLUS YOU REALLY MADE ZIPPER HAPPEN AS AN INSULT. BUT IT CAN'T ALL HAPPEN AT ONCE. YOU HAVE TO BE PATIENT. ALL I'VE EVER BEEN IS PATIENT. . JJ, I GET IT. BUT LISTEN MAN, HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS. WHAT YOU DID TODAY, IT IS JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE STUPID. YEAH. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY DISABILITY. YOU JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHEN TO STOP. YOU'RE MOVING, FAST. BUT WE ALL NEED TO KNOW OUR LIMITS. CAN YOU HELP ME GET MY CHAIR BACK.

>> YEAH. I CAN DO BUSINESS WITH THE JANITOR. I KNOW HIS PRICE.

>> LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE GREAT CEDRIC YARBROUGH IS RIGHT HERE.

>> HI, HOW ARE YOU. THIS IS GREAT.

>> THIS IS GREAT THAT YOU'RE HERE. WELCOME.

>> THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

>> AND CONGRATULATIONS, SEASON THREE HAS JUST KICKED OFF. WE'RE A COUPLE EPISODES IN. I'M SO EXCITED THAT YOU ARE HERE TO TALK ABOUT THIS. HOW IS LIFE RIGHT NOW?

>> THIS IS PRETTY COOL. I DON'T COME OUT TO NEW YORK VERY OFTEN. SO TO BE HERE IS ALWAYS REALLY GREAT. WE SHOOT IN L.A. SO I'M MORE OF A WEST COAST GUY NOW. FROM MINNEAPOLIS, BUT THIS COLD WEATHER, MAN -- LIKE I'M CRACKING AND PEELING.

>> IT WILL DRY YOU OUT.

>> YEAH. BUT IT IS GOOD TO BE HERE.

>> DRY SKIN ASIDE, IT IS GREAT TO HAVE YOU AND YOU LOOK FANTASTIC.

>> BESIDES YOUR REPTILIAN FACE, NO. GOOD TO BE SEEN.

>> I'M GETTING A LOT OF VIBES AND NONE ARE REPTILIAN. AND WE TRY TO KEEP IT HUMAN IN THE STUDIO.

>> OH, GOOD.

>> YEAH, A SAUNA HERE. SO SEASON THREE, SO EXCITING. A LOT OF STUFF CHANGING UP ON THE SHOW. I MEAN SLOWLY CHANGING, BUT CHANGING. I THINK THE SHOW IS GROWING ESPECIALLY KENNETH'S RELATIONSHIP WITH JJ. I'M EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT ALL OF THAT, BUT KIND OF TAKE ME BACK FOR A SECOND AND LET'S START REALLY EARLY. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THIS? BECAUSE BEFORE I KNEW WHAT THE SHOW WAS ABOUT AND I SAW YOU WERE ON IT, I WAS LIKE I'M IN, THERE IS CEDRIC. I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED STUFF YOU POP IN.

>> THANK YOU. I APPRECIATE THAT. AND JUST AS AN ACTOR, KIND OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITY NOT TO TAKE EVERYTHING, YOU KNOW. AND MAYBE PICK AND CHOOSE. AND KIND OF HAVE A BRAND AND TRY TO TAKE ON PROJECTS THAT YOU WILL APPRECIATE. AND SOMETHING MAMA WILL APPRECIATE SOMETIMES, YOU KNOW. OR YOUR COMMUNITY THAT WILL REALLY GO YOU KNOW WHAT, I LIKE YOU IN THAT, I REALLY ENJOYED WHAT YOU DID WITH THAT. THIS PROJECT CAME ALONG AND I READ THE SCRIPT AND I WAS LIKE IF WE CAN MAKE -- IF THEY CAN MAKE A CHARACTER THAT IS DISABLED BUT THREE DIMENSIONAL, LIKE SOMEBODY THAT YOU ACTUALLY WOULD KNOW, YOU KNOW, AND THIS BLACK MAN IS THE VOICE OF IT? THAT IS WAY COOL. LIKE I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE. AND I REALLY WANT TO BE A PART OF THAT PROJECT. PLUS I HAD KNOWN SCOTT SIVERLI, WHO IS THE CREATOR AND HIS REP  -- HIS REPUTATION AND WHAT HE'S DONE WITH OTHER SHOWS, NAMELY FRIENDS. SO HE -- YOU KNOW, HE WAS A BIG CHAMPION OF ME AND SOME OF MY WORK. AND I REALLY WANTED ME A PART OF IT. AS SOON AS I READ THE SCRIPT, I CAME IN AND AUDITIONED AND HE WAS LIKE YOU'RE THE GUY I WANT, I WAS THE FIRST ONE CAST. AND I GOT TO DO A LOT OF CHEMISTRY READS WITH EVERYONE WHEN WE WERE FILMING THE SHOW.

>> AND ONE OF THE REALLY -- AND WE GET TO SEE A LOT OF IT IN THE CLIP. ONE OF THE SPECIAL THINGS ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JJ IS THAT YOU ARE HIS VOICE FOR THAT SHOW. AND THAT IS A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY AND, ALSO I HAVE TO IMAGINE THAT IT IS DIFFERENT FROM ANY ROLE THAT YOU'VE KIND OF TAKEN BEFORE. SO TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU WERE THINKING GOING INTO THAT AND HAVING TO EMBODY THAT SIDE OF IT.

>> YEAH, THAT WAS A LITTLE DAUNTING BECAUSE THERE IS A RESPONSIBILITY THERE. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE DISABLED COMMUNITY HASN'T REALLY BEEN REPRESENTED IN TELEVISION OR MOVIES AT ALL. YOU KNOW, JUST A HANDFUL, A COUPLE HERE OR THERE, BUT NOT VERY MANY. AND SO I'VE KNOWN SOME PEOPLE WITH CEREBRAL PALSY, BUT NOT -- YOU KNOW, PEOPLE I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH, NOT THE INS AND OUTS OF SOMEONE THAT WOULD HELP SOMEONE THAT WAS DISABLED. AND SO I GOT TO MEET AN AMAZING PERSON NAMED EVA SWEENEY. ARE THEY SHOOTING? DID ANYONE FEEL THAT? OKAY. WAS IT JUST ME?

>> NO, WE'RE GOOD.

>> ALL RIGHT. WE'RE DONE.

>> ALL RIGHT. WE'VE REACHED HIS LIMITS. NO, SO WE GAVE SOME GORGEOUS STREET SIDE STUDIO IN NEW YORK CITY. ONE OF THE PARTS OF BEING IN NEW YORK CITY IS YOU'RE IN NEW YORK CITY. AND SO OCCASIONALLY --

>> THERE IS SOMEONE URINATING. BETTER EFFECT. OKAY.

>> YOU GOT THAT, CONSTRUCTION, YOU GOT IT ALL. SALT OF THE EARTH REALLY.

>> NICE. A PIZZA RAT THERE. PERFECT. ALL RIGHT. ANYWAY, SO I GOT TO MEET THIS AMAZING PERSON NAMED EVA SWEENEY WHO HAS CEREBRAL PALSY AND DOES COMMUNICATE WITH HER AID WITH A HAT AND LASER AND AROUND HER APARTMENT. AND IN HER HOME, THERE ARE THESE COMMUNICATION BOARDS AND SHE COMMUNICATES. THAT'S THE WAY THEY DO IT. AND SO I GOT TO MEET HER AND ASK A TON OF QUESTIONS. AND SHE WAS EXTREMELY OPEN ABOUT HER DISABILITY, ABOUT DATING, ABOUT RACISM IN THE COMMUNITY OF DISABLED PEOPLE. AND IT WAS FASCINATING. AND I GOT TO DO A LOT OF MY RESEARCH THROUGH THAT. AND ONCE I SPOKE WITH HER, I REALLY FELT PREPARED TO TAKE ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

>> THE SHOW DOES A BEAUTIFUL JOB EVEN AGAIN IN THAT JUST THAT ONE CLIP, THAT GREAT MOMENT OF IT IS BECAUSE YOU'RE STUPID. SHOWING JUST PEOPLE BEING PEOPLE HONESTLY IS WHAT IT IS. THE DISABILITY IS SECONDARY TO THE STORY. IT IS MORE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS. AND YOU SPENT WITH THE KIDS, JUST THE NATURE OF THE ROLE. WORKING WITH ALL THESE YOUNG ACTORS, DO YOU FEEL INFORMED LIKE IN THE LOOP ON THINGS, DO YOU FEEL REALLY OLD NOW? I KNOW I WOULD.

>> YEAH, IT IS LIKE A SECOND HIGH SCHOOL OR JUNIOR HIGH SOMETIMES. LIKE OH, MAN, I'M NOT COOL GUY WITH THESE PEOPLE. DAMN IT. I BLEW IT. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN. BUT YEAH, IT IS INTERESTING. MASON COOK WHO PLAYS RAY, THE MIDDLE GUY THERE, AND THEN KYLA KENNEDY WHO YOU MIGHT KNOW FROM "THE WALKING DEAD," SHE DID A REALLY COOL STINT ON THAT SHOW. THOSE GUYS, THEY ARE REALLY WEIRD YOUNG ADULTS, YOU KNOW. THESE GUY GROW UP SO FAST ON TELEVISION, BUT THEY ARE JUST SUCKING UP SO MUCH INFORMATION FROM ALL OF US. BUT THEY ALSO HAVE THIS LIKE OLD SPIRIT ABOUT THEM AS WELL. LIKE ALL RIGHT, YOU'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE KIND OF THING. BUT LIKE YOU SAID, IT DOES KEEP YOU YOUNG AND I DON'T CARE SHOES LIKE THAT, YOU'RE YOUNGER THAN ME.

>> WELL, NOT BY MUCH.

>> I'VE GOT OLD MAN SHOES.

>> NO, THOSE ARE REALLY NICE SHOES.

>> THEY ARE ORTHOPEDIC.

>> SO ARE THESE. I JUST HID IT INSIDE. I'M ON THE CUSP.

>> GOTCHA.

>> THIS IS BORDERLINE BETWEEN COOL AND TRYING TOO HARD. I'VE GOT LIKE A DAY LEFT IN ME AND THEN I HAVE TO SWITCH OVER.

>> I TRIED SOMETHING WITH THE MAROON SOCKS.

>> RADICAL WITH THE MAROON SOCKS. IT IS WORKING.

>> THEY WILL CLAP ABOUT MAROON SOCKS.

>> WELL, IF YOU ASK NICELY. THEY ARE A VERY KIND AUDIENCE. WELL, I'M REALLY -- WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP, ESPECIALLY AS THE SHOW IS STARTING TO MOVE FORWARD, WE START TO SEE A LITTLE BIT OF THIS. KENNETH AND JJ'S RELATIONSHIP IS DEFINITELY ABOUT TO CHANGE. HE IS GETTING READY TO GO TO COLLEGE. THAT WILL MEAN A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT EXPLORING THESE CHARACTERS IN A DIFFERENT WAY EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE ONLY IN SEASON THREE, BUT HERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THEM DOWN ANOTHER ROAD?

>> DEFINITELY. LAST SEASON IT WAS A HARDER SEASON. IN THE SHOW THEY LOSE THE HOUSE, THE FINALE IS THAT THEY ARE ON -- THEY ARE SLEEPING OUTSIDE ON THEIR FRONT YARD. BUT THEY DO END UP GETTING THEIR HOME BACK. JJ GETS LEFT BACK A YEAR BECAUSE HE WANTS TO PREPARE FOR COLLEGE. HE REALIZES THAT HE IS REALLY NOT READY. SO THIS YEAR IS THAT GETTING PREPARED FOR COLLEGE. AND SO A LOT OF IT WAS -- DO YOU REMEMBER THE SHOW GOOD TIMES? IT WAS NOT THAT BAD, NOT JJ, YOU KNOW, ALMOST GETTING SHOT BAD OR JAMES DYING KIND OF BAD.

>> OR MAYBE IT WAS. I DON'T KNOW. WE HAVE TO TUNE INTO FIND OUT.

>> OR IT IS. BUT WE EXPLORE A LITTLE MORE FUN THIS YEAR. BUT LIKE YOU WERE SAYING, KENNETH AND JJ'S RELATIONSHIP IS CHANGING. KENNETH ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT HE WOULD, YOU KNOW, BE HIS AID THROUGH SCHOOL, THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL, AND THEN THEY WOULD PART WAYS. SO THAT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE. AND WE HAVE A REALLY AMAZING CHRISTMAS EPISODE WHERE JJ WANTS TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE COFFEE FOR HIMSELF. AND WE GO THROUGH A REAL HEART-TOUCHING SCENE WITH KENNETH AND JJ AND REALLY REALIZING YOU KNOW WHAT, THIS IS COMING TO AN END. THIS IS CHANGING. AND KENNETH HAS ALWAYS BEEN KIND OF A CHARACTER WHO HAS TRIED TO -- HAS BEEN TRYING TO FIND HIMSELF. HE WAS A COLLEGE PLAYER WHO PLAYED BALL WHO TOOK BRIBES AND DIDN'T FINISH HIS EDUCATION BUT DECIDED TO GO ON ANOTHER PATH OF WORKING AT A SCHOOL AND BEING A GROUNDSKEEPER. THEN FOUND JJ AND REALLY FOUND WHAT HE IS REALLY GOOD AT, AND THAT IS MOTIVATING SOMEONE AND HELPING THEM OUT. BUT HE REALIZES THAT THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE HERE FOREVER. AND HE IS GOING AWAY. AND SO IT IS REALLY, REALLY GREAT SCENES, SOME GREAT SCENES. AND VERY HARD TO DO BY THE WAY. WHAT YOU SAW IN THE CLIP, IT IS ME READING THE COMMUNICATION BOARD. BUT I'M NOT ACTUALLY READING THE BOARD, I'M ACTUALLY DOING BOTH -- IN A WAY BOTH ROLES IN THAT I HAVE TO MEMORIZE HIS LINES, PRETEND LIKE I'M READING AND THEN ALSO DO MINE AS WELL. SO IT IS LIKE IF WE WERE DOING THIS INTERVIEW AND YOU'D BE LIKE OH, HOW ARE YOU, CEDRIC? I'M DOING GREAT. MY SHOES ARE BLUE AND A LITTLE TRYING HARD. YES, THEY ARE TRYING HARD. SO IT IS LIKE A BASIC HUGE MONOLOGUE FOR ME TO BE DOING SCENES.

>> CAN I ASK YOU SOMETHING?

>> YEAH.

>> I'M IMPRESSED WITH HOW WELL YOU REMEMBERED ---LIKE I GAVE HIM THE LINES LIKE TEN MINUTES BEFORE WE GOT OUT HERE AND IT IS A TESTAMENT TO YOUR WORK.

>> I'M AN ACTOR.

>> YOU TRULY ARE. YOU MENTIONED THE CHRISTMAS EPISODE. AND THERE IS ANOTHER ANGLE ON THAT THAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT, BUT WE JUST GOT ANOTHER FANTASTIC HALLOWEEN EPISODE WHICH I LOVE. I LOVE WHEN A SHOW EMBRACES THE HOLD DAYS AND GIVES US SOMETHING. IT IS SOMETHING TO COME BACK TO OVER THE YEARS.

>> AND WHICH I LIKE THAT AS WELL, BUT I ALSO LOVE THAT IT PUSHES THE SHOW FORWARD WHERE IT IS NOT JUST THAT HALLOWEEN, BUT IT ALSO HELPS WITH THE PROGRESS OF THE SHOW.

>> AND IT IS NOT AFRAID TO HAVE FUN WITH IT. IF WE CAN GET THE PICTURES FROM LAST YEAR, THIS WAS PHENOMENAL. THE BENJAMIN BUTTON.

>> AND MICHAEL JACKSON. YEAH. YEAH. WE GOT A LITTLE BIT OF "THIS IS IT."

>> YEAH, TOOK ME A SECOND.

>> THE OLDER MICHAEL AND THEN BLACK AND WHITE -- BLACK OR WHITE.

>> SMOOTH CRIMINAL OF COURSE.

>> AND LET'S FIND WHO APPEARS TO BE ONE OF THE YOUNGEST PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM AND SEE IF THEY CAN IDENTIFIED ONE OF THESE MICHAEL JACKSONS. YOU WANT TO FEEL OLD, YOU PLAY THAT GAME. RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHICH MICHAEL JACKSON IS ON THE BOTTOM ROW. DO YOU WANT TO VENTURE A GUESS? HOW OLD ARE YOU? 24 AND WE HAVE AN EXCUSE. WHO THINKS THEY KNOW? BOTTOM ROW. THIS ONE, WHO CAN GIVE ME THIS ONE? THAT IS THRILLER MICHAEL JACKSON, OF COURSE. AND WHAT ABOUT RIGHT HERE? WHAT ABOUT THIS ONE? WHO CAN GET A LOOK AT THAT ONE? THE SEQUIN STRIPE, BLACK UNIFORM. THIS IS A TOUGH ONE. SMOOTH CRIMINAL? NO, THAT IS RIGHT HERE. I KNOW IT IS TOUGH FOR YOU GUYS TO SEE. NOBODY CAN GET IT. DO YOU REMEMBER IT? MOON WALK. NO, BUT GOOD FOR TRYING. ANY GUESS HERE ON THE GREEN COUCH? NO, EVEN OLDER. THINK ORIGINAL. WHO SAID IT. ROCK WITH YOU? BOOM. HOW OLD ARE YOU? 28. GOOD JOB. THIS IS BRILLIANT. WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS?

>> SCOTT, WHO CREATED THE SHOW. BUT HE CAME UP WITH -- HE SAW MY INSTRAGRAM ALREADY. SO HERE IS THE THING. I OWN THAT COSTUME.

>> THE ROCK WITH YOU COSTUME.

>> YEAH, THAT IS ACTUALLY MINE. I WENT AS MICHAEL A COUPLE YEARS AGO. AND SO WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT OUR WRITER, THEY WILL GO TO OUR INSTRAGRAMS AND BRING UP WHAT WE HAVE IN OUR PERSONAL LIFE AND PUT IT ON THE SHOW. SO HE KNEW THAT I WAS A BIG FAN OF HIS AND I LET THEM BORROW MY COSTUME FOR ME ON THE SHOW. BUT YEAH, SO THIS WAS A FUNNY IDEA. AND I GOT BROWNER AND BROWNER THROUGHOUT THE EPISODE WHICH WAS ALSO REAL FUN. BUT WE HAVE SUCH A GREAT MAKEUP STAFF AS WELL.

>> WHERE DO YOU FALL IN THE HALLOWEEN, ARE YOU MORE SPOOKY, MORE FUN?

>> I'M MORE FUN. I'M NOT LIKE BLOOD -- I LIVE ALONE, MAN. I DON'T NEED GHOSTLY IMAGES AND -- I DON'T NEED ALL THAT STUFF. I SCARE EASY.

>> I DON'T KNOW -- THIS NEXT IMAGE I PULLED, IT IS NOT EVEN HALLOWEEN RELATED, BUT I HAD TO BRING IT UP BECAUSE THIS WAS AMAZING TO ME THIS IS ANOTHER POST THAT YOU HAD. THIS BLEW ME AWAY.

>> YEAH, I WAS THE FIRST BLACK GENIE. BEFORE WILL SMITH, I GOT TO DO IT. I WAS THE GUY. SO CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE, THIS IS CIRCA 2001. THIS IS BEFORE RENO 911. I GOT A JOB AT CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE DOING THE GENIE. THEY WERE DOING THE ALLADIN SHOW, IT WAS TWO HOURS OF PROSTHETIC PIECES AND AIR BRUSHING ME BLUE. BLUE IN CREVICES AND PLACES THAT --

>> DIDN'T WASH OFF DID IT?

>> NO, IT HANGS AROUND FOR A WHILE. AND THE FUNNY THING ALSO, I HAD THIS JOB AND RENO 911 ALSO WAS HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME. SO I KEPT MY GENIE JOB ON WEEKENDS BECAUSE I JUST WASN'T SURE IF RENO WOULD BE A HIT. SO I WAS DOING THE FIRST SEASON OF RENO AND THEN DOING THAT ON THE WEEKENDS. AND I COULD HAVE SWORN I OVERHEARD SOMEONE GO HEY DAD, RENO 911 GUY AS I-OF-YOU -- I WAS LIKE OKAY, I THINK I'M SAFE. SO I CAN QUICK THAT JOB.

>> THANKS FOR PULLING THAT UP.

>> YEAH, THANKS, GUYS.

>> I FIGURED YOU POSTED IT ON INSTRAGRAM, SO --

>> BUT THAT WAS LIKE A WHILE AGO. YOU REALLY WENT IN IT THE DEPTH.

>> I DID GO DEEP. AND ALSO WHEN YOU POST IT, YOU POST IT AND GO ON WITH YOUR DAY.

>> YEAH, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT IT WOULD FOLLOW ME TO NEW YORK.

>> SORRY ABOUT THAT. WELL, I SINCERELY APPRECIATE YOU SHARING THAT MOMENT WITH US EVEN THOUGH I KIND OF FORCED YOU TO DO IT. SPEAKING OF RENO, I'M A HUGE FAN OF RENO AND I SAW YOU POST -- I DIDN'T PULL THIS, BUT YOU MENTIONED THAT NIECY NASH IS COMING UP --

>> YEAH, A DIFFERENT HOLIDAY EPISODE.

>> AND ANYTIME I SEE ANYONE FROM RENO THAT GRAVITATES BACK TOGETHER FOR A MOMENT, IT MAKES ME SO GIDDY INSIDE. AND WE'VE HAD WENDY ON THE SHOW AND YOU ARE ON THE SHOW OCCASIONALLY AS WELL. HOW OFTEN ARE YOU ALL RUNNING INTO EACH OTHER, IS THERE IS A GROUP TEXT WHERE THE RENO PEOPLE KEEP IN TOUCH?

>> THERE IS A GROUP E-MAIL THAT WE DO KEEP IN TOUCH. I JUST FACE TIMED WITH TOM. HE WAS IN MINNEAPOLIS, MY HOME STATE. BUT I MEAN, I'M SO PROUD OF HER. SHE IS A POWERHOUSE AND EVERYONE HAS GONE ON TO AMAZING CAREERS. AND FOR US TO DO A REUNION SHOW WOULD BE PRETTY SPECTACULAR. PAUL RUDD CAME OUT OF THERE. THE PEELE BOYS WERE SO THAT SHOW. NICK SCHWARTZ. THEY WERE ALL CRIMINALS ON THE SHOW. AND TO HAVE THEM COME BACK ON WOULD BE REALLY COOL.

>> IT WOULD BE SO COOL. AND YOU'VE DONE -- I ALWAYS LOVE SEEING YOU POP UP IN STUFF. I REMEMBER SEEING YOU IN CURB. YOU WERE GREAT IN THE BOSS. LIKE WHENEVER YOU GET A CHANCE TO WORK WITH OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE LIKE EXPERT IMPROVISERS OR TRADE IN THAT SAME CRAFT, ONE, WHAT IS THAT LIKE FOR YOU TO GET TO WORK WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE USED TO DOING IT AT THE SAME LEVEL THAT YOU WERE? BECAUSE YOU WERE JUST CHURNING THEM OUT. YOU WERE IMPROVISING DAY IN, DAY OUT. AND IT IS LIKE A MUSCLE. THE MORE YOU DO IT, YOU -- THE FASTER YOU CAN BE. SO WHAT IS THE SITUATION LIKE RENO VERSUS ELSEWHERE. WAS THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE?

>> YEAH, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A SHOW FOR THE STAGE. IMPROV SHOW FOR THE STAGE. BUT RENO WAS THAT THING THAT, YOU KNOW, YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE FUNNY RIGHT AWAY. IT WAS A SLOW BURN KIND OF FUNNY. YOU COULD HAVE A COUPLE TAKES TO MESS UP TO IMPROVE UPON SOMETHING, YOU KNOW. IMPROV SHOW, YOU HAD TO CHURN THAT FUNNY OUT RIGHT AWAY. BUT LIKE YOU SAID, YOU SAID SOMETHING ABOUT CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. THAT WAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN THAT THEY GAVE YOU LITTLE SLIPS OF PAPER ABOUT WHAT THEY KIND OF WANTED THE SCENE TO GO. RENO WAS REALLY RENEGADE. JUST OKAY, SOMEONE IS MASTURBATING ON AN ESCALATOR, GO. THAT WAS IT. IT WAS REALLY JUST -- YOU DIDN'T EVER KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. AND THAT IS ALSO WHAT MADE THAT SHOW FRESH, IT MADE IT LOOKS LIKE COPS, MADE IT LOOKS LIKE, OH, WOW, THESE GUYS -- THAT PERSON IS REALLY MASTURBATING ON AN ESCALATOR.

>> AND MAYBE YOU GET TO PLAY AROUND A LITTLE BIT, BUT PROBABLY TO A LETTERS DEGREE HERE. A LOT OF GREAT WRITERS ARE ON THIS SHOW. YOU'RE STILL TRYING TO SCRATCH THAT ITCH, STILL WORKING ON THAT PART OF YOU?

>> YEAH, I HAVE A SHOW CALLED THE BLACK VERSION IN L.A. AND WHAT WE DO, IT IS AN AMAZING GROUP OF IMPROV ACTORS, ALL AFRICAN-AMERICAN. PHIL LAMAR FROM -- WHAT IS THAT SAM MOVIE WITH SAM JACKSON? PULL -- PULP FICTION, THANK YOU. HE IS GREAT AS WELL. ORIGINALLY THE PEELE BOYS WERE WITH US. AND THEN THEY WENT ON TO BECOME UNBELIEVABLY FAMOUS HUMAN BEINGS. BUT WHAT WE DO, WE GET A MOVIE TITLE FROM THE AUDIENCE. WE SAY SHOUT OUT A MOVIE. ANYONE. OKAY. BACK TO THE FUTURE. WE IMPROVISE THE BLACK VERSION OF BACK TO THE FUTURE. SO IT WOULD BE BLACK TO THE FUTURE PROBABLY. SO WE DO THAT FOR THE FIRST ACT AND SECOND ACT ARE THE DVD EXTRAS. WE'LL DO LIKE A DELETED SCENE, A SONG THAT DIDN'T MAKE THE BLACK TO THE FUTURE SOUND TRACK. BUT WE'VE DONE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. THAT ONE WAS CALLED WHY YOU EATING PEOPLE. WE JUST DID THE BLACK VERSION OF UP. OURS WAS CALLED SETUP. WE'VE DONE MY FAIR LADY. OURS WAS CALLED SHE'S ALL RIGHT. SO WE'VE DONE THAT FOR THE LAST SIX, SEVEN YEARS NOW. AND PEOPLE LOVE DOING THAT SHOW. SO DOING STUFF LIKE THAT HELPS KEEP ME SHARP AND READY TO DO A SHOW LIKE THAT WHERE I CAN SOMETIMES DO SOME IMPROV ON "SPEECHLESS" AS WELL.

>> SO WHEN THAT CALL COMES IN FOR THE 911 REUNION, YOU WILL BE READY.

>> I'LL IMPROVISE MY -- COME ON. WHAT'S UP, WHAT'S UP, NIECY, WHERE YOU BEEN? YOU DOING CLAUSE?

>> AND THIS IS AMAZING BY THE WAY. I WANT TO GO TO THE AUDIENCE BECAUSE WE HAVE QUESTIONS. I PROMISE THAT WILL HAPPEN. BUT YOUR VOICEOVER WORK. YOU ARE AN INCREDIBLE VOICEOVER TALENT. BOJACK OF COURSE, PARADISE PD RECENTLY.

>> YEAH, AND STARTED BOONDOCKS.

>> YEAH. SO GOOD.

>> OH, YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT. COLONEL H. STICK IN THE HOUSE. OKAY, THAT HURTS. I HAVEN'T DONE THAT IN A WHILE.

>> STILL GOT IT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HOW DID YOU GET PULLED INTO THAT WORLD? SAME THING THAT GOVERNS YOUR DECISION FOR LIVE ACTION STUFF, PUSHING YOUR BOUNDARIES?

>> THAT IS A PRETTY INTERESTING STORY IN THAT I WAS A BIG FAN OF THE COMIC STRIP AND SOME OF THE BOOKS THAT HE HAD DONE. AND I HAD HEARD THAT HE WAS HAVING THE BOONDOCKS DECISION. WENT IN FOR THIS CHARACTER DRESSED VERY MUCH LIKE -- DAMN IT, WHAT HAPPENED? I'VE TURNED INTO TOM. SO I WENT IN DRESSED LIKE THIS. AND GOING TO THE AUDITION, AARON IS THERE, A COUPLE OTHER PEOPLE ARE THERE. AND I'VE GOT MY WORDS ALL MEMORIZED, READY TO GO. GO IN THE AUDITION. AND THEY ARE ALL LIKE THIS IN THE AUDITION WHILE I'M DOING MY THING. THEY ARE ALL LIKE OKAY, GO AHEAD. YEAH. RIGHT. DO IT ANOTHER TIME. ONE MORE. LIKE THAT. GO AHEAD. AND I DID. AND I'M LIKE -- I LEFT THE ROOM AND I'M LIKE WHOA -- RUDE --

>> YOU CAN SAY IT.

>> I'M GIVING MY SHAKESPEARIAN -- I'M READY, I'M GOING. SO MY AGENT WHO I DON'T HAVE ANYMORE DIDN'T TELL ME THAT IT WAS AND AN ANIMATED SERIES. BUT I STILL GOT THE JOB. BUT I WAS REALLY PROUD OF THAT SHOW, WHAT IT SAID POLITICALLY, COMEDICALLY. YEAH, THAT WAS JUST A REALLY FUN GROUNDBREAKING SHOW THAT I WISH COULD COME BACK AND DO ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE.

>> YEAH, IT WAS INCREDIBLE. SAFE TO SAY THAT YOUR VOICEOVER TALENTS, YOUR FIRST GIG WAS ON RENO 911 WITH THAT LITTLE TURTLE?

>> YEAH, THAT WAS PROBABLY. BUT AS A KID, I WAS A BIG FAN OF CARTOONS. PARTICULARLY SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK WAS THE STUFF. YOU GUYS ARE BABIES, SO YOU DON'T KNOW. DO YOU KNOW SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK?

>> A COUPLE NODS.

>> AMAZINGLY SPOKEN BY JACK SHELDON, WHO IS A JAZZ MUSICIAN WHO HAD THIS REAL COOL KIND OF VOICE, YOU KNOW. THAT VOICE, THAT GUY'S VOICE WAS JUST AS SMOOTH AND WEIRD AND -- I'M JUST A PILL. HE WAS JUST REAL COOL WITH IT.

>> THAT IS --

>> AND I THOUGHT LIKE WHO IS THAT? I REMEMBER THINKING AS A KID LIKE WHO IS THAT? THAT IS SOME COOL BLACK DUDE THAT I GOT TO CHECK THIS OUT. AND IT WAS JUST SOME COOL WHITE GUY. AND I WAS LIKE WHAT? YOU CAN DO THAT WITH YOUR VOICE? THAT IS SO COOL. THAT WHOLE GENRE MADE ME THINK OF -- IT MADE ME WANT TO GET IN TO VOICEOVER WORK AS A KID. SO THAT WAS A HUGE INFLUENCE ON ME.

>> AND I HAVE A MILLION AND ONE MORE QUESTIONS, BUT I PROMISED THE AUDIENCE. THIS IS THE FIRST ONE RIGHT ON THE GREEN COUCH.

>> I'M A BIG FAN OF THE SHOW. THE SECOND I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A DISABLED CHARACTER, I WAS SO EXCITED. BUT I NOTICED THAT YOUR CHARACTER AND MAYA, I LOVE THE INTERACTIONS. EVERY TIME YOU INTERACT ON THE SHOW, I DIE OF LAUGHTER. SO I WAS WONDERING ARE THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ALL OF YOU GUYS THE SAME ON AND OFF THE SET OR IS THERE SOMETHING DIFFERENT? HOW IS THAT?

>> YEAH, I CAN'T STAND MINNIE DRIVER -- NO. SHE IS REALLY WONDERFUL. ESPECIALLY THE FIRST SEASON OF THE SHOW. YOU GET CAUGHT UP IN LIKE OH, I GOT TO ACT WITH HER AGAIN. BECAUSE SHE IS GORGEOUS AND SHE'S GOT THIS, YOU KNOW, BEAUTIFUL ACCENT THAT YOU ARE LIKE -- YOU'RE TRANSFIXED.

>> DO YOU EVER DO HER VOICE IN FRONT OF HER?

>> NO, I'VE NEVER DONE THAT.

>> WELL, SHE WATCH THIS IS SHOW, SO NOW SHE'S HEARD IT.

>> OH, GREAT. I SOUND LIKE THAT? ALL RIGHT BLACK MAN. LET'S DO IT. LET ME MIMIC YOU. THAT IS PROBABLY EXACTLY WHAT SHE'LL SAY. BUT NO, OUR RELATIONSHIP OFF CAMERA IS NOTHING LIKE THAT. SHE IS REALLY SWEET, REALLY WARM. HUGE MUSICAL THEATER NUT LIKE I AM. AND SO WE DO A LOT OF SINGING ONSET WHICH I THINK THAT WE'LL DO A MUSICAL VERSION OF "SPEECHLESS" THIS SEASON.

>> THE UNDER ONE ROOF THING WAS GREAT THAT YOU DID.

>> YEAH, UNDER ONE ROOF, THAT WAS -- IF YOU ARE A FAN OF '80s SITCOMS --

>> SPOT ON.

>> YEAH. AND IF YOU TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO DO A DUET WITH MINNIE DRIVER, I WOULDN'T HAVE BELIEVED YOU.

>> A GREAT QUESTION. ONE MORE FROM RIGHT HERE.

>> THE QUESTION IS, YOU TALK ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY ON THIS ROLE. HOW DOES THIS ROLE DIFFER FROM SOME OF THE ROLES THAT YOU'VE BEEN IN?

>> WELL, I HAD NO RESPONSIBILITY WITH THE OTHER ONES. YEAH, I CAN PLAY AN IDIOT COP, THAT IS FINE. IT IS DIFFERENT IN THAT LIKE I LIKEN TO SOME STORIES WHEN I SPEAK TO OLDER BLACK FOLK WHERE LIKE MY MOM, MOM'S AGE, WHERE SHE GREW UP IN THE '50s, '60s, AND THEY WOULD GATHER AROUND ONE TV ALL OF THEM AND THEY HEARD THAT JAMES BROWN IS GOING TO BE ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW. AND SO THEY ALL FLOCKED TO SEE THIS GUY. AND THIS GUY WAS BLACK AND BEAUTIFUL AND KILLING IT ON STAGE. AND IT INSPIRED THEM. IT MADE THEM LIKE OH, MY GOD. WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO THAT. THAT'S WHAT I FEEL ABOUT THIS SHOW WHERE KIDS ARE FINALLY BEING REPRESENTED THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. JUST ON MY FLIGHT HERE, I MET THIS KID NAMED NICK AND HIS FATHER. NICK HAS CEREBRAL PALSY. LOVES THE SHOW. AND IS INSPIRED BY IT. HE WANTS TO BE AN ACTOR. AND HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO IT, YOU KNOW. BECAUSE MICHAEL FOWLER IS KILLING IT ON THE SHOW. AND THAT IS THE TYPE OF RESPONSIBILITY I FEEL FOR THE SHOW, THAT YOU SHOULD BE A GOOD REPRESENTATIVE OF -- IF YOU CAN. AND SPEAK ABOUT INCLUSION. BECAUSE EVERYONE WANTS TO BE REPRESENTED. EVERYONE WANTS TO BE SEEN AND HEARD. AND I FEEL LIKE THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SHOWS THAT ACTUALLY DOES THAT.

>> IT DOES THAT AND IT IS JUST ALSO -- WHILE IT DOES THAT, IT IS ENTERTAINING AND A FANTASTIC SHOW AND IT IS FUNNY AND JUST A GREAT SHOW. I WANT TO THANK YOU -- FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUESTIONS AND THANK YOU FOR BEING A WONDERFUL AUDIENCE AND CLAPPING FOR MAROON SOCKS AND KNOWING WHAT SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK WAS AS WELL. AND THANK YOU FOR COMING AND HANGING OUT WITH US AND ALL THE GREAT STUFF YOU'VE BEEN DOING. IT IS SO AWESOME TO HAVE YOU HERE AND CONGRATS ON ANOTHER GREAT SEASON OF THE SHOW. AND "SPEECHLESS" IS AIRING FRIDAYS 8:30 P.M. ON ABC. PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER AND MAKE A CRAZY AMOUNT OF NOISE. THANKS CEDRIC YARBROUGH.
