Kiernan Shipka Discusses Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Kiernan Shipka) as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

>> THIS IS SUCH A DARKER TAKE, AND THE TWO SHOWS ARE DIFFERENT SHOWS. IT'S IN NO WAY A REBOOT OR A REMAKE OF THE OLD SHOW. IT'S WAY DARK. IT'S SUPER SCARY. IT GOES THERE. IT GETS REALLY INTENSE.

I AUDITIONED FOR THE SHOW TWO TIMES, AND WAITED WHAT FELT LIKE AN AGONIZING ETERNITY, BUT REALLY IT WAS TUESDAY TO FRIDAY. THEN IT WAS AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT THAT I GOT THE SHOW. WHAT DID YOU AUDITION WITH FOR THIS ROLE?

>> I AUDITIONED WITH THE SCENE WHERE I TOLD HARVEY I'M A WITCH IN THE FIRST EPISODE, THEN I TAKE IT BACK. AND THEN I AUDITIONED AS WELL WITH ANOTHER SCENE THAT IN NO WAY IS IN THE-- IN THE SHOW. IT WAS JUST WRITTEN FOR AUDITION IN A WAY.

>> THE SCENES THAT YOU DO THERE'S SO MANY INTENSE SCENES. HOW FUN IS IT TO DIG INTO THIS SPOOKY DARK SIDE? YOU'VE DONE SOME SPOOKY FILMS IN THE PAST.

>> THIS ONE IS FUN, IT'S CLASSICAL HORROR. THERE'S A LOT OF MONSTERS, DEMONS, SCARES. ALL SORTS OF THINGS. IT'S BEEN SO FUN. YOU FELL LIKE YOU'RE IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT BUT AT THE SAME TIME YOU FEEL LIKE YOU KIND OF GET TO EXPERIENCE THE SCARY WILDER THINGS. LIKE A DEMON CHASING YOU IN THE WOODS. WIN-WIN. NO, IT'S BEEN FUN. ALSO IT IS JUST SUCH A PHYSICALLY INTENSE JOB, TOO. THERE'S A LOT OF NIGHT WORK. A LOT OF NIGHT SHOOTS. LIKE COME THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, WE'RE PROBABLY STARTING OUR DAYS AROUND 4:00 P.M. AND WE'RE ENDING WHEN THE SUN COMES UP. SO IT IS A REALLY CRAZY SCHEDULE. BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT'S NEVER NOT ENTERTAINING. YOU NEVER EVEN THINK OF, LIKE, FALLING ASLEEP OR GETTING TIRED. >> CHANCE IS SO FUN. HE'S THE BEST. I BOOKED SABRINA THEN I GOT TO DO CHEMISTRY READS WITH A LOT OF OTHER CHARACTERS. I REMEMBER THE SECOND I DID THE CHEMISTRY READ WITH CHANCE, I WAS LIKE THAT'S OUR AMBROSE. HE HAS SO MUCH FUN ON SET. HE'S JUST-- HE ASSUMES THE ROLE SO PERFECTLY. HE IS THAT CHARACTER. IT'S AMAZING. HE IS SO GOOD. IT'S JUST SUCH A FUN ADDITION. IT'S SO GREAT THAT SABRINA HAS A CONFIDANT, SOMEONE IN THE HOUSE THAT SORT OF CONSPIRES WITH HER TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. HE DEFINITELY ENABLES HER IN A LOT OF WAYS, AS FAR AS SPELLCASTING IS CONCERNED. IT'S FUN TO HAVE SOMEONE FORWARD THINKING. ALL THAT FUN STUFF.

>> ALSO FOR YOU ON SET, I THINK OF PROBABLY YOUR MADMEN DAYS WHEN YOU WERE THE ONLY KID AROUND, NOW YOU'RE SURROUNDED BY PEERS, PEOPLE YOUR AGE. THE SET MUST BE MORE FUN BECAUSE YOU CAN HANG OUT WITH CO-STARS.

>> IT'S SUCH A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE. I WAS LIKE THIS IS WHAT ALL THE ADULTS FELT LIKE. WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD I WAS ON A TELEVISION SHOW THAT NO CHILD CARED ABOUT. NOW THAT I'M 19, ALL MY FRIENDS ARE EXCITED ABOUT A SHOW, WHICH IS COOL. THE FANS FOR THE SHOW HAVE ALREADY BEEN SO AWESOME AND RAD. WE GET SO EXCITED ON SET BY ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF. IT'S JUST SO NICE TO SHARE A PROJECT WITH AN AGE GROUP AROUND. YOU KNOW, SIMILAR TO ME. IT JUST FEELS GOOD. I WILL WATCH THE SHOW, I HAVE. BUT I WOULD BE WATCHING THE SHOW EVEN IF I WASN'T RIGHT THERE.

WHEN I WASN'T WORKING ON IT, I WAS HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS, DOING MUSICAL THEATER, TENNIS, TAE KWON DO, JUST GETTING UP TO NORMAL KID SHENANIGANS. WHICH I KNOW IS NOT THE CASE FOR EVERYONE WHO IS GROWING UP IN THIS SORT OF WORLD. BUT FOR ME IT WAS ESSENTIAL.

>> IT WAS REALLY COOL. I GOT THE ROLE IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR. AND WE DIDN'T START FILMING UNTIL MARCH. IT'S RARE TO HAVE THAT MUCH TIME BEFORE YOU START FILMING SOMETHING. ROSS GOT IT THE DAY BEFORE. I HAD THREE MONTHS TO PREPARE. THEY GAVE ME THE FIRST TWO SCRIPTS TO WORK ON. SO BASICALLY I WAS WORKING WITH MY ACTING COACH THREE TIMES A WEEK. STUDYING THE HELL OUT OF THAT SCRIPT. CREATING HER WORLD. JUST TRYING TO GET REALLY COMFORTABLE IN HER SKIN. AND THAT WAS, LIKE, SUCH A GIFT. YOU KNOW TO HAVE THAT. SO I REALLY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME I HAD TO REALLY HUNKER DOWN AND WORK ON HER TO MAKE HER FEEL LIVED IN. BECAUSE SOMETIMES WITH THOSE FIRST EPISODES YOU ARE TRYING TO FIND YOUR FOOTING. YOU'RE TRYING TO FIND YOUR CHARACTER'S VOICE. I WANTED TO BE AS COMFORTABLE WITH HER AS POSSIBLE THAT WAY I COULD GO IN AND OTHER PEOPLE COULD GO IN WATCHING IT AND FEEL LIKE SHE WAS A DEVELOPED PERSON. SO THAT WAS AWESOME. I ALSO GOT TO DO A TON OF CHEMISTRY READS WITH EVERYONE ELSE WHICH WAS PRETTY FUN. ALSO A GREAT CHANCE TO PLAY AROUND WITH THE CHARACTER. AS FAR AS THE '90s SHOW. I NEVER WATCHED IT. THEN I GOT TOO DEEP INTO THIS VERSION, AND I DIDN'T WANT TO-- I WAS SO, LIKE, JUST HEAD FIRST INTO THIS SABRINA. BUT I THINK OVER MY HIATUS THAT MIGHT HAVE TO BE THE FIRST THING I WATCH.

>> IT'S MORE LIKE A SITCOM. THIS ONE I'M EXCITED ABOUT BECAUSE IT'S MORE DARK.

>> THAT'S A COOL QUESTION. WE'RE FILMING SEASON TWO RIGHT NOW. WHAT I WOULD SAY IS THAT RIVERDALE MIGHT HAVE A MORE OF A VERY, VERY, VERY SPECIFIC THEME THEY TACKLE. BUT BOTH THE FIRST SEASON AND THE SECOND SEASON BOTH HAVE THEMES THAT ARE REALLY STRONG AND REALLY DIFFERENT. LIKE, FILMING THE SECOND SEASON, IT'S SO FUNNY. I'VE BEEN WATCHING A LOT-- I STUCK AROUND FOR THE FIRST EPISODE, I WAS LIKE, MY GOD, THAT WAS SO LONG AGO THAT FEELS SO DIFFERENT. YOU SEE THE CHARACTERS GROW AND CHANGE AND TACKLE DIFFERENT OBSTACLES. I WOULD SAY THAT, LIKE, THE SEASON-- THE FIRST SEASON KIND OF RAMPS UP TOWARDS THE END. BY EPISODE SEVEN YOU'RE LIKE, ALL RIGHT, LET'S WATCH EIGHT, NINE, TEN. THEY'RE OVER, WHAT? THAT'S HOW DID I IT. AND, YEAH. SO I GUESS WE DON'T REALLY HAVE AS SPECIFIC OF, LIKE, A MONSTER OR A GOBLIN OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT THAT WE'RE FIGHTING, BUT BOTH SEASONS ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER. I THINK THEY BOTH HAVE, LIKE, KIND OF DIRECTIONS THAT THEY GO IN. LIKE THE BEGINNING OF THIS SEASON TOTALLY MIRRORS THE END OF THE SEASON. IT'S A JOURNEY. IT'S A RIDE.

MY MIND GOES TO “MAD MEN” AND BLACK COAT'S DAUGHTER, I WAS LIKE EXCUSE ME, YOU SAW THAT MOVIE? ROBERTO APPRECIATES CLASSICAL HORROR MOVIES. LIKE THE SHINING. WE HAD A BIG SCREENING OF LITTLE CLIPS OF MOVIES THAT THE SHOW WAS SORT OF GOING TO PAY HOMAGE TO TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. IT'S FUN. WE LEAN INTO THE CAMPINESS OF IT ALL, WHILE STILL ALSO HAVING IT BE LIKE A DRAMA THROUGH AND THROUGH. IT'S REALLY FUN TO PLAY WITH THOSE EXTRA ELEMENTS. BECAUSE IT'S KIND OF JUST LIKE WE'RE DOING THE SHOW THAT FEELS SO GOOD AND FUN AND THEN THE ADDED ELEMENT OF BLOOD EVERYWHERE. YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST LIKE A BONUS. IT'S AN ADD-ON, WHICH IS REALLY, REALLY FUN. IT MAKES IT MORE ENTERTAINING TO BE QUITE HONEST.
