Kiernan Shipka Discusses Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Kiernan Shipka) as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

>>> HEY, EVERYONE. WELCOME BACK TO BUILD. I'M YOUR HOST, BRITTANY JONES-COOPER. TODAY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE NEW NETFLIX SERIES "THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA.” THIS ADAPTATION OF THE SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH IS A DARK COMING OF AGE STORY THAT SHOWS SABRINA TRYING TO RECONCILE HER DUAL NATURE. HALF WITCH AND HALF MORTAL WHILE STANDING IN FRONT OF EVIL FORCES THAT THREATEN HER AND HER FAMILY. TODAY I’LL BE JOINED BY ACTRESS KIERNAN SHIPKA WHO PLAYS SABRINA. FIRST LET'S CHECK OUT A CLIP.

>> THEY'RE COMING TO GET YOU, BARBARA.

>> THE ONLY PERSON YOU WILL SCARE IS YOURSELF.

>> GOT YOU.

>> GO NIGHT.

>> GOOD NIGHT, SABRINA. \M\M

>> IN THE TOWN OF GREENDALE, WHERE IT ALWAYS FEELS LIKE HALLOWEEN, LIVED A GIRL WHO WAS HALF WITCH, HALF MORTAL WHO ON HER 16th BIRTHDAY WOULD HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN TWO WORLDS. THE WITCH WORLD OF HER FAMILY AND THE HUMAN WORLD OF HER FRIENDS. \M HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET SIXTEEN\M

>> THAT GIRL IS ME. \M\M

>> SABRINA, ARE YOU READY TO FOLLOW THE PATH OF NIGHT? [CHANTING]

>> I CAN'T DO THIS.

>> YOU MUST. \M\M

>> YOU'RE GOING TO DIE, HALF BREED.

>> GIRLS.

>> GIRLS.

>> LET'S NOT BE CATTY BITCHES, HUM? \M IT'S JUST THAT YOU HAVE GROWN UP BEFORE MY VERY EYES \M

>> YOU'RE A REBEL. THAT'S HOW I LIKE MY WITCHES. \M\M

>> I'M NOT AN EVIL PERSON. BUT THESE ARE DESPERATE TIMES. \M HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET 16\M \M\M

>> MY NAME IS SABRINA SPELLMAN. I WILL NOT SIGN IT AWAY.

>> WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO THE HONORS?

>> WITH PLEASURE.

>> RISE, RISE, RISE! \M SWEET 16\M

>> WHERE IS AUNT HILDA. SHE ANNOYED ME, SO I KILLED HER AND BURIED HER IN THE YARD.

>> PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR KIERNAN SHIPKA. THAT TRAILER IS AMAZING. IT'S LIKE THE PERFECT WAY TO EASE INTO THE SPOOKY SEASON I THINK.

>> TOTALLY. I THINK MY GRANDMA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HALF THE VIEWS ON YOUTUBE. I'VE ALSO WATCHED IT A COUPLE TIMES. ITS GREAT!

>> I GOT TO SEE THE FIRST FOUR EPISODES, I WAS TELLING YOU IN THE BACK I LOVE IT. I WAS A FAN OF THE COMEDY VERSION THAT I GREW UP WATCHING, SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH. YOU HAD TO FLIP THIS AND THEY DID IT.

>> THIS IS SUCH A DARKER TAKE, AND THE TWO SHOWS ARE DIFFERENT SHOWS. IT'S IN NO WAY A REBOOT OR A REMAKE OF THE OLD SHOW. IT'S WAY DARK. IT'S SUPER SCARY. IT GOES THERE. IT GETS REALLY INTENSE.

>> WHAT I LOVED, TOO, IS THAT IT'S IN THE SAME WORLD AS RIVERDALE. I SAW THAT RIVERDALE'S CREATOR THOUGHT OF YOU FOR RIVERDALE AND THIS OPPORTUNITY SEEMED TO BE A BETTER FIT FOR YOU. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE FOR YOU TO BE BROUGHT ON THIS PROJECT?

>> IT ALL HAPPENED REALLY QUICKLY AS A LOT OF THINGS DO. ROBERTO SAID HE WAS INTERESTED IN ME, I MET WITH HIM. WE HAD AN AWESOME MEETING. IT WAS GREAT. I AUDITIONED FOR THE SHOW TWO TIMES, AND WAITED WHAT FELT LIKE AN AGONIZING ETERNITY, BUT REALLY IT WAS TUESDAY TO FRIDAY. THEN IT WAS AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT THAT I GOT THE SHOW. WHAT DID YOU AUDITION WITH FOR THIS ROLE?

>> I AUDITIONED WITH THE SCENE WHERE I TOLD HARVEY I'M A WITCH IN THE FIRST EPISODE, THEN I TAKE IT BACK. AND THEN I AUDITIONED AS WELL WITH ANOTHER SCENE THAT IN NO WAY IS IN THE-- IN THE SHOW. IT WAS JUST WRITTEN FOR AUDITION IN A WAY.

>> THE SCENES THAT YOU DO THERE'S SO MANY INTENSE SCENES. HOW FUN IS IT TO DIG INTO THIS SPOOKY DARK SIDE? YOU'VE DONE SOME SPOOKY FILMS IN THE PAST.

>> THIS ONE IS FUN, IT'S CLASSICAL HORROR. THERE'S A LOT OF MONSTERS, DEMONS, SCARES. ALL SORTS OF THINGS. IT'S BEEN SO FUN. YOU FELL LIKE YOU'RE IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT BUT AT THE SAME TIME YOU FEEL LIKE YOU KIND OF GET TO EXPERIENCE THE SCARY WILDER THINGS. LIKE A DEMON CHASING YOU IN THE WOODS. WIN-WIN. NO, IT'S BEEN FUN. ALSO IT IS JUST SUCH A PHYSICALLY INTENSE JOB, TOO. THERE'S A LOT OF NIGHT WORK. A LOT OF NIGHT SHOOTS. LIKE COME THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, WE'RE PROBABLY STARTING OUR DAYS AROUND 4:00 P.M. AND WE'RE ENDING WHEN THE SUN COMES UP. SO IT IS A REALLY CRAZY SCHEDULE. BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT'S NEVER NOT ENTERTAINING. YOU NEVER EVEN THINK OF, LIKE, FALLING ASLEEP OR GETTING TIRED. YOU'RE JUST RUNNING. SCARED. ALL THE THINGS.

>> HAVE YOU BECOME A COFFEE DRINKER?

>> I HAVE, UNFORTUNATELY. I STICK WITH MY MACHA AS MUCH AS I CAN, BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT GIVES ME LESS JITTERS. BUT I ALSO DABBLE. I HAVE THESE CHOCOLATE THINGS. THEY'RE LIKE A CHOCOLATE-- LIKE A REESE'S PEANUT BUTTERCUP, BUT INSTEAD OF PEANUT BUTTER, THEY'RE FILLED WITH A COFFEE COCOA THING. IT'S PERFECT. IT'S COFFEE, CHOCOLATE, MCT OIL.

>> I LOVE IT. TOTALLY ON THE MACHA TRAIN.

>> WE'LL NEVER HOP OFF THE TRAIN.

>> TAKE ME THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE FOR YOU. YOU'RE THE LEAD IN THIS SHOW. HOW DIFFERENT IS THAT FOR YOU? YOU'RE IN ALMOST EVERY SCENE?

>> IT'S AN INTENSE EXPERIENCE. DEFINITELY THE MOST CHALLENGING PROJECT I'VE DONE. IT'S-- WE WORK FIVE TO SIX DAYS A WEEK. IT'S COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY LIKE A JOY. BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT'S HARD. IT'S A HARD JOB. IT'S DEMANDING. BUT I ALWAYS SAY THERE'S NO OTHER THING THAT I WOULD RATHER EXHAUST ME THAN BEING ON THIS SHOW. I JUST-- IT'S SUCH-- IT'S A SATISFYING FUN FEELING TO FEEL TIRED. YEAH, WE JUST DID SOMETHING AMAZING. NOW I'LL SLEEP THE ENTIRE WEEKEND. SO MY FRIENDS SOMETIMES DON'T-- I HAVE A LOT OF UNREAD TEXT MESSAGES ON MY PHONE BECAUSE I'M ALL OVER THE PLACE. AT THE SAME TIME IT'S SO FUN.

>> WHEN THE SHOW COMES OUT, THEY'LL SEE WHAT YOU WERE DOING.

>> YEAH. THAT'S THE OTHER THING. IT'S NICE. IT'S FUN PEOPLE ARE FINALLY GETTING ABLE TO SEE IT WE'VE BEEN WORKING SO HARD ON IT. IT'S GOING TO BE SO FUN.

>> THE CAST IN THIS IS SO MUCH FUN. WE HAVE SOME FAMILIAR FACES LIKE THE AUNTS, HILDA AND ZELDA. SALEM IS THERE. BUT SOME NEW BLOOD, I LOVE THE COUSIN AMBROSE.

>> ISN'T HE AWESOME?

>> CHANCE IS SO FUN. HE'S THE BEST. I BOOKED SABRINA THEN I GOT TO DO CHEMISTRY READS WITH A LOT OF OTHER CHARACTERS. I REMEMBER THE SECOND I DID THE CHEMISTRY READ WITH CHANCE, I WAS LIKE THAT'S OUR AMBROSE. HE HAS SO MUCH FUN ON SET. HE'S JUST-- HE ASSUMES THE ROLE SO PERFECTLY. HE IS THAT CHARACTER. IT'S AMAZING. HE IS SO GOOD. IT'S JUST SUCH A FUN ADDITION. IT'S SO GREAT THAT SABRINA HAS A CONFIDANT, SOMEONE IN THE HOUSE THAT SORT OF CONSPIRES WITH HER TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. HE DEFINITELY ENABLES HER IN A LOT OF WAYS, AS FAR AS SPELLCASTING IS CONCERNED. IT'S FUN TO HAVE SOMEONE FORWARD THINKING. ALL THAT FUN STUFF.

>> ALSO FOR YOU ON SET, I THINK OF PROBABLY YOUR MADMEN DAYS WHEN YOU WERE THE ONLY KID AROUND, NOW YOU'RE SURROUNDED BY PEERS, PEOPLE YOUR AGE. THE SET MUST BE MORE FUN BECAUSE YOU CAN HANG OUT WITH CO-STARS.

>> IT'S SUCH A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE. I WAS LIKE THIS IS WHAT ALL THE ADULTS FELT LIKE. WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD I WAS ON A TELEVISION SHOW THAT NO CHILD CARED ABOUT. NOW THAT I'M 19, ALL MY FRIENDS ARE EXCITED ABOUT A SHOW, WHICH IS COOL. THE FANS FOR THE SHOW HAVE ALREADY BEEN SO AWESOME AND RAD. WE GET SO EXCITED ON SET BY ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF. IT'S JUST SO NICE TO SHARE A PROJECT WITH AN AGE GROUP AROUND. YOU KNOW, SIMILAR TO ME. IT JUST FEELS GOOD. I WILL WATCH THE SHOW, I HAVE. BUT I WOULD BE WATCHING THE SHOW EVEN IF I WASN'T RIGHT THERE.

>> YOU WEREN'T ON THE POSTER?

>> YEAH, IF I WASN'T STARING AT MYSELF NOW.

>> ONE THING I THINK PEOPLE WILL LOVE THE SHOW IS BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH REFLECTING WHAT IS GOING ON SOCIALLY IN OUR CULTURE. SO, SABRINA IS VERY MUCH A WOKE WITCH.

>> SHE IS SUCH A WOKE WITCH.

>> SO WOKE.

>> YOU HAVE TO TRADEMARK THAT.

>> HASHTAG WOKE WITCH.

>> WOKE WITCH. BRITNEY SAID IT FIRST. SHE IS REALLY. YOU SEE IT IN HER HUMAN LIFE. IN SCHOOL, IN HER SCHOOL REALLY FIGHTING FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND HER FRIENDS. WAS THAT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO HAVE A CHARACTER WHO IS SPEAKING TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN SOCIETY?

>> TOTALLY. I THINK AT END OF THE DAY I'M ALWAYS GOING TO BE DRAWN TO CONTENT, THAT'S INHERENTLY FEMINIST. JUST THE FACT THAT A YOUNG GIRL IS BEING PORTRAYED ON TELEVISION WITH DEPTH AND DIMENSIONS AND MAKING CHOICES FOR HERSELF, FIGURING THINGS OUT. THAT'S INHERENTLY POSITIVE. I THINK IT'S AN ADDITIONAL PLUS THAT SABRINA HERSELF IS ACTIVE IN FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE. SHE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT GIVING PEOPLE THE RIGHTS THAT THEY DESERVE AND DOESN'T LIKE UNFAIRNESS. IT DOESN'T RESONATE WITH HER. SHE DOES SOMETHING ABOUT IT. AND SHE CREATES WICKS AT HER SCHOOL WITH HER TWO BEST FRIENDS. THAT IS SO COOL AND REFLECTIVE OF THE YOUTH AND BEING SO ACTIVE IN POLITICAL CHANGE. IT'S REALLY WHAT A LOT OF YOUNG AMAZING PEOPLE ARE UP TO NOW. I'M GLAD THAT IS ACTUALLY BEING SHOWN ON TELEVISION.

>> AND THE WRITING IS SO ON POINT. EVEN WHERE THEY HAVE AUNT ZELDA AND HER KIND OF COMMITMENT TO THE PATRIARCHY OF THE WITCHES WORLD. SHE IS LIKE FOLLOWING THAT STRAIGHT AND NARROW PATH. SABRINA IS CHALLENGING HER TO BE LIKE WHY DO I NEED TO GIVE UP MY NAME? IT'S WOVEN INTO THE WITCH WORLD AS WELL. THAT WAS SMART.

>> IT'S SO RELATABLE. BESIDES THE FACT IT'S ABOUT WITCHCRAFT, IT'S SO RELATABLE. ALL THE THINGS THAT SABRINA IS GOING THROUGH, ALL THE INDIVIDUALIZATION SHE'S DEALING WITH AS FAR AS HER FAMILY GOES, I FEEL LIKE MOST TEENS WILL BE ABLE TO TOTALLY SEE THEMSELVES IN THAT SITUATION AND THAT CHARACTER TO A CERTAIN EXTENT.

>> ARE YOU INTO SPOOKY THINGS? I WILL SAY I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS TO WATCH THE SHOW. I DIDN'T KNOW HOW SCARY. IT WASN'T TOO SCARY FOR ME WHICH IS GOOD. ARE YOU INTO THAT SORT OF--

>> I'M INTO IT. I LOVE IT BRING IT ON. I'M PRETTY HARD TO SCARE. I'M LIKE GIVE ME IT. I LOVE THE FEELING OF BEING SCARED, IT'S SO RARE FOR ME.

>> DO YOU EVER GET SCARED ON SET?

>> NO IT'S LIKE YOU SEE THE DEMON CHASING YOU, AND HE'S AT CRAFT TABLE GRABBING A BANANA TO HOLD HIM OVER TO LUNCH. SO IT REALLY DEFLATES ALL KINDS OF POTENTIAL SCARINESS WHEN YOU JUST ARE LIKE TALKING TO JUST CRAZY LOOKING GOBLINS ALL DAY.

>> ARE YOU A HALLOWEEN PERSON?

>> I AM.

>> ARE YOU DRESSING UP THIS YEAR? I WANTED TO DO THE SPICE GIRLS WITH A SLEW OF THE CAST. I THINK WE'RE WORKING. I DON'T KNOW IF WE'LL GET TO IT. ONE DAY, THAT'S THE DREAM.

>> I LOVE THAT THERE'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE A COUPLE SABRINAS OUT THERE AT HALLOWEEN.

>> RIGHT? I'M ALREADY SEEING SWEATERS. AND THE WHOLE THING. SO EXCITING.

>> THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SABRINAS OUT THERE.

>> AND HER THREE SCHOOLMATES.

>> TOTALLY.

>> I SAW ONE EPISODE THAT YOU SING.

>> I DO. YEAH. EPISODE FOUR.

>> ARE WE GOING TO SEE MORE SINGING?

>> I DON'T KNOW, BECAUSE ROBERTO IS INTO DOING MUSICAL EPISODES, LOVES THAT STUFF. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT WILL HAPPEN ON THIS SHOW OR NOT. BUT THERE IS-- THERE ARE A LOT OF SONGS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW. IT WAS SO FUNNY I PRERECORDED THE SONG, I GOT THERE ON SET. IN THE REHEARSAL I JUST SANG IT. THEY SAID YOU'LL LIP-SYNC ALONG TO IT. OH, YOU CAN ACTUALLY-- DO YOU WANT TO DO IT? I WAS LIKE YEAH, I GUESS SO. MAYBE. SO I DID NOT KNOW I WOULD BE DOING A LIVE PERFORMANCE THAT DAY. NOW I'LL GO IN MORE ARMED AND READY IF THAT HAPPENS AGAIN. IT WAS FUN.

>> THEATER SOMETHING YOU WOULD WANT TO DIVE INTO AND DO A MUSICAL?

>> I GREW UP AS A KID DOING MUSICAL THEATER. THAT WAS WHERE I FOUND ALL MY FRIENDS GROWING UP. ESPECIALLY NOT GOING TO SCHOOL IN A TRADITIONAL SETTING. MOST OF MY FRIENDS ARE MUSICAL THEATER FRIENDS. YOU NAME IT, I WAS IN THAT PRODUCTION AT SOME POINT.

>> ANOTHER THING I LOVE ABOUT SABRINA IS THAT IT IS MODERN, LIKE IT'S IN TODAY BUT ALSO THIS RETROCITY. EVEN THE FASHION IS A LITTLE KICKBACK. THEY KIND OF GO TO PAY PHONES, THINGS LIKE THAT. HOW FUN IS THAT TO PLAY WITH? THERE'S NO OVERRELIANCE ON TECHNOLOGY IN THIS SHOW.

>> IT'S FUN. IT MAKES EVERYTHING-- I LOVE IT. AT THE SAME TIME WE'RE NOT PORTRAYING A SPECIFIC ERA. RESPONSIBILITY OF MAKING CERTAIN REFERENCES TO A CERTAIN TIME AND CULTURE. IT FEELS LIKE IT'S IN THIS BUBBLE, WHICH IS NICE. IT'S PRETTY COOL NOT TO BE USING TECHNOLOGY IN THE SHOW. TO A CERTAIN EXTENT YOU COULD BE LIKE, WELL, COULDN'T THEY TAKE A PHOTO OF IT WITH THEIR PHONE? IT ADDS THIS LEVEL OF CONVENIENCE THAT YOU DON'T WANT THE CHARACTERS TO HAVE FOR STORY LINE PURPOSES. YEAH. IT IS REALLY GREAT. I LOVE IT. I WOULD WANT TO SEE WHAT SABRINA'S TWITTER FEED WOULD BE. I JUST WOULD. I'M VERY TEMPTED TO MAKE INSTAGRAMS FOR ALL THE CHARACTERS, JUST HAVE THEM.

>> YOU TOTALLY SHOULD. HERS WOULD BE PHOTOS OF SALEM.

>> TOTALLY.

>> HARVEY.

>> PROUD CAT MOM.

>> YOU'RE SAYING THIS, SOMEONE IS ON IT.

>> I HOPE SO. THAT WOULD BE AMAZING, AS LONG AS THEY SHARE THE PASSWORD WITH ME SO THEY CONTRIBUTE.

>> I'M SURE RIVERDALE FANS WANT TO KNOW, WILL THERE BE A CROSSOVER?

>> I HAVE NO INFLUENCE OVER THIS WHATSOEVER, BY THE WAY. RIVERDALE AND GREENDALE ARE NEXT TO EACH OTHER. SO MUCH STUFF IS HAPPENING IN EACH DOWN SEPARATELY. THEY'RE ACTION PACKED CRAZY TOWNS. HOW THE HECK WILL THEY NOT RUN INTO EACH OTHER WITH THEIR SHENANIGANS. HONESTLY BOTH SHOWS ARE SO TOTALLY DIFFERENT, FOR IT TO WORK-- I GET SO RILED UP BECAUSE I'M A BIG RIVERDALE FAN, BUT I THINK ONE OF THEIR CHARACTERS WOULD HAVE TO COME TO OUR SHOW OR VICE VERSA. I DON'T THINK IT COULD AB BIG MASH-UP. BUT IF ARCHIE GETS LOST ON HIS MORNING JOG OR WHATEVER, YOU KNOW, THAT WOULD BE GREAT, RIGHT?

>> CAR BREAKS DOWN. CAN'T GET HOME.

>> TOTALLY INTO IT. SABRINA CAN COME TO THE RESCUE.

>> LOVE IT. I'M SURE THE FANS OF BOTH SHOWS WOULD TOTALLY STAND FOR IT.

>> I'M INTO IT.

>> I'M INTO IT. TOO.

>> LET'S GO TO THE AUDIENCE REALLY QUICKLY.

>> YEAH.

>> I HAVE A QUESTION. FROM YOUR “MAD MEN” DAYS. I REMEMBER READING COVERAGE OF EVENTS, AND WHERE THEY WOULD TALK ABOUT BEST DRESSED. THEY WOULD TALK ABOUT YOU AND SAY HER DRESS WAS A LITTLE BIT RISQUE, BUT SHE DID WEAR FLATS. I THOUGHT, MY GOSH, SHE'S 10 YEARS OLD. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO BE UNDER THAT MUCH SCRUTINY AT 10. I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT FOR MYSELF OR MY TWO DAUGHTERS. I WONDERED HOW YOU HANDLED THAT.

>> IT'S INTERESTING. I FELT LIKE I STAYED PROTECTED. I'M LUCKY THAT I HAD WONDERFUL PARENTS THAT WERE-- I'M SURE YOU'RE A WONDERFUL MOTHER AS WELL, THAT PROTECTED ME. TO A CERTAIN EXTENT YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE. YOU CANNOT MAKE THAT YOUR MISSION. THAT'S JUST GOING TO DRIVE YOU ABSOLUTELY NUTS. SO FOR ME IT WAS ABOUT JUST HAVING ENOUGH SEPARATION FROM THE INDUSTRY AND HAVING A REAL CHILDHOOD IN A LOT OF WAYS THAT FELT LIKE IT DIDN'T HAVE TO DO WITH GOING TO EVENTS OR DOING ANYTHING LIKE THAT. THAT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME FROM MY FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE AND YEARS. AS FAR AS FASHION GOES, I MEAN, I ALWAYS FELT SORT OF MY AGE. I LOVED TO DRESS UP, BUT I NEVER WAS IN SOME KIND OF HURRY. I'M LUCKY THAT I NEVER FELT PRESSURED TO BE IN A HURRY. AT THAT POINT IF YOU HAVE THE MENTALITY OF THIS IS WHAT I'M DOING, I'M CONFIDENT IN IT, YOU JUST TRY TO MAINTAIN THAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, NOT LET THE NOISE GET TO YOU TOO MUCH. I'M LUCKY. I HAD A GREAT UPBRINGING. I HAD FUN FRIENDS. A NICE EXPERIENCE WITH “MAD MEN” BECAUSE IT FILMED TEN MINUTES AWAY FROM MY HOUSE. WHEN I WASN'T WORKING ON IT, I WAS HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS, DOING MUSICAL THEATER, TENNIS, TAE KWON DO, JUST GETTING UP TO NORMAL KID SHENANIGANS. WHICH I KNOW IS NOT THE CASE FOR EVERYONE WHO IS GROWING UP IN THIS SORT OF WORLD. BUT FOR ME IT WAS ESSENTIAL.

>> THAT'S SO NICE TO HEAR YOU SAY. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR PARENTS MADE SURE YOU HAD THAT GROUNDING.

>> THEY'RE CHILL. LOVE THEM.

>> GOOD FOR YOU.

>> YEAH.

>> HI. I'M SABRINA.

>> I KNOW. I SEE. I SAW THAT SWEATER FROM A MILE AWAY.

>> I'M ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO HAVE IT.

>> NO WAY, REALLY?

>> YES.

>> THAT'S AWESOME. LOOKS AMAZING.

>> I'M REAL EXCITED TO HEAR YOUR TAKE ON SABRINA. I WAS A ORIGINAL FAN OF SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH SERIES. DID YOU TAKE ANY INSPIRATION FROM MELISSA JOAN HART?

>> IT WAS REALLY COOL. I GOT THE ROLE IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR. AND WE DIDN'T START FILMING UNTIL MARCH. IT'S RARE TO HAVE THAT MUCH TIME BEFORE YOU START FILMING SOMETHING. ROSS GOT IT THE DAY BEFORE. I HAD THREE MONTHS TO PREPARE. THEY GAVE ME THE FIRST TWO SCRIPTS TO WORK ON. SO BASICALLY I WAS WORKING WITH MY ACTING COACH THREE TIMES A WEEK. STUDYING THE HELL OUT OF THAT SCRIPT. CREATING HER WORLD. JUST TRYING TO GET REALLY COMFORTABLE IN HER SKIN. AND THAT WAS, LIKE, SUCH A GIFT. YOU KNOW TO HAVE THAT. SO I REALLY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME I HAD TO REALLY HUNKER DOWN AND WORK ON HER TO MAKE HER FEEL LIVED IN. BECAUSE SOMETIMES WITH THOSE FIRST EPISODES YOU ARE TRYING TO FIND YOUR FOOTING. YOU'RE TRYING TO FIND YOUR CHARACTER'S VOICE. I WANTED TO BE AS COMFORTABLE WITH HER AS POSSIBLE THAT WAY I COULD GO IN AND OTHER PEOPLE COULD GO IN WATCHING IT AND FEEL LIKE SHE WAS A DEVELOPED PERSON. SO THAT WAS AWESOME. I ALSO GOT TO DO A TON OF CHEMISTRY READS WITH EVERYONE ELSE WHICH WAS PRETTY FUN. ALSO A GREAT CHANCE TO PLAY AROUND WITH THE CHARACTER. AS FAR AS THE '90s SHOW. I NEVER WATCHED IT. THEN I GOT TOO DEEP INTO THIS VERSION, AND I DIDN'T WANT TO-- I WAS SO, LIKE, JUST HEAD FIRST INTO THIS SABRINA. BUT I THINK OVER MY HIATUS THAT MIGHT HAVE TO BE THE FIRST THING I WATCH.

>> DO IT.

>> I THINK I MIGHT.

>> IT'S MORE LIKE A SITCOM. THIS ONE I'M EXCITED ABOUT BECAUSE IT'S MORE DARK.

>> TOTALLY. TOTALLY. THEY'RE TOTALLY DIFFERENT SHOWS AS FAR AS I CAN GATHER. BUT, YEAH, THIS ONE MORE LEANS INTO THE WITCHY SORT OF COVEN ASPECT. THERE ARE WAY MORE WITCH CHARACTERS IN THIS SHOW THAN MORTAL CHARACTERS.

>> I THINK THE ORIGINAL COMIC WAS A LITTLE DARKER, MORE--

>> THE 2014 ONE.

>> YEAH.

>> IT'S TOTALLY IN THE SAME VIBE.

>>> WOULD SAY THAT-- I'M A BIG FAN OF BOTH. BUT THE SABRINA THAT YOU KNOW AND LOVE IS STILL THERE, WHERE SHE CARES ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE. SHE'S CONSTANTLY LOOKING AFTER PEOPLE AROUND HER.

>> SALEM IS THERE. DON'T WORRY.

>> THIS IS WAY DARKER AND WAY MORE FUN.

>> YES.

>> NEXT QUESTION?

>> HELLO.

>> HI. HOW IS IT GOING?

>> GOOD. I WANTED TO SAY FIRST OF ALL I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE FIRST EPISODE AT COMIC CON. I LOVED IT.

>> THAT'S SO AWESOME.

>> MY QUESTION WAS COMPARED TO RIVERDALE, YOU KNOW HOW THEY HAVE A THEME FOR EACH SEASON? WILL SABRINA HAVE THAT INCORPORATION? OR WILL BE AN OVERALL THE OF SABRINA TRYING TO HANDLE HER LIFE?

>> THAT'S A COOL QUESTION. WE'RE FILMING SEASON TWO RIGHT NOW. WHAT I WOULD SAY IS THAT RIVERDALE MIGHT HAVE A MORE OF A VERY, VERY, VERY SPECIFIC THEME THEY TACKLE. BUT BOTH THE FIRST SEASON AND THE SECOND SEASON BOTH HAVE THEMES THAT ARE REALLY STRONG AND REALLY DIFFERENT. LIKE, FILMING THE SECOND SEASON, IT'S SO FUNNY. I'VE BEEN WATCHING A LOT-- I STUCK AROUND FOR THE FIRST EPISODE, I WAS LIKE, MY GOD, THAT WAS SO LONG AGO THAT FEELS SO DIFFERENT. YOU SEE THE CHARACTERS GROW AND CHANGE AND TACKLE DIFFERENT OBSTACLES. I WOULD SAY THAT, LIKE, THE SEASON-- THE FIRST SEASON KIND OF RAMPS UP TOWARDS THE END. BY EPISODE SEVEN YOU'RE LIKE, ALL RIGHT, LET'S WATCH EIGHT, NINE, TEN. THEY'RE OVER, WHAT? THAT'S HOW DID I IT. AND, YEAH. SO I GUESS WE DON'T REALLY HAVE AS SPECIFIC OF, LIKE, A MONSTER OR A GOBLIN OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT THAT WE'RE FIGHTING, BUT BOTH SEASONS ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER. I THINK THEY BOTH HAVE, LIKE, KIND OF DIRECTIONS THAT THEY GO IN. LIKE THE BEGINNING OF THIS SEASON TOTALLY MIRRORS THE END OF THE SEASON. IT'S A JOURNEY. IT'S A RIDE.

>> ONE LAST QUESTION.

>> HI.

>> HELLO.

>> FIRST I WANTED TO SAY I'M EXCITED FOR THIS SHOW.

>> YEA.

>> I WATCHED THE TRAILER SO MANY TIMES ALREADY. I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT.

>> YOU AND ME BOTH.

>> ALSO I WAS GOING TO SAY THAT YOU HAVE BEEN-- YOU HAVE DONE THINGS IN THE HORROR GENRE BEFORE. I WAS WONDERING HOW IS SABRINA DIFFERENT FROM AT THOSE OTHER CHARACTERS THAT YOU DID?

>> A MOVIE I DID CALLED BLACK COAT'S DAUGHTER WAS A BIG INSPIRATION FOR ROBERTO. WHICH WAS SO CRAZY. I SAT DOWN IN THE MEETING, HE WAS LIKE I LOVE YOU. MY MIND GOES TO “MAD MEN” AND BLACK COAT'S DAUGHTER, I WAS LIKE EXCUSE ME, YOU SAW THAT MOVIE? ROBERTO APPRECIATES CLASSICAL HORROR MOVIES. LIKE THE SHINING. WE HAD A BIG SCREENING OF LITTLE CLIPS OF MOVIES THAT THE SHOW WAS SORT OF GOING TO PAY HOMAGE TO TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. IT'S FUN. WE LEAN INTO THE CAMPINESS OF IT ALL, WHILE STILL ALSO HAVING IT BE LIKE A DRAMA THROUGH AND THROUGH. IT'S REALLY FUN TO PLAY WITH THOSE EXTRA ELEMENTS. BECAUSE IT'S KIND OF JUST LIKE WE'RE DOING THE SHOW THAT FEELS SO GOOD AND FUN AND THEN THE ADDED ELEMENT OF BLOOD EVERYWHERE. YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST LIKE A BONUS. IT'S AN ADD-ON, WHICH IS REALLY, REALLY FUN. IT MAKES IT MORE ENTERTAINING TO BE QUITE HONEST.

>> I AGREE. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SHOW, THEN YOU'RE SCARED, BUT ALSO HOPEFUL. IT'S INCLUSIVE, IT'S FUNNY. EACH EPISODE, YOU'RE LIKE I GOT FULLY ENTERTAINED.

>> RIGHT.

>> WHICH IS SO NICE AND REFRESHING.

>> ALL YOUR SENSES.

>> EVERYTHING IS ENGAGED. I'M EXCITED FOR PEOPLE TO SEE IT. IF YOU DO WANT TO SEE IT, "THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA” DEBUTS OCTOBER 26th ON NETFLIX. GIVE IT UP FOR KIERNAN.

>> THANK YOU, EVERYONE. [APPLAUSE]
