The Stars And Producers Of "Empire" Give Back To The Community In Partnership With Turnaround Arts

Every artist – whether a visual artist, musician, writer or actor – can point to a mentor who inspired their love of the arts. "Empire's" Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Sanaa Hamri and Brett Mahoney are joined by Winston Cox, Director of Implementation for Turnaround Arts, to talk about the transformative power of arts – especially in education.

>> WELCOME BACK TO BUILD. I'M BRITTANY JONES COOPER. WE ARE JOINED BY SPECIAL GUESTS. WE HAVE TERRENCE HOWARD, TARAJI P. HENSON AS WELL AS EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS SANAA HAMARI AND BRETT MAHONEY. THEY’RE JOINING US TO TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS AND EDUCATION. WE’RE ALSO GOING TO BE JOINED BY WINSTON COX, DIRECTOR OF IMPLEMENTATION FOR TURNAROUND ARTS. BUT FIRST LET'S CHECK OUT A CLIP FROM "EMPIRE."

>> HEY, PUT THAT BACK. DON'T YOU TOUCH IT.

>> SHE IS HER OWN CHARACTER IN THE SHOW.

>> I WANTED TO SHOW THE ART OF "EMPIRE." I WANTED THE ART TO STAND OUT AS MUCH AS THE ACTING, FASHION, AND AS MUCH AS THE MUSIC.

>> I'M DERRICK ADAMS, VISUAL ARTIST WORKING IN MULTIMEDIA. LATE MAY I RECEIVED A CALL FROM "EMPIRE." THEY WANT TO DO A PORTRAIT OF COOKIE AND LUCIA. I WAS IMMEDIATELY ON BOARD. WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO DO THAT?

>> MY TYPICAL DAY AS AN ARTIST IS PRETTY BASIC. AFTER WALKING FROM MY OFFICE, GRABBING A COFFEE AT THE LOCAL COFFEE SHOP, TALKING TO THE NEIGHBORS.

>> THAT WAS GREAT.

>> I'M REALLY CONNECTED TO THE PEOPLE AROUND HERE. I COME INTO THE STUDIO AND IT'S EXCITING BECAUSE YOU GET TO COME IN WITH WHITE WALLS AND CREATE A WORLD. THE GOAL IS TO BRING ALL THAT IS HAPPENING IN THE SHOW THROUGH THIS OBJECT AND SEE HOW PEOPLE RESPOND TO IT BASED ON THESE TWO CHARACTERS WHO ARE BIGGER THAN LIFE.

>> A LITTLE ADVICE, BE CAREFUL WITH THOSE LINES. YOU KNOW THEY BITE.

>> IT IS INTERESTING TO TRY TO IMAGINE WHAT HIS THINKING WAS IN PAINTING LUCIUS AND COOKIE AND HOW THE GEOMETRY PLAYED TO HIS INTERPRETATION OF WHAT THEY ARE. I'M QUITE FLATTERED BY IT.

>> FOR ME IT'S THE COLORS. WARM. LOTS OF BROWNS. IT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL.

>> WHEN I LOOKED AT BOTH FIGURES, I DIDN'T IS SEE ONE BEING MORE DOMINANT THAN THE OTHER. I WANTED TO GIVE THE VIEWERS THEIR OWN PERSPECTIVE IN LOOK AGRICULTURE THE THESE TWO FIGURES. I THOUGHT SPLITTING IN HALF IS LOOKING AT THEM AS BEING EQUAL, BOTH DOMINANT IN THEIR OWN WAY. IT BROUGHT THIS IDEA THAT THEY WERE ONE BUT ALSO THEY ARE LOOKING AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, WHICH IMPLIES THEY ARE BOTH IN THEIR OWN WORLD. I WANT THEM TO GET A FEELING OF BLACK EXCELLENCE AND THE WAY I FEEL THE SHOW IS CAPTURING THIS IDEA.

>> THE BEAUTIFUL THING ABOUT THEM IS THERE'S THIS LOVE/HATE BATTLE TAKING PLACE WITH THEM. DERRICK WAS ABLE TO TAP INTO THAT.

>> EVERYONE, PLEASE PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR WINSTON COX, TARAJI P. HENSON, TERRENCE HOWARD, SANAA HAMRI AND BRETT MAHONEY. HAVING THE ART INTEGRATED INTO THE SHOW, WHY IS THAT SO IMPORTANT? WHOEVER WANTS TO TAKE THAT FIRST. I DON'T KNOW.

>> I THINK THE PRODUCERS.

>> SANAA?

>> IT ALL STARTED WITH LEE DANIELS WHO WANTED TO SHOW ART, PEOPLE OF COLOR, ARTISTS NOT REPRESENTED IN THE ART WORLD ON TELEVISION IN A GREAT WAY. WITH THAT SAID, WE DECIDED TO CURATE. WE HAVE DERRICK ADAMS. MICHELIN THOMAS, OMAR. THEY ARE FRONT AND CENTER. IT IS NOT ANCILLARY MOMENT. IT IS THE MOMENT.

>> WHY WAS DERRICK'S ART SOMETHING THAT WAS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO IN CORPORATE?

>> I THINK HE'S SUCH A PROMINENT ARTIST. AND TO HAVE HIM DO A PORTRAIT JUST LOUD IT TO CELEBRATE THEM BUT ALSO TO CELEBRATE HIS ART.

>> LET'S TALK ABOUT THE PORTRAIT. WHEN YOU SAW IT FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT DID YOU THINK? IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL AND COOL. EVERY TIME YOU LOOK AT IT YOU SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

>> MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS, DOES IT LOOK LIKE ME? BUT IT FEELS LIKE ME.

>> I CERTAINLY DRESS LIKE THAT. LOOK AT HIS SHIRT. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS, YEAH. I HAVE THE SAME COLOR EYES AS TERRENCE. IT'S CUTE. I DO SEE ME IN THERE. I LIKE HOW ITS TWO HEADS INTO ONE. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH HOW THEY OPERATE. THEY'RE ONE PERSON.

>> ALSO, NEITHER ONE IS NECESSARILY MORE DOMINANT.

>> RIGHT.

>> THEY WORKS A TEAM, A PARTNERSHIP.

>> WELL, THAT'S HOW BIG YOUR HEAD IS IN REAL LIFE, TERRENCE.

>> IT IS REALLY JUST SO POWERFUL AND STRIKING LIKE THEY ARE AS A COUPLE.

>> I DON'T WANT TO BE THE SQUARE. HE'S THE SQUARE! I'M JOKING.

>> WHAT ROLE DO ARTISTS PLAY IN SOCIETY? PEOPLE REFLECT WHAT WE SEE IN OUR OWN COMMUNITIES. WHY WAS THAT AN IMPORTANT PART? ARTISTS THAT ARE CHOSEN, THEY HAVE A MESSAGE.

>> IT IS ALWAYS A VISUALLY ARRESTING MESSAGE THAT WE DON'T SEE, NOR DOES MODERN MAINSTREAM SOCIETY ACCEPT. WE TRY TO DO WHAT'S ACCEPTABLE TO OTHER PEOPLE BUT WHAT REFLECTS US. THAT'S WHAT ART IS ABOUT, THE INNER EMOTION OF THE PEOPLE JUST LIKE MUSIC IS. LIKE MARVIN GAYE WAS FOR THE TIME. IN FACT, JUST AS IMPORTANT AS NOW.

>> I THINK THE ROLE OF THE ARTIST AS A DISRUPTOR, ANTAGONIZER IS SOMETHING THAT WE REALLY NEED AND WE'RE SADLY LACKING. SO A SHOW TO PROMOTE THE ARTIST AS DISRUPTOR, ENGAGING YOUNG PEOPLE, I THINK THAT FIRES THEIR IMAGINATION AS A POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT.

>> INDY WILEY AND MARSHALL ARE TWO THAT I HAVE FOLLOWED AND SEEN THROUGHOUT THE SHOW. I LOVE BEING ABLE TO SEE THAT AND TALK TO MY FRIENDS ABOUT IT. IT ADDS ANOTHER LAYER TO THE SHOW.

>> WITH ART REGARDING CHILDREN OR HUMAN BEINGS, PERIOD, ARTIST IS AN EXPRESSION TO ATTEMPT TO COMMUNICATE. LIKE AN CORAL SNAKE, THE ART ON ITS BODY IS SO DEFINITIVE AND TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHAT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE SNAKES ARE, WHETHER IT WILL KILL YOU, WHETHER IT WILL BE FRIENDLY. ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT THINGS. ART IS AN IMMEDIATE IDENTIFIER OF WHO AND WHAT YOU WANT TO REPRESENT. AND IT CAN CHANGE HRRB AS HUMAN BEINGS, WE CAN CHANGE OUR PERCEPTION HOW WE ARTFULLY DECORATE OURSELVES. AND YOU CAN CHANGE. LIKE MR. ROGERS. HE WOULD USE ART TO CHANGE THE EMOTION. A SMILE WHEN YOU'RE NORMALLY CARRYING A FROWNING FACE. A HELLO AND HOW YOU SAY HELLO. ART IS NOT JUST FOR THE WRITING. IT'S REALLY IN HOW YOU ARE EXPRESSING YOURSELVES. AND YOU WANT TO EXPRESS YOURSELF LIKE DA VINCI AND PICASSO. YOU WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW YOU EXIST AND THE MESSAGE YOU HAVE TO GIVE IS SOMETHING THAT'S WELCOMING.

>> SOMETHING YOU AND TARAJI AND THE REST OF THE ACTORS YOU DO EVERY DAY. YOU ARE DOING YOUR ART AND SHARING IT WITH VIEWERS. WE HAVE A BUNCH OF EIGHTH GRADERS IN THE TURNAROUND IS PROGRAM. I WANTED TO ASK YOU GUYS, WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN THE EIGHTH GRADE? WERE YOU INTO THE ARTS?

>> EIGHTH GRADE? IS THAT 14?

>> 13.

>> OH, DUH. THIS THING. YEAH, MY ACTING WAS AWAKENING FOR ME -- THE SCHOOL I WAS AT -- OH, AS A MATTER OF FACT I DID SHAKESPEARE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN EIGHTH GRADE.

>> DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT PLAY?

>> WE WERE THE THREE WITCHES. WHICH ONE WAS THAT?

>> HAMLET.

>> MACBETH. I WAS ONE OF THE THREE WITCHES. IT WAS FOR THE FOLGERS THEATER SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL. THEY WERE GIVING OUT AWARDS. IT WAS A COMPETITION. WE WERE SO GOOD. WE WERE LIKE THE ONLY BLACK KIDS THERE. WE WERE SO GOOD THEY CREATED AN AWARD FOR US THAT DAY. WE WENT BACK TO THE HOOD OUR SCHOOL WAS LIKE, WHOO! WHO IS SHAKESPEARE?

>> IN EIGHTH GRADE, WHAT WAS I DOING? I REMEMBER BEING INTRODUCED TO THE IDEA OF LIGHT AND HOW EACH COLOR OF LIGHT HAD A DIFFERENT EXPRESSION AND MEANT SOMETHING. I WAS LOOKING UP THE WAYS PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT REGIONS CALLED THE DIFFERENT COLORS TO SEE IF THERE WAS A MATCH TO IT, IF THERE WAS SOME ETYMOLOGY TO LIGHT AND COLOR.

>> YOU KNEW THAT WORD IN EIGHTH?

>> YES, I KNEW ETYMOLOGY. I WANTED TO SEE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIGHT AND COLOR, SOUND AND TONE, AND MATTER AND SHAPE AT THAT TIME. SO IT'S ALL ABOUT ART AND WANTING TO GRAB AS MANY SUPPLIES IN YOUR LIFETIME IN EVERY SITUATION SO YOU CAN CREATE A COLLAGE OF YOUR LIFE. THAT WILL BE THE ART OF YOUR LIFE. SOME PEOPLE WILL BE LIKE BOSCIOT AND SOME PEOPLE’S ART WILL BE LIKE KACZYNSKI. BUT EVERYTHING YOU DO IS A BRUSH STROKE FOR YOUR ULTIMATE LIFE MASTER PIECE.

>> DO YOU THINK THAT CREATIVITY IS SOMETHING EVERYONE HAS, OR IS IT SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE KIND OF CULTIVATED?

>> EVERYONE HAS IT. WE'RE MADE BY A CREATOR AND THE CREATION CAN ONLY IMITATE THE CREATOR. WHATEVER THE FORCE IS A CREATIVE FORCE IN EVERYTHING WE DO, IT SHOULD BE GIVING PRAISE TO BEING ALIVE AND EXPRESSING THAT SAME THING AND CREATE.

>> I THINK WHERE WE ALL HAVE IT, IT HAS TO BE NURTURED. THAT'S WHY ART IN SCHOOLS IS SO IMPORTANT. FOR THESE KIDS WHO STUMBLE UPON OR FEEL THE CREATIVITY, TO HAVE THAT NEWER CUSTOMER SUPPORTED, SO THEY CAN CONTINUE IN IT.

>> I AGREE. IT SHOULD BE WITHIN THE CURRICULUM JUST AS MUCH AS MATH IS, AS TO MUSIC, ART, YOU KNOW, AND SCIENCE IS. IT'S PART OF EVERYTHING.

>> ABSOLUTELY. WE REALLY SEE THAT IN YOUR SCHOOLS. WE SEE THE WAY THE ARTS FIRE THEIR IMAGINATION, REENGAGE THEM, REALLY CHANNEL THEM. THIS IS WHAT THEY WERE MEANT TO DO. IT'S INCREDIBLE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU REALLY NURTURE THE ARTS IN SCHOOLS.

>> NO. I WAS JUST SAYING LIKE ALL OF YOU GUYS. YOU GUYS ARE IN EIGHTH GRADE. YOU GUYS ALL HAVE THE COLOR BLUE ON. DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHADE THE COLOR BLUE IS? JUST THINK ABOUT THAT. DO YOU KNOW WHAT ELEMENT WOULD BE THE CLOSEST RELATED THING TO THE COLOR BLUE? THE COLOR BLUE WOULD MAKE THE KEY OF G. THAT'S WHAT YOU HEAR. AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE PRIME RESIDENT FREQUENCY OF NITROGEN. THAT'S WHAT THE COLOR BLUE CAN DO FOR YOU. THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS. THAT'S 192 TO 196 HERTZ. SO IN UNDERSTANDING THESE THINGS, WHEN YOU DO TAKE A PICTURE AND LOOK AT IT, YOU KNOW, IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE ART YOU CAN MANIPULATE HOW PEOPLE FEEL. NITROGEN IS IN OUR DNA. IF NITROGEN IS HIGH, EVERYBODY IS HAPPY. ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE CLOSELY RELATED. SO ART IS NOT JUST ABOUT EXPRESSING ABSTRACT IDEAS. IT'S ABOUT UNDERSTANDING HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS AS A WHOLE. AND IF YOU MASTER IT, YOU CAN MASTER THE UNIVERSE. FOR EVERY COLOR, THERE IS A SOUND. FOR EVERY SOUND, THERE IS A SHAPE. ONCE YOU FIND THE RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE ALL THE TOOLS NECESSARY TO MASTER LIFE.

>> YES. THAT'S FOR SURE. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> IT SHOWS ART INFLUENCE BUSINESS, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY. IT ALL GOES HAND IN HAND. BEFORE WE GO ON, THERE IS A CLIP FROM TURNAROUND ARTS TO PEOPLE CAN SEE WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. I THINK WE HAVE THAT CLIP READY. \M\M \M SOMETIMES I'M RIGHT, SOMETIMES I CAN BE WRONG \M MY OWN BELIEFS ARE IN MY SONGS \M \M THE BUTCHER THE BANKER, THE DRUMMER AND THEN MAKES NO DIFFERENCE WHAT GROUP I'M IN \M \M I AM EVERY DAY PEOPLE, YEAH, YEAH \M \M THERE IS A BLUE ONE WHO CAN'T ACCEPT THE GREEN ONE FOR LIVING WITH A FAT ONE TRYING TO BE A SKINNY ONE \M \M ALL DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS AND SO ON AND SO ON AND SCOOBY DOOBIE DOOBIE DOO \M \M I AM NO BETTER AND NEITHER ARE YOU WE ARE THE SAME WHATEVER WE DO \M \M YOU LOVE ME, YOU HATE ME YOU KNOW ME AND THEN YOU CAN'T FIGURE OUT THE BAG I'M IN \M \M I AM EVERYDAY PEOPLE, YEAH, YEAH \M OH SHA SHA WE GOT TO LIVE TOGETHER" \M THERE IS A YELLOW ONE THAT WON'T ACCEPT THE BLACK ONE THAT WON'T ACCEPT THE RED ONE THAT WON'T ACCEPT THE WHITE ONE \M \M ALL DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS AND SO ON AND ON ON AND SCOOBY DOOBIE DOO \M "I AM EVERYDAY PEOPLE" .

>> YEAH!

>> TURNAROUND ART. I'M GOING TO START WITH YOU. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INITIATIVES YOU BRING INTO SCHOOLS?

>> HE WE BRING A LOT OF CHANGE INTO A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT. WHEN WE PARTNER WITH A COLLECTION OF SCHOOLS WE'RE REALLY PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS IN TERMS OF ARTS INTEGRATION. HOW DO YOU USE THE ARTS IN SCIENCE, IN MATH, ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS TO REALLY CAPITALIZE AND ENGAGE STUDENT LEARNING? WE ALSO, IN THE FIRST YEAR OF TURNAROUND ARTS SCHOOL, THEY RECEIVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF ART SUPPLIES, AS WELL AS MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TO REALLY, AGAIN, TO INSPIRE THE STUDENTS, THOSE WHO WOULD PURSUE THOSE LINES. OVER TIME, WHAT WE SEE IS THE SCHOOL INCREASINGLY YOU SEE MORE AND MORE ENGAGEMENT FROM STUDENTS. AND THEY CAPTURE THEIR IMAGINATION.

>> WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE GREATEST IMPACT YOU HAVE SEEN IN STUDENTS? IS IT PERFORMANCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM, INSIDE THE CLASSROOM? WHAT IS THE REAL TAKEAWAY?

>> I THINK THE FACT THAT THEY SEE THEMSELVES IN THE CURRICULUM, THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THE HISTORY, SCIENCE, MATH, THAT THEY CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO ALL OF THOSE DISCIPLINES. AND, RIGHT, THEY ARE NOW ACTIVATED, ENABLED STUDENT. WE JUST SEE THAT LEVEL OF INSPIRATION AND COMMITMENT MOVING FORWARD INTO THE HIGHER LEVELS OF EDUCATION.

>> IS THAT SOMETHING YOU GUYS CAN RELATE TO? DID YOU HAVE ART LIKE THAT IN YOUR SCHOOL? I KNOW BUDGETS CUTS AFFECT EVERYTHING.

>> WE ARE OLD ENOUGH TO NOT HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE BUDGET CUTS. THAT'S WHERE I FOUND ART, IN SCHOOL. WE HAD TO TAKE MUSIC. I REMEMBER FIFTH GRADE. I WASN'T IN A PRIVATE SCHOOL. IT WAS JUST SCHOOL IN NORTHEAST D.C. IT DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE, KINGSMAN. I DID MY FIRST PLAY IN FIFTH GRADE. I WAS A VERY RAMBUNCTIOUS CHILD. SHE KNEW HOW TO TAME ME. MRS. LANE. I'LL NEVER FORGET HER.

>> DID SOMEBODY HELP YOU FIND OUT OR IS IT SOMETHING THAT CAME TO YOU?

>> I DON'T KNOW. I'M A LITTLE DIFFERENT. ONLY BECAUSE WHEN I SEE COLOR, I HEAR SOUND. WHEN I HEAR SOUND, I SENSE SHAPE. SO EVERYTHING HAS ALWAYS BEEN ART TO ME. THAT'S WHY I WAS ASKING THEM TO TAKE A LOOK AND SEE WHAT THEY UNDERSTAND AND NOT TO FORGET AND SAY THAT YOU MIGHT SEE THINGS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN EVERYBODY ELSE. AND IT'S OKAY TO FEEL LIKE THAT. I WAS PRETTY DISRUPTIVE TOO. BUT THEY WOULD SUSPEND ME INSTEAD OF NURTURING IT.

>> YOU HAD DIFFERENT MURALS.

>> TRANSFORMING THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT. ENGAGEMENT EVENTS. PARENTS REALLY FEMALE WELCOME. WE WANT YOU TO WALK IN, YOU SENSE CHANGE IN THAT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. OUR HALLS ARE BRIMMING WITH THAT JOY FOR LEARNING. THE THE MANY YEARS OF OBSESSION, STANDARDIZED TESTING, ALBEIT A PORTION. BUT IT HAS REALLY DONE TO TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. SOME HAVE NEEDED A REAWAKENING TO THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

>> WE'RE PUTTING SO MUCH EMPHASIS ON THE GOVERNMENT, ON OUR SCHOOLS, TEACHING CERTAIN THINGS. THE SELFISH GENE THAT RUNS IN EVERYTHING AND KEEPS EVERYTHING GOING. THAT SELFISH GENE LIVES IN YOU. AND IF YOU'RE NOT BEING TAUGHT, YOU NEED TO SEEK AND ASK AND SEEK OUT THOSE QUESTIONS BECAUSE THEY'RE NECESSARY FOR YOU TO LIVE. YOU SHOULD QUESTION EVERYTHING. DISRUPT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. QUESTION THE PLATONIC SOLIDS. DON'T ACCEPT THEM LIKE, OH, THEY HAVE BEEN HERE 6,000 YEARS. QUESTION THE REALITY THAT ALL ENERGY IN THE UNIVERSE IS EXPRESS INDEED IN MOTION. ALL MOTION IS EXPRESSED IN WAVES. SO WHERE DO THE STRAIGHT LINES COME FROM TO CREATE THE POLYGONS OR THE SHAPES IN THE PLATONIC SOLIDS MUST BE ILLUSIONS. SO YOU CAN QUESTION EVERYTHING. AND IN THE PROCESS OF QUESTIONING I BET YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WRITE TO FIND AN ANSWER. THERE IS GOING TO BE A STYLE TO YOUR WRITING, AND THAT WILL BE YOUR ART. THERE'S CURVES IN EVERYTHING. START TAKING APART EVERYTHING AND YOU WILL FIND THE ARTIST IN YOU. THAT ARTIST WILL HAVE TO EXPRESS A NEW UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU HAVE.

>> I LOVE THAT. I THINK SO QUICKLY PEOPLE ARE LIKE, WELL, I CAN'T DRIVE. I CAN'T SING.

>> PEOPLE THINK BECAUSE THEY PUT IT IN A BOOK. YOU HAVE TO SING LIKE THIS. I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE SING WITH A HOARSE VOICE. IT'S NOT HOW PRETTY YOU SOUND. I WANT TO FEEL YOU. I HAVE HEARD PLENTY OF PRETTY VOICES BUT I FELT NOTHING. I WOULD RATHER HEAR A RASPY VOICE. I WOULD RATHER FEEL YOU THAN HEAR YOU.

>> AND REALLY, BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. FOR SO LONG THE ART WAS MONOPOLIZED OF PEOPLE OF A CERTAIN TYPE OF PEOPLE WITH CERTAIN TYPE OF PERSUASION THAT SAID THIS WAS GREAT AND THIS IS WORTH $20 MILLION WHEN IN ESSENCE IT'S NOT ABOUT SOMEBODY ELSE SAYING WHAT'S BEAUTIFUL. OF ART IS WHATEVER YOU MAKE OUT OF IT. THAT'S WHY I AM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT PAINTINGS AND ARTISTS. MY FATHER WAS AN ARTIST FROM MOROCCO. I'M FROM NORTH AFRICA. I GREW UP AROUND A LOT OF PAINT AND SAW HIS STRUGGLES AS AN ARTIST TRYING TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES THAT WAS REPRESENTED BY A EUROPEAN PERSON. OR GIVING 50% OF HIS ART TO THE DEALERS IN WHICH, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE MANY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TRYING TO BREAK THROUGH THAT. WITH WHAT TERRENCE AND TARAJI ARE SAYING, WHATEVER YOU DRAW, WHATEVER YOU EXPRESS IS RIGHT.

>> AND IT'S SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE BORN WITH A TALENT. YOU DEVELOP THE TALENT. IT TAKES WORK, IT TAKES EFFORT. THAT'S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE ARTS IN SCHOOLS. BECAUSE WE CAN SEE THIS CREATIVITY, NURTURE IT, DEVELOP IT. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT ON THE FIRST TIME OUT. IT IS A TALENT YOU DEVELOP OVER TIME. LET IT GROW.

>> AND YOU HAVE HEARD THE SAYING RAW TALENT, RIGHT? THAT'S GREAT. THAT'S BEAUTIFUL IF YOU HAVE IT. BUT IT'S NOT GOING TO TAKE YOU A LOT OF PLACES IN LIFE.

>> EXACTLY.

>> THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE TO NURTURE YOUR TALENT.

>> THAT'S RIGHT.

>> WORK HARD. I NEVER STOP WORKING.

>> THE FIRST DRAFT DOESN'T GO ANYWHERE. IT'S NOT UNTIL THE SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH, FIFTH. YOU KEEP WORKING. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT. YOU JUST HAVE TO KEEP WORKING TOWARDS A GOAL.

>> HE IS A SHOW RUNNER FOR THE SHOW. HE OVERSEES ALL THE SCRIPTS THAT ARE WRITTEN, THE PLOT OF IT. SHE IS THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR WHO OVERSEES THE ENTIRE LOOK AND LOOKS AFTER ALL THE DIRECTORS THAT WORK ON THE SHOW. THEY BOTH WORK OFF THE STORY BOARD, WHICH IS CREATED BY ARTISTS, WHICH IS A CONCEPTION OF THE OVERALL ARC WHERE WE WANT TO GO WITH THE SHOW. SO IT TAKES A LOT OF INTELLIGENCE, MIXED WITH DETERMINATION AND YOUR OWN INSTINCT AND ARTISTRY. NOW, I'M GOING TO SAY SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE 13, 14, SO YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW WHEN A CHILD IS CONCEIVED, IT'S OVER 500 MILLION SPERM IN A HEALTHY MOMENT THAT IS SENT INTO THAT WOMAN. OUT OF A HALF BILLION SPERM, YOU GOT TO THAT EGG. AS A WOMAN IT WAS A 72-HOUR BLIND MARATHON. AS A MALE, IT'S 24-HOUR BLIND MARATHON. BUT YOU CRAWLED OVER YOUR OWN DEAD BROTHERS AND SISTERS, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF THEM, FOLLOWING YOUR INSTINCT. YOU DIDN'T LOOK TO THE LEFT. YOU DIDN'T LOOK TO THE RIGHT. YOU TRUSTED YOUR INSTINCT AND IT GOT YOU TO THAT EGG. I'M SAYING IF YOU CAN WIN A HALF MILLION MAN RACE TO GET TO LIFE FOLLOWING YOUR INSTINCT, IT TELLS YOU HOW POWERFUL YOUR INSTINCT IS.

>> AND IT ALSO WILL SOLIDIFIES THE FACT THAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE HERE.

>> BINGO. SO IF YOU'RE HERE, BE PROUD. IN WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING.

>> THERE WAS NO MISTAKES.

>> BEFORE WE GO TO THE AUDIENCE, TARAJI, I WANTED TO POINT OUT YOU HAVE THE HENSON FOUNDATION NAMED AFTER YOUR FATHER HELPING TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY. THERE IS AN ART COMPONENT TO THAT AS WELL WHICH I LOVE. SOME OF THE MONEY FROM YOUR RECENT FUNDRAISER WENT INTO BATHROOMS TO PUT BEAUTIFUL WORK THERE INSTEAD OF BULLYING THAT LEADS TO DEPRESSION AND STUFF.

>> WHEN I WAS GROWING UP -- IT'S BEEN A WHILE. THANK YOU, TERRENCE. THANKS. ANYWAY, THE BATHROOM WAS DAUNTING. BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU WENT IN THERE. THAT'S WHERE THE GROWN-UPS WERE NOT IN THERE. SO A LOT COULD GO IN THERE. JUMPS, FIGHT, BULLYING, PEOPLE SMOKING AND DOING THINGS THEY SHOULDN'T BE. THAT'S HOW IT WAS FOR ME GROWING UP. I DIDN'T REALLY LIKE THE BATHROOM. WERE I WAS A LITTLE SQUIRT. I WAS A SPIT-FIRE BUT I LIKED TO AVOID ISSUES. I WOULD MAKE SURE BIGGER PEOPLE WEREN'T IN THERE. WE ARE TRYING TO CHANGE THAT, MAKE IT A PLACE OF SOLITUDE WITH NICE, POSITIVE SAYINGS. THINGS TO LIFT YOU UP. CHANGE THE THE COLOR. BATHROOMS ARE SO DRAB. THEY'RE DEPRESSING ALREADY. THEY'RE EITHER GRAY OR GREEN. JUST TO PUT THE ART IN THERE TO CHANGE THE FOCUS OF THE SCHOOLS, ESPECIALLY IN URBAN COMMUNITIES.

>> DO YOU SEE THE BIGGER ISSUE OF NOT BEING ASHAMED OF THE STIGMAS OF MENTAL HEALTH.

>> THAT TOO. BUT SOMETIMES PEOPLE SEE WORDS BEFORE THEY HEAR THEM. I CAN HEAR SOMEBODY SAY BE GREAT, BE GREAT, BE GREAT. BUT I DON'T GET IT UNTIL I SEE IT. LIKE YOU SAID, IN A CERTAIN COLOR. IN A CERTAIN HUE. SOME PEOPLE, THAT'S HOW THEY RECEIVE THEIR INFORMATION. THE THING ABOUT SCHOOLS AND CHILDREN, AND TEACHING, YOU HAVE TO FIND VERY CREATIVE WAYS TO DO THAT NOWADAYS WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.

>> AND THIS IS THE ROLE LIKE OUR VIDEOS AND OUR ARTIST VISITS. THEY REALLY DRAW ATTENTION. I APPRECIATE WHAT TARAJI IS SAYING. IF WE HAVE THAT TYPE OF POWERFUL SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY, THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU ALL DRAW ATTENTION TO THE MEDIA IN SCHOOL.

>> NOW IS THE TIME TO GO TO THE AUDIENCE. WE HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS. WHO DO WE HAVE FIRST? SHE DOESN'T WANT TO GO FIRST. OKAY.

>> MY GROUP WOULD LIKE TO ASK HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT COMES ALONG WITH THE FAME?

>> I KNOW I HAVE A LITTLE HUNGRY EYES LOOKING AT ME. I'M ALSO A MOTHER. I HAVE A SON. SO I'M PRETTY MUCH A RESPONSIBLE PERSON. I KNOW I'M VERY CLEAR ON WHY I CHOSE THIS FIELD OF BUSINESS. I KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF ART, MY ARTISTRY. I KNOW I CAN CHANGE LIVES. MY SCRIPTS ARE DIFFERENT. THEY ARE FROM A PHILANTHROPIC PERCEPTION. I'M NOT AFRAID TO PLAY THE CRACKHEAD OR THE GIRL THAT WAS MOLESTED.

>> THESE ARE REAL TRUTHS THAT WILL HELP PEOPLE TO COME OUT OF THEIR SHELL AND TELL THEIR TRUTH. DID I ANSWER YOUR QUESTION? YOU CAN CLAP. YOU CLAPPED FOR HIM. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> WILL YOU REPEAT THE QUESTION BECAUSE I GOT CAUGHT UP IN WHAT TARAJI WAS SAYING?

>> I PERSONALLY THINK FAME IS UP NATURAL FOR HUMAN BEINGS. I HAVE NEVER REALLY SEEN SOMEBODY SUCCESSFULLY HANDLE IT. YOU TAKE GOOD PEOPLE AND PUT THEM IN A FAMOUS SITUATION AND THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH IT. AND YOU END UP PUTTING ON AIRS. I FIND MYSELF DOING TERRENCE HOWARD IMPERSONATIONS WITH PEOPLE I MEET THINKING I HAVE TO BEHAVE A CERTAIN WAY. YOU HAVE TO GO HOME AND HAVE A PRETTY GOOD MENTAL PICTURE OF WHO YOU ARE AND REMEMBER AT THE END OF THE DAY THAT YOU'RE NO BIGGER THAN ONE OF GOD'S CHILDREN AND NO LESS THAN ONE OF GOD'S CHILDREN.

>> AND SOMETHING MY FATHER USED TO ALWAYS SAY TO ME, IF YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, NO ONE CAN USE YOU AGAINST YOU.

>> BINGO.

>> SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO LIVE IN YOUR TRUTH. WHATEVER THAT IS. WHATEVER THAT LOOKS LIKE. DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER PEOPLE. STAY IN YOUR LANE. PUT YOUR BLINDFOLDERS ON. AS SOON AS YOU TRY TO LOOK IN SOMEONE ELSE'S LANE, YOU TRY TO GO AS FAST AS THEM. YOU TRY TO GET THE SAME CLOTHES AS THEM. YOU ARE DIFFERENT FOR A REASON. YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT MAKEUP FOR A REASON. THAT'S PRIDEFUL. HAVE PRIDE IN THAT. DON'T APOLOGIZE FOR WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU COME FROM. DO YOU HEAR THAT I'M SAYING TO YOU? DON'T EVER APOLOGIZE, OKAY? IT'S NEVER ABOUT WHERE YOU STARTED. IT'S NEVER ABOUT WHERE YOU STARTED. IT’S ALWAYS WHERE YOU'RE GOING. ALWAYS KEEP LOOKING FORWARD. DON'T LOOK BACK.

>> IS AND REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARNED IN THE WOMB, GET TO THE EGG. GET TO THE EGG. DON'T LISTEN TO NOBODY. YOU GET TO THE EGG.

>> HASHTAG GET TO THE EGG. NEXT QUESTION.

>> MY QUESTION IS WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO ACTING?

>> WE USED TO HAVE THIS TRAVELING ART GROUP THAT WOULD GO TO DIFFERENT SCHOOLS IN THE WERE URBAN AREA. I WAS FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. THEY WERE AN ACTING TROUPE. THEY WOULD PUT ON LITTLE FIVE-MINUTE PERFORMANCES. I REMEMBER GOING, I WANT TO DO THAT. I WANT TO DO THAT. I DON'T KNOW HOW I'M GOING TO DO THAT, BUT I WANT TO DO IT. AND THAT'S THE THING ABOUT HUMANS. WE INSPIRE EACH OTHER. THAT WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO TELL YOUR STORY. WHEN I BECAME AN ACTRESS, IT WAS MORE THAN JUST BEING AN ACTRESS FOR ME. I'M GOING BACK TO THE WHOLE RESPONSIBILITY THING BECAUSE WE KNOW SO MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE TALENTED. THEY HAVE TALENT OUT THE WAZOO. BUT YET THEY DON'T HAVE THE MIC. WHEN GOD GIVES YOU THE MIC, YOU BETTER HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY TO THE PEOPLE. OTHERWISE, THE MIC CAN BE TAKEN.

>> QUICK.

>> SO WE MUST UNDERSTAND IN ART, IN LIFE WE ALL HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE. I DON'T CARE WHETHER YOU'RE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, BEHIND THE CAMERA, YOU HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE IN LIFE, PERIOD. WHATEVER YOU GO INTO.

>> NEXT QUESTION.

>> WHAT ARE SOME STRATEGIES YOU USE IN ORDER TO MEMORIZE YOUR LINES?

>> WELL, BEFORE THAT I WANT TO KNOW YOUR GUYS NAMES. WHAT WAS YOUR NAME? JAKE, GOOD TO MEET YOU. VERY GOOD TO MEET YOU. NOW ASK THE QUESTION.

>> WHAT ARE STRATEGIES YOU USE IN ORDER TO MEMORIZE YOUR LINE?

>> I NEVER GO INTO IT AS I HAVE TO LEARN MY LINES. IT'S NEVER ABOUT THE WORDS. IT'S NEVER ABOUT THE WORDS. IT'S WHAT'S BEHIND THE WORDS, WHAT'S GOING ON TO MAKE YOU SAY THE WORDS. FIRST AS AN ACTOR I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT. AND YOU HAVE TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE WRITER. WHY DID THE WRITER WRITE THIS. AND I HAVE TO SAY IT LIKE THIS. SO LET ME DO MY RESEARCH AND FIGURE OUT WHERE I AM IN THE STORIES. THERE'S SO MUCH YOU HAVE TO DO BEFORE YOU EVEN GET TO MEMORIZING THE LINES. I NEED TO READ THE SCRIPTS. WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE AND WHAT ARE THEY SAYING ABOUT ME? SEE, ONCE YOU LEARN THE STORY AND YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE IN THE STORY, THE LINES WILL COME TO YOU.

>> IT DID DITTO.

>> NEVER PICK UP A SCRIPT AND SAY, MY LINES, MY LINES. BECAUSE YOU WILL CHOKE EVERYTIME.

>> NEXT QUESTION.

>> HI. MY QUESTION IS DURING THE EARLY STAGE OF YOUR CAREER AS AN ACTOR HAVE YOU FELT NERVOUSNESS OR STAGE FRIGHT AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

>> I HAVE HAD STAGE FRIGHT A NUMBER OF TIMES. BUT, AGAIN, YOU'VE GOT TO REMEMBER THAT NOTHING IN THE UNIVERSE HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. AS TARAJI SAID EARLIER, GOD PUTS YOU HERE FOR A REASON. SO THE MOMENT THAT YOU REALIZE, OH, WELL, I GUESS I'M SUPPOSED TO BE NERVOUS RIGHT HERE, THE MOMENT YOU RECOGNIZE, OH, I'M NERVOUS AND YOU SAY IT'S OKAY TO BE NERVOUS, YOU GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO BE A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE. BECAUSE I PROMISE YOU NOTHING LOOKS MORE UNNATURAL THAN AN ATTEMPT TO LOOK NATURAL. SO IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR A MINUTE, LET IT HAPPEN. LAUGH ABOUT IT AND BE LIKE, WELL, I'M A LITTLE NERVOUS.

>> I HAVE BEEN ON STAGE WITH THE MIKE IN MY HAND AND I SAID, Y'ALL, I'M NERVOUS. IT BREAKS THE NICE. PEOPLE GO, OOH, YEAH, ME TOO. THE FEELINGS THAT YOU ARE FEELING ARE NATURAL FEELINGS. DON’T SHUN THEM! EMBRACE THEM. KNOW THIS ABOUT LIFE. BECAUSE EVERYTHING YOU DO, ART IMITATES LIFE, RIGHT? SO IN LIFE YOU HAVE FEAR. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE BECAUSE YOU'RE IN FRONT OF A STAGE. BUT WHAT YOU NEED TO CHOOSE A SIDE RIGHT NOW, YOU KNOW, LIFE IS SPIRITUAL WARFARE. THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE NEGATIVE. THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE POSITIVE. THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE DAYLIGHT AND YOU HAVE NIGHT. THAT SUN IS CONSTANTLY CHASING THE MOON. YOU HAVE HATE, YOU HAVE LOVE. YOU HAVE GOOD, YOU HAVE BAD. SO AS HUMANS WE HAVE TO WAKE UP EVERY DAY. THIS IS AN EVERYDAY STRUGGLE FOR EVERY HUMAN, WHICH SIDE AM I ON TODAY? AM I GIVE IN TO FEAR OR STAY ON THE FAITH SIDE? WHAT I DO KNOW IS FEAR AND FAITH CANNOT EXIST. SO YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE YOUR SIDE. I'M NOT GOING TO SAY THAT FEAR AIN'T GOING TO CREEP IN. YOU JUST HAVE TO RECOGNIZE IT, EMBRACE IT, BREATHE IT OUT AND KEEP IT MOVING. SPEAK ON ITS. CALL IT OUT. HEY, I SEE YOU. I SEE YOU, FEAR.

>> I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE TALKING TO THE KIDS BUT MY HEART IS SO FULL RIGHT NOW. I'M LEARNING SO MUCH TO BE A BETTER ADULT, A BETTER PERSON. SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. I KNOW SEASON 5 OF "EMPIRE" IS COMING OUT WEDNESDAY. WE'RE ALL EXCITED TO SEE IT. I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT. BUT FIRST I THINK WE HAVE A TRAILER. SO LET'S CHECK THAT OUT FIRST.

>> EMPIRE SEASON 5. IT JUST FEELS DIFFERENT. LIKE SOMETHING HAS BEEN COMPLETELY SHAKEN UP.

>> WE ENDED LAST SEASON AND EVERYBODY WAS IN JEOPARDY.

>> EVERYBODY GOT SHOT. IT WAS LIKE, WHOA, WHAT'S HAPPENING.

>> WHO IS IN THE COFFIN? I WANT TO KNOW.

>> IT HAS TO BE ONE OF THE LYONS, RIGHT?

>> I DON'T KNOW. I SURE HOPE IT'S NOT ME.

>> I HOPE IT'S NOT ME.

>> "EMPIRE" SEASON 5 IS BACK. WE’RE FAST FORWARDING TWO YEARS LATER. THE LYONS HAVE LOST EVERYTHING.

>> THEY LOST EVERYTHING. LUCIOUS AND COOKIE ARE GREAT. THEY JUST DON'T HAVE NO MONEY.

>> COOKIE AND LUCIOUS' RELATIONSHIP HAS DEFINITELY BEEN TESTED TIME AND TIME AGAIN. YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER. THAT SEEMS TO BE THE GENERAL CONSENSUS FROM THE FANS FOREPERSON.

>> I'M SO SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE TAKING THINGS FROM US. LET'S TAKE BACK WHAT'S OURS.

>> SO WE LOOK FORWARD TO IT. WE CAN'T STAY.

>> IT'S TIME HE GETS WHAT HE DESERVES.

>> THE FAMILY. THE LEGACY HAS TO FIND A WAY TO SURVIVE. THIS WILL BE ABOUT THEM FINDING THE LIONS WITHIN THEIR OWN HEART.

>>WOMEN RISE.

>> LIKE ALWAYS.

>> THIS IS DEFINITELY LIONS AGAINST THE WORLD. BUT THE LYONS ARE FINALLY THE UNDERDOGS. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> CAN I JUST SAY THAT THAT PLAID SUIT, THAT'S YOU IS VIBRATING OVER HERE. THAT PLAID SUIT IS FROM SEASON 2. IT'S SEASON 5, AND I CAN STILL FIT IT! YES!! I JUST HAD TO SAY THAT. OKAY.

>> AS A VIEWER, THIS IS ALMOST LIKE GOING BACK TO THE BEGINNING. WE SAW WHERE THEY WERE YOUNG, SCRAPPY, HAVING TO BUILD THIS. THERE THEY ARE AGAIN. I'M JUST SO EXCITED. I KNOW YOU'RE NOT GOING TO TELL US WHAT HAPPENS, BUT CAN YOU GIVE US, WHAT IS THE VIBE OF THIS SEASON?

>> I THINK WHAT I LOVE, WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT IS THAT FOR FOUR SEASONS COOKIE WAS LIKE GIVE ME WHAT'S MINE. UH-OH ME THIS, UH-OH ME THAT. GIVE ME MINE. AND THIS FIFTH SEASON, LUCIOUS KNOWS HE NEEDS HER. NOW YOU GET TO SEE THE FAMILY, THE FAMILY AS A COLLECTIVE. THEY STAND EACH OTHER IN THE BACK, TRYING TO KILL EACH OTHER. NOW YOU SEE THE FAMILY COME TOGETHER COLLECTIVELY AND BUILD ANOTHER EMPIRE. THE MESSAGE I LOVE IS THE SAME THING THAT'S GOING ON WITH THE WHOLE KAEPERNICK CAMPAIGN. YOU HAVE TO BE BOLD ENOUGH AND FEARLESS ENOUGH TO WALK AWAY FROM IT ALL IF YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER. COOKIE KNEW. COOKIE KNEW THAT BUILDING IS JUST A SHELL OF A BUILDING WITHOUT THE LYONS IN THERE.

>> I LIKE THE PROPOSAL. YOU HAVE TO PUT ME FIRST. WE'RE DOING THIS TOGETHER THIS TIME. YOU CAN'T BE LEAVING ME IN THE DUST.

>> RIGHT.

>> THAT WAS AN IMPORTANT PART.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> I THINK IT'S A METAPHOR FOR HOW LIFE REALLY WORKS. YOU KNOW, OFTEN TIMES THERE IS THIS BIG BATTLE BETWEEN PEOPLE. AND IN A FAMILY, YOU KNOW, THERE'S -- EVERYBODY HAS A ROLE TO PLAY. AND WHEN THAT ROLE IS WELL PLAYED BY EVERYONE WITHIN THE FAMILY, THE FAMILY BENEFITS AND PROSPERS. BUT EVERYONE HAS TO COME TOGETHER AND STICK TOGETHER. IN ORDER TO DO THAT, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR YOUR MATE. DON'T BE OUT THERE JUST PICKING ANY PRETTY OR HAPPY PERSON OR SOMEBODY THAT LOOKS LIKE THEY GOT IT GOING ON. IF YOU PICK THE WRONG MATE, YOU CAN BE STUCK WITH THEM FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IN AN UNHAPPY SITUATION. WHEN YOU HAVE HARD TIMES, THEY BECOME MISERABLE TIMES. MAKE SURE YOU PICK THE RIGHT MATE. APPARENTLY LUCIOUS AND COOKIE PICKED THE RIGHT MATE IN EACH OTHER.

>> THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING LOVE THAT OUR FAMILY WILL WORK TOGETHER AND WILL OVERCOME. BULL WITHOUT THAT LOVE, YOU WILL FALL APART. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT THE PERSON YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT BEING WITH IN THE FUTURE WHEN YOU GET READY TO GET MARRIED, TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLORE THAT AND DON'T MARRY THE WRONG PERSON. I'M SORRY IF THAT SEEMS OFF. BUT I FELT LIKE I NEEDED TO SAY IT. BUT THAT'S WHAT THIS YEAR PROVES ON "EMPIRE," THAT WE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE IN FINDING EACH OTHER.

>> IT'S ALSO NICE TO JUST TAKE THE MATERIAL THINGS AWAY FROM THE LIONS AND SEE THAT'S NOT REALLY WHAT BOUND THEM TOGETHER. WHAT BOUND THEM TOGETHER WAS THEIR LOVE, KINSHIP AND THEIR FAMILY. AND THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE REALLY RELYING ON THIS SEASON.

>> COOKIE WAS A LITTLE SALTY SHE HAD TO GIVE UP THE FURS.

>> THAT WAS A SAD DAY.

>> I WANT TO MAKE SURE VIEWERS KNOW THEY CAN ALSO GET INVOLVED INVOLVED IN SOME PHILANTHROPY BY WATCHING "EMPIRE." YOU HAVE A CAMPAIGN GOING ON CALLED EMPIRE STAR GIVES BACK. FOR EVERYONE TWEETS $2, UP TO $50,000 WILL GO TO TURN TURNAROUND ARTS TO FUND SOME OF THEIR PROGRAMS

>> THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

>> WATCH, GET INVOLVED IS. I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR GETTING INVOLVED. ARTS EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT AND IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE TO SPEAK ABOUT IT. SO THANK YOU ALL.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU.
